It is just a miracle with what I am seeing with my child. The azith. is really helping my VERY VERY sick girl. Daytime is looking good, but the agitation at night is still tough. She is on 250mg. of azith.... 25mg. of seroques... and 3mg. melatonin. The pdoc is going to add in lamictal for the spikes on her EEG, but in the past this has not helped much with the agitation. Do you think something like OLE would be helpful to add in? Or should I just keep up the azith. and wait awhle? She has been on it for about 14 days. Need advice.

Have you heard about or tried L-theanine? It's supposed to be very safe and okay to use with other meds (always a concern, esp. if your dd is on seroquel). http://web-us.com/l-theanine_anxiety_reducer.htm

The reviews on amazon are interesting. I've tried it recently (just a low dose of 100-200mg) and have noticed a difference....kind of a calm happy feeling. It seems (from looking at the amazon reviews) that higher doses might give you even more of an effect.

It is recommended to give on an empty stomach if possible (or possibly with juice). I believe you don't want to give it with protein since that might reduce absorbtion. Maybe give at bedtime, 3 hours after dinner.

I would also rec. trying an advil (or two), perhaps with dinner.

Keep up the Azith.

We used to call it zithromagic! So glad you're seeing such good results! You might try some valerian root at night for calming. Ibuprofen helps my daughter settle down at night, too.

Our experience w/ lamictal is that it interferes with sleep, so if/when you get to that point, you may want to do AM dosing.

We added 5htp (100 mg) to the melatonin recently and it does help to calm things down a bit - plus it is supposed to keep things calmer the next day. It also is supposed to have a bit of an appetite suppressant, so you want to be aware of that if you are dealing with food restriction.

If you do use 5-htp I would start low (50mg/day) for several days.

Also, don't start multiple new supplements at once. For example, do advil for a few days, then add on L-theanine at a low dose, then maybe a higher dose, or val. root one at a time. If you change more than one thing at a time you won't know what individual effect each med is having. Also, if you have a bad reaction, you won't know what is causing it.

EA Mom - I am wondering about your suggestion for a lower dose of 5HTP. Is it just to see what the effects are, or is there something I should be concerned about / looking for since we are using 100mg. My son is adult-sized, so that may make a difference. Sorry- I don't mean to hijack this thread... just looking to grab some of your wisdom if I can!

The bottle I have (Nature's Way 5-htp 50mg each) says:

Start with a low dose of one tablet (50mg)taken daily with a meal. Increase the dose slowly (every 3-5 days) up to a maximum of 4 tablets (200mg) taken daily.

I've seen this "start low" recommendation elsewhere as well.

I think this is just being cautious since certain individuals may have idiosyncratic reactions or might be really sensitive to its effects, or have gi problems from the med and there is the potential for serotonin syndrome developing with too much 5-htp (esp. if certain other psych. drugs are used concurently).

But if your ds (esp. if he is adult size and not on other psych. meds) is tolerating 100mg/day well (and that is what you started with) I wouldn't worry!

I take 200mg 5htp, twice a day per doctor advice. I did start low and go up, no problems here. Unfortunately, I am quite dependent on this dose, if I lower it I go downhill...

The dr. told me to give my son 25mg of 5htp... when I told him I couldn't find that dose in the store he told me to go the 50, that I would end up there anyway... but my son was 6 at the time and small.... I noticed a difference several days into it with just one 50mg at bedtime although we don't use it anymore.
