I haven't dealt with vocal tics besides one rare bark in literally three years. Then earlier this week I went to the dentist for the ranula that popped up on Sunday, & she told me to suck on candy for a week to see if that would make it go away. First off... Candy? Really? I've already had to have it surgically removed once & you think some lemon heads are gonna do the trick? & of course now my Mom & stepdad are saying "Well, let's give it some more time to see if the candy is working" even though the ranula has double in size & it's been the recommended 3-4 days. -_____- Secondly.... Candy is the mecca for anything artificial! Sugars, dyes, all that. I think I'm the only kid who would ever be this opposed to being told to eat candy for a week, haha. It's made me straightup sick. Righteous headaches & stomachaches, crying in class, unable to move, the whole nine yards. & then on Wednesday in my English class, I stuttered. It's not a normal stutter, it's a tic. I don't know how to explain this but just trust me. Then the barks started coming more often, & then I had a screaming tic Wednesday. No more screaming tics, thank God, but the barks & stutters are rampant & this has all been gone for three years!!! Someone please gimme some advice besides putting a stop to all the candy!

sorry I really don't have advice, but this is interesting to me because I noticed dd vocal tic last night and I haven't heard it for several weeks, Halloween candy is probably the culprit. So hard, trying to keep her in balance, I don't want her eating the candy, but I don't want to completely deprive her of that childhood joy either, she has already had to miss out childhood in so many ways because of PANDAS- Well, like my gut told me yesterday, gotta sneak the rest of the Halloween candy into the trash!!! She's gonna be pissed:(

another thought, are you currently on abx? I am reading "The yeast connection" only few pages in, but it is already raising some suspicions for me about yeast contributions to PANDAS symptoms. I know dd has had issues with yeast, and I truly feel it is contributing to some PANDAS behaviors, sugars would surely exacerbate symptoms if yeast was contributing.. Overgrowth shows up in many forms. Maybe worth a looksie.

So on Priscilla's note, try that test someone mentioned a few weeks ago to check for yeast. First thing in the morning when you wake up, take a glass of water and spit into it. See if, after a while, your saliva dissipates or forms long strings and gunk at the bottom. I have no idea if it's fool proof and I'm pretty sure there are some more scientific tests for yeast (the M OATs screen???), but at least you can try it tomorrow....

So sorry you're dealing with this on top of everything else...:(

this kinda explaines it...and puts a little twist i never thought of....

maybe some are more sensitive to the yeast itself, as in allergic...so a little or alot doesn't matter if you react to it...where if someone isn't "allergic" it doesn't effect them....

the only thing i can say in support of this test is...iv'e been doing it for years with our family....

and it is always the SAME...but i feel the condition hasn't changed for any of us yet....

DH...disgusting, leggy, cloudy....

me...normal...(i keep telling you guys i'm normal :D )

ds...a little cloudy, a little leggy

ds7(non-p) normal....

ds3 haven't checked yet....next go round...i think he'll enjoy it

we've done this test at least once a year or more over the course of yearsish....

i do think my dh an ds have a problem with this as they are the ones who have been on abx more times than to count

dh is middle ageish...x 3x a year...is alot of abx

Not sure about yeast, but I have pinpointed that dyes & sugar don't bode well with me. Never had a doctor order me to eat candy before, but I hate it!!! My aunt had Candida, my Mom has Ulcerative Colitis, & my Dad has Acid Reflux like no other, so I have no idea where the GI issues come from yet. & I'm glutenfree veg, so would I be consuming much yeast anyway? I know you can still have a problem without eating a lot of it, but I just thought it was mostly in bread.

No antibiotics, either. I wish. :( Could only be so lucky. Hopefully soon! I've heard about the yeast complications though. Galbladder ones too. Galbladder problems ALSO run in my family, so I don't imagine I'll do too well in that respect but I don't really care, hah.

& I will do that test as soon as I wake up! <3

How bad is it? Could it be infected? If your mom is willing, have her call the dentist tomorrow and say that it hurts. Can she prescribe an antibiotic in case there's an infection until she can see you next week.

one more thing...as i've been pondering,researching....probiotics are really becoming mainstream...and i recently posted a couple of things about gut flora and fighting seasonal flu and allergies....

so it wouldn't hurt to start probiotics now...get a running start....

if you think you have yeast, some are considered better than others..

if you have clostridia, sach, bifidum

or maybe just start with a broad spectrum....

or just grab some cultruelle and take that at night....

i started all of us on probis...not just the pan/pit people in my house....

Emerson, as you are young ..... a question for you...do you wear "silly bands"?

Some parents on the TS board are documenting that they notice a possible reactivity to them.....possibly transdermal dyes and chemicals?

If anyone wants you to have candy again, maybe try the healthier kinds at http://www.naturalcandystore.com :)

I do wear silly bands but I never ever take them off & can't really recall having seen any symptom worsening with them. All of the ones I have are from my brother or the special needs kids I work with. I use them as a little reward system. Have a good day, get a silly band. It works pretty well. :D

FixIt ~ Are there any do's & dont's with probiotics? I'll look into them! :)

Vickie ~ I've never heard of ranulas getting infected, but I know mine doesn't hurt. Although, if it meant antibiotics I suppose it might sting just a little. ;) It's now tripled in size. It's not bumping my tongue yet but I'm sure not sucking on more candy. Mom is supposed to call about it tomorrow.

FceFxer ~ I tried Tenex in the beginning. I was on quite the cocktail so I can't really say one way or the other if it did anything for me. No IVIG over here. I wish. :( No treatment at all yet, but we are waiting on one more set of blood tests & then we're off for antibiotics!!! It might not be IVIG, but it's better than nothing. :) :)

Hi Emerson, if you never take them off, how can you know that you would not see a positiive response without them on?

I am not suggesting they are in any way a primary cause of tics...obviously not by any stretch! Just that you *might* notice an improvement without them on.

basicly start with culturell for instance(about 10 billion units)..i would at night before bed so it has time to work...

after 3-4 days try 2....then maybe go up to 4...over time....

some people do trillions...we haven't gotten there yet...and my ds is 78 lbs

some do it 2x a day..but it is hard for us to all that scheduled in day....

i would suggest to start...also stay away from anything with a strep strain in it...some do ok some don't...but start off w/o and maybe try those later..ie stay away from most yogurts and read labels on probiotics...
