This is interesting as I'm sure a lot of our kids are exposed especially during dental visits. I read the article but am not exactly sure how to take the results as it relates to the b-12and folic acid in our children. Does this mean we should supplement more before surgeries or dental visits? If anyone who is better versed in medical lingo can explain in basic terms, it might be helpful. Thanks

I think taking more would not make a difference.

Correct me if I am wrong, phillypa, but I think the N2O renders the B12 useless, increasing homocysteine-not something you want.

I guess , as I read it, is how potentially dangerous us this in an acute setting, short term siutation? how long does this effect last?

thanks for posting this!

We met with the Genetics team today at Mass General Boston. I had heard that a lot of PANDAS kids were testing positive for the MTHFR gene mutations. Sure enough my kiddo is positive too. They told us to stay away from

Nitrous Oxide.

I believe the best course of action is that whenever your child is having any kind of surgery to always ask for no nitrous oxide. Why take an unnecessary risk? There are plenty of other drugs that they can use.

Interesting. My ds had a very bad reaction after having his tonsils out.. they said it was due to the anesthesia. It was not a pandas flare he had... and it lasted a full week but the ped had told me it could have lasted much longer... but the ENT acted like he had never seen this type of reaction to it before. My daughter (not pandas) had no reaction to it.

Ironically, I was reading this post on Friday during my daughter's check-up at the dentist. The receptionist was talking on the phone loudly about how the child had to receive Nitrous Oxide (assuming for a cavity). It sent chills up my spine. Fortuantely, no cavities on my end.

on another note- my daughter who used to react to dental cleanings, no longer does. Two in a row now with no reaction. Yay.
