Familyof5 Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 Hi all! My FIL was just diagnosed with Babesia. Seemed odd to me because he was diagnosed in the emergency room. Anyway, he had lyme disease a few years ago, took antibiotics and never seemed to have another recurrance...until now. Can anyone recommend a lyme literate doctor that he should see and/or suggest what type of treatment he will need? Hi lives on the South Shore in Massachusetts. Thanks in advance!!!!
philamom Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 I don't have any experience with Babesia treatment, but I think Mepron (anti-malaria drug) is usually used, combined with antibiotics. I'm sure others will chime in.
tpotter Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 When they diagnosed him, didn't they recommend treatment? Also, how did they diagnose it so easily in the ER? That is odd, and also kind of impressive. Hi all! My FIL was just diagnosed with Babesia. Seemed odd to me because he was diagnosed in the emergency room. Familyof5 Posted June 29, 2011 Author Report Posted June 29, 2011 I thought it very odd myself--and was questioning him on how they diagnosed "lyme disease" in the ER. Finally I said, "did they tell you that you had Babesia?" and he said, "yes, that is the term they used". My FIL is single, and the kind of person who doesn't ask any questions. He says they gave him 4 medicines and told him that he needed to see his doctor as soon as possible. I know he is unaware of how serious this can be, so I wanted to send him some information from all of you experienced people so that he can at least have some data to research before he visits a doctor. I'd love to send him to a lyme literate doctor so that he doesn't have to do any research (not the type of person who will).
NancyD Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 That is my understanding too -- Mepron. I am borderline for Babesia and if the PCR test comes back positive my doctor will add Mepron. I don't know any LLMDs on the South Shore but Kara sees an LLMD in Newton, which is close by. You may want to PM her. Our doctor is 4 hours away in upstate NY so that won't help. Which ER diagnosed Babesia? Very impressive!
MichaelTampa Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 I hear that while Malarone or Mepron can be very helpful for babesia, people rarely treat it successfully without also adding in the herb artimisinin. Some recommend artimisinin only 5 days a week and taking a full week off every month as the body can start to reject the artimisinin.
sf_mom Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 (edited) I take Artimisinin 4 days a week for Babesia diagnoses. I have the weekends off.....!!!! Edited June 30, 2011 by SF Mom
ptcgirl Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 My dd has Babesia Duncani. Treatment depends on which type of Babesia he has (from what our LLMD said). My dd is on Enula for it. She also has Lyme and Bartonella that she takes antibiotics for.
KaraM Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Did you get my email a couple of weeks ago? I can't remember!! (Losing it). If yes, Were you able to get in touch with any of those docs?
danddd Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 if he is on the south shore, dr. sam donta is a lyme doc in falmouth. i think he is good.
Familyof5 Posted July 12, 2011 Author Report Posted July 12, 2011 Hi Kara, yes, I did, I responded but wasn't sure I quite figured out how. I did forward them to him. He has done nothing yet. Today he said he is still feeling really bad. I reminded him about the email of doctors...I think now he will look into them. Thanks danddd...I'll forward that name also if it wasn't on Kara's list. I appreciate it.
cobbiemommy Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 Bactrim and Tindamax is what was prescribed for my son for Babesia. Previously, he had taken Mepron and Artmeminisin along with Zithromax. Tell FIL to expect massive herx. Cobbie
