Stephanie2 Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 (edited) My 3yo has been on azith for 5 days, and when that did not clear the strep, he was then put on augmentin for 2 weeks. During the augmentin course, he developed (what I believe to be) a clostridia infection, diarrhea, reduced appetite (only wanting to consume carbs). He also developed a strong smell on his body that wouldn't even go away even after bathing. I assumed ammonia was elevated and I started some alphaketoglutaric acid and the smell went away. Yesterday was his last day of augmentin and today in his BM I discovered long strings of blood covered mucous (oh, I hope no one is eating while reading this!). It was still very soft, so I don't see why it would be blood from straining. Has anyone seen this? Could this be due to damage in his GI tract? Also, anyone know what I should do? I flushed the BM b/c I didn't see any point in having it tested for blood, it CLEARLY had red blood in/on it. I was thinking about collecting his next stool and taking it to the ped and maybe also sending some stool in to Genova for a microbiology analysis. Any other ideas? Oh, and by the way, I have a feeling that the augmentin did not clear the strep. I will have a culture done tomorrow. I don't see how I can give another abx with blood in stool, though. Always something! Edited April 4, 2011 by Stephanie2
amyjoy Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Hi STEPHANIE Does he seem to have any GI pain? It sure does sound like some kind of gastritis or intestinal ulceration, and maybe instead of just doing a microbial test you can do something that is more expansive and includes overall chemical health of the intestinal tract. Examples are the Metametrix 2100 panel or DiagnosTechs GI Health Panel. both of these look at growth but also, enzymes, inflammation, immunomarkers, stuff like that, to help sort it out. Maybe in the meantime use some Aloe vera whole leaf juice, a tbs or 2 before/between meals to help heal the gut tissue and maybe chew DGL? These won't solve the problem necessarily but while waiting for the test results they can coat, soothe and support the mucilagenous membranes. I hope that offers some ideas for you? blessings amy
Stephanie2 Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 I have had several comprehensive stool analyses done. One of them showed elevated Eosinophil X Protein. I did not further investigate, just went on with the DAN protocol to decrease overall inflammation. He definitely has tummy issues, has since the age of 4 months. I will try the aloe, good idea. What is DGL? Some kind of digestive enzyme? I probably need to drop an email to the DAN doc about this.
MichaelTampa Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 DGL is deglycerized licorice, spelled something like that, very good for healing gut tissue. I've been taking the xymogen product GlutAloeMine for a very long time for this, has L-Glutamine, Aloe, DGL, and arabinogalactin (a prebiotic). All of these things can help. Watch the L-Glutamine, it is an excitatory which means could cause wild dreams if taken at bedtime (I've experienced this), and even seizures in some with predisoposition to that, such as those with lyme.

Stephanie2 Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 It hit me today that a week ago I made the following changes with his supplements: increased fish oil, and started high doses of Vit E and Vit D. I believe all of these have blood-thinning potential, and with his predisposition to belly issues, plus the augmentin... Guess I have discontinue all of this for a week or so. Follow up to make sure the blood is gone, etc...
amyjoy Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Do you need a doctor's script to run these tests? Thx HI Well, i think you have to get the kits from an MD but you can call the labs and find out. AND if so, and if your MD doesn't feel good about using them, i'll find a way to get one to you. amy
amyjoy Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Of course it makes sense that all the abx can wreck this kind of havoc in the intestines, and yes i guess there is a chance of an increase in bleeding potential with the supplements. Probably good tho to work on rejuvenating that lining in whatever way you're comfortable, mucilagenous herbs, foods, aloe etc can help, slippery elm, stuff like that. good luck with it. amy
