DId you guys see this? Dr. Conversion Disorder disputes Dr. T.'s PANS diagnosis. Dr. Conversion Disorder has many interesting theories!

http://thebatavian.com/

The quotes made in this article are incredible--Everyone on this forum should read this--

This type of nay-saying is keeping children sick and suffering across this country...

How dare this man (who claims to diagnose conversion disorders weekly in his neurology practice(?) impute motives for these girls?

He suggests that they will now get better from a placebo-effect of treatment?1 You have got to be kidding me...

I guess if you think the illness is all in a child's head than you think the "cure" will be too--just too bad he didn't help earlier with some type of "placebo"(!) If it was that simple why didn't he "fix" it earlier?

I would stop speaking to the press -- if it was me, unless the publicity was now the draw.

It looks like we may have been "had" -- !!!

the publisher/author of the Batavian website is named Howard Owens, and it appears, the comments re: DR. SWEDO, including who she has seen and what she has said (!), were publicly (?) disputed as the Batavian was supposedly told she did not say any of this--

I wonder if we will soon see a dispute of what Mechtler is said to have said as well?...check the facts please!

here is the link.

This is just getting bad:

"Another conversion disorder patient reported in Le Roy"

Is it possible that the author of these articles, Howard Owens, is just making this up? Is Dr. Mechtler really on this guy's speed dial?

"Mechtler recommended that any parents who are concerned their children could be susceptible to conversion disorder, "take away the social media and segregate them from friends who may be afflicted."

Maybe we should also burn their books... Or see if they float....

I thought stress caused conversion disorder.... So if you take away social media from a teen....

Did you read where they said that PANDAS is now due to "vaccine injury?" This is just unbelievable.

But, yeah for Dr. Swedo doing on record as basically saying that Dr. Conversion Disorder is a rotten stinking lier! He doesn't care about anyone but himself, and I think he's finally being outed!

I'll wait and see how the Swedo thing plays out.

But, I wonder how he can claim that the girls still under his care are getting better, but the media attention is making them worse? It can't be both. So are they getting better or worse? Also, how does he know if the patients he is not treating (or, presumably, not examining) are getting worse, since he is not able to evaluate and track progress?

Maybe the girls that are getting better (if that is the case) are getting better b/c of SPONTANEOUS remission. Maybe they have SC, not PANDAS.

And anyone notice that NOBODY is talking about SC??? How was that ruled out?

I agree it could be SC give the hemiballistic movements, but Dr. T reports that not everyone had elevated ASO or DNASE B - some had mycoplasma. (at least that is how I interpreted his statements). Can you get SC with other infections?

my son has had PANDAS for most of his life. There was a period of about 4 years when he was off antibiotics except for a once or twice a year sinus infection. However, he still had PANDAS symptoms with allergies, respiratory infections, and viruses. All of these subsided spontaneously shortly after the infection ended. Once, he had very bad OCD after a respiratory infection - coupled with urinary frequency, separation anxiety, and some mild tics. All of these subsided after about 3 months. At the time we did not know it was PANDAS. So... I am not sure that this is not PANDAS if it spontaneously subsides. Unfortunately, the only way to know is with the next infection.

My theory is that EVERYONE actually had strep (and possibly mycoplasma) but only SOME of the girls tested positive ie had elevated titers (or cultures if those were done). Others either were tested too late, or they were ones who don't get elevated ASO's. But, since Dr. T. is a scientist, he won't say everyone had strep without some laboratory evidence.

Remember that Sydenham's Chorea (and PANDAS as well, I suppose?) are post-infectious autoimmune diseases. A CURRENT infection isn't needed for a child to have tic/ocd symptoms. The infection is the TRIGGER, but need not be present at a later date to cause the tic/ocd symptoms, the auto-immunity is enough. With SC, the motor symptoms can present 6 mo. AFTER the strep infection, by which time the ASO/cultures could be totally negative (just as PANDAS kids can have PANDAS without "evidence" of strep, they are just harder to diagnose.)

From what I can figure out, SC requires 1 major and 2 minor criteria, or 2 major criteria. I believe (?) the dystonia/chorea/tics these girls have could count as 1 major criteria. Some of the other criteria you wouldn't know unless you ran the correct lab tests. http://www.wemove.org/syd/syd_dia.html

But, I also agree that PANDAS could spontaneously subside...especially the low grade cases (I think that happened to us as well, early on). Or it might subside if the child is put on antibiotics for some other reason!

Hm - it seems as if Mechtler did consult Dr. Swedo ? :

-

If that is in fact correct, I find it highly problematic, given that NIMH just yesterday stated, that Swedo hadn´t seen or examined the Le Roy kids and because of that wasn´t able to make a statement about them or their diagnosis -
