GraceUnderPressure Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Here in TX we finally had a good, soaking rain after serious drought - the mold spore counts went from very light to mega heavy the next day. My ds19 & I were pretty messed up. I guess it's safe to say now that mold is definitely an issue for us. So I am wondering if those of you who have been working to reduce mold in the home can tell me the recommended approach for tackling this? (ie. having the air ducts cleaned should probably wait till the bathroom & kitchen mold has been taken care of, right?)

My ds19 & I were pretty messed up. I guess it's safe to say now that mold is definitely an issue for us. So I am wondering if those of you who have been working to reduce mold in the home can tell me the recommended approach for tackling this? (ie. having the air ducts cleaned should probably wait till the bathroom & kitchen mold has been taken care of, right?) We have no expertise in this, but have read Dr. Shoemaker's book and hope to get Dr. Schaller's book (wonder if anyone has read this), and would say to hang plastic with masking tape, maybe twice with 2 entries, in the area of mold before removing [throwing out window of room is ideal]. Also, would clean the air ducts first and make sure the intake is not drawing in the mold or put a HEPA filter in it while doing mold remediation. We also caulked the spaces between wall and floor when we had new carpeting put in and hope to close any open spaces to indoor walls in case there is mold in there as well. If you remove mold from a room, it is wise to vacuum-wash-vacuum room before opening it up while wearing a N95 air mask. This may prevent cross-contamination in the entire house. We may have not done this correctly in the past, so are having to vacuum-wash-vacuum every room and everything in it in the entire house now! I would presume that if you have a filter, to clean it weekly while this is being done, with a HEPA vacuum. If you look at my threads, you can also see, health-wise, what is working for us. My son just got his first holding-steady-improving diagnosis today, which we are very excited about. Best choice we have made is to get rid of the mold to enhance the health of everyone in our house! Best wishes! It can be a huge job but well worth it if your family is healthy!
JuliaFaith Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 FYI - Just found mold in the toilet tank on the underside of the lid!
GraceUnderPressure Posted June 28, 2011 Author Report Posted June 28, 2011 This is miserable! This is the worst my allergies have ever been! Is there anything I can do to relieve the symptoms? Or should I assume that it's more than allergies? Should I treat this like biotoxin poisoning? The symptoms are not constant as I would expect if it were from the molds in the house (& probably the dust that I am stirring up as I clean, too) or if I had biotoxins in my system. In fact, it seems to be the day after the city's pollen reports show an increase in molds that I am getting it so bad (headache, stomach pain, eczema flare up, feel like I can't breathe as deeply as I need to, can't think as clearly & very forgetful). So I am thinking that this stuff in the house has hyped my immune system so that it is really struggling when a larger load hits. Can't get cholestyramine, but would bentonite clay or charcoal caps (which I do have in the house) help relieve things if it is caused by allergy rather than biotoxins? (sorry if this is a stupid question, but my thinking is definitely fuzzy!)
JuliaFaith Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 (edited) My son is taking salmon oil and chlorella (in place of the chloresta...)for detoxing and inflammation for mold. It seems like some detoxing would be helpful. He is taking 9 salmon gels/day and 60 chlorella a day just to give you an idea about detoxing. An air cleaner (local warehouse store), if you can get one, would be good too. We are also using this propolis nebulizer which removes 70-80% of molds, bacteria, & viruses out of the air. It is about $200 and uses propolis which bees use in their hives to keep them healthy. One is in his bedroom and another is in the other room he spends a lot of time in. These things along with treating his MaRCONS with BEG spray, and using the VIP spray (both recommended by Dr. S,) are actually helping improve his health situation for the first time in over a year! Hope this helps! Julia Edited June 29, 2011 by JuliaFaith
justinekno Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 Julia - Where did you buy the nebulizer? Also, which brand are you using for salmon oil? We just started using BioPure which is 1000 mg per capsule. They are huge! Not sure if I could get my son to take more than one! LNN Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 So I am thinking that this stuff in the house has hyped my immune system so that it is really struggling when a larger load hits. (sorry if this is a stupid question, but my thinking is definitely fuzzy!) My "allergies" have been killing me this past week - but only my eyes. They itch like crazy, but I'm not stuffy (do have a cough tho). We've had tons of rain in New England - tons of snow and then tons of rain - I don't think we've had more than 3-4 days on a row without rain. So the mold count in our area is very high. I've been taking quercetin as an antihistamine and it helps a lot. If it's biotoxin, then a binder should help. Chlorella seems to be preferred in the lyme community - not sure why charcoal is never mentioned. My understanding is they do roughly the same thing (anyone know why charcoal isn't suggested by the doctors?). I don't think binders help with true allergies. Allergies cause histamines to spike. So I'm not sure.
MichaelTampa Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 I don't know why charcoal isn't mentioned much in the lyme community. I had already run into cholestyramine and chlorella before I heard about it. Still, I tried to get some to see if it would be good for me, couldn't find a vegan one so gave up on it. But one difference between charcoal and chlorella--chlorella is nutritional, it is a food, it will give protein and vitamins and other goodies--charcoal is just going to soak things up and take them away.

Justine Nebulizer/vaporizer was thru Bee Healthy Farms at www.beehealthyfarms.com We are using the BioPure salmon oil but tried another top-of-the-line brand that did not test well. Dr. recommended and I just ordered some from another company located in Bellingham, WA, called Vital Choice. They were 1/2 the price not including $5/shipping per bottle (not sure if the dosage is the same). You may be able to punture the capsule and add it to your son's food. My son is 13 so not sure what your son's dosage would be.
