Nasonex

I have been told to give DD nasonex. Of course I looked up the side effects and am afraid to give. Anyway, how does this steroid relate to the tics. Has anyone used this and seen bad side effects and how did it affect tics?

Hi Mar,

Hopefully our local expert will see your post and provide you with some more detailed information. But I can channel one post in which she (Chemar) states that "steroids increase dopamine which in turn increases tics in TS." The case might be different if tics aren't caused by TS...

I will second that. First hand experience here. When my dd7 took it her tics exploded. I didn't really know what I was dealing with at the time (4 yrs ago) so I continued to give it to her on and off for about a year and a half. I am sure it made her autoimmune problem worse. Since then, I found my way to an environmental doctor who has told me never to use steroids. He says it is like throwing gasoline on a fire. You may not have the same problem, but if you do try it out and start seeing things you don't like, take your child off it to see if their tics calm down.

As an aside....My two older children both HAD chronic inflammation of their nasal passages from what the doctors continued to call "allergies" for years. We have cured the chronic inflammation of their nasal passages by removing the source of the inflammation from their environment: mold. I'm a big believer that mold toxins are causing more of our children's problems than many people truly know (much like lyme disease).

I would stay away from using any form of steriod. Even using albuterol can aggravate tics.

To control allergy, if it is food, do not eat it. If it is airborne, use a HEPA air filter in the room. Try quercetin, it has worked wonders for my kids' nasal allergies. Also, use neti pot to irrigate the nasal passage.

My son has been treated w/NAET for the past 5 years and he has a higher threshold for allergens. Things he couldn't eat, now he can have it in moderation w/o tics. His environmental allergy has also improved.

Also, increase antioxidant via diet, more fresh fruits & vegetables is very helpful to reduce inflammation.
