My child tested possitive for clostridia on the ONE TEST from Genova. We were then told to do a follow up MICROBIAL ORGANICS ACID TEST, to follow up and see if clostridia came back after treating with Vancomycen. Not sure how to read the test, and was wondering if anyone is good at this. I am going 2 schedule a phone consult with Scott Smith on Monday... but I hate waiting for answers. Can I post the results?

Wanda,

On page 1 of the OAT results, about 1/2 way down, is a section marked:

Malabsorptional and Bacterial Markers

HPHPA

Is the clostridia marker.

On the left, it will give your score. If there is a bolded 'H' it is high. To the right of that, is the normal ranges.

HTH.

Also, not all docs interpret it this way, but if DHPHPA (beneficial bacteria) is elevated, that can also indicate clostridia, even when HPHPA is not elevated.

Once when my son's DHPHPA was elevated, we gave flagyl and the clostridia symptoms did go away.

Can anyone tell me what a elevated Phenyllactic may mean on this test? My dd's was 0.53 and the ref range is < .0.27. It mentions "it may indicate increased intake dietary phenylalanine, or heterozygous or homozygous for the genetic disease (PKU)". I never heard back from the doctor, so I assume it is fine.

I'm sorry I don't know. Maybe try googling...

Ok...I don't like what I googled. My daughter doesn't eat sugar free foods or drink soda, so not sure how she would have an elevated reading. It seems pretty high. And PKU seems like something that would be diagnosed at birth. I'll have to contact the doctor who ordered the OAT test (at my request) since he never got back to me about the results. I assumed it was fine...I'm sure it probably is.

Also, you can call Great Plains Lab. and ask for customer service- I've called before, and in fact, they used to (pretty sure still do) set up an appt. for a free consult with each test. But they have people in customer service that know the tests.

Thanks...I'll try them on Monday.
