another connection made today- an AHA moment
thereishope replied to lboll's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
It seems more people see that their PANDAS child had PANDAS tendencies quite earlier than they realize or that another sibling had PANDAS tendencies, in hindsight. Does she continue to have the cheating fear or does that come and go? Here's alist of OCD tendencies that parents on this forum have witnessed. It may be worth reading them and see if anything else is currently going on. http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...ic=6153&hl= What treatment have you've pursued so far for your son for PANDAS? If you have a doctor that is willing to work with you right now, bring your daughter in too. If she could be evaulated and eventually dx with PANDAS, she may be put on a prohylactic antibiotic to try to prevent another strep infection. Just because she recovered rather smoohtly the last few times, unfortunately, it does not mean it will be the case every time. Does she get symtpoms of strep? -
You could request to have a titer test done to see if they are still protected against chicken pox. if they are, they get a medical exemption.

The Pen dosage sounds like a prophylactic dosage. If he has an infection that wouldn't help. How's the weather by you? Can you get to urgent care, tell them he has a hx of rheumatic fever (info you supplied from the other thread), he is only on a proph dose of Pen and you suspect he has strep. If he is on abx, a strep test can come back false negative. Hopefully, the urgent care people will put him on something stronger. If he has an infection, every day makes a difference with abx.

Good luck. Safe travels. Let us know how it goes.

fyi...If you want your son to see a new ped, he can do so even w/o vaccine records being transferred yet. They only need the vaccine records when it's time to give more shots. So, in theory, you can call on Monday and get him in with a different doctor maybe same day. When I finally left my ped I called around to local ped offices and just asked questions. They surprisingly answered them over the phone. Like a pre-screening. Why not pre-screen a ped?

Okay, saying nice things about your son (even with rages occurring) is NOT idiotic. You know in your heart the rages are not by his choice. I know the Dr Jeckyl/Mr Hyde scenario all too well. As for meds, I'm looking at that Pencillan that you typed and I'm thinking he may need something else. How long has he been on that? Is it a prophylactic dose? The I look at the abilify. I only know of one other child that has been on that. Hm. maybe start a thread about that and see if anyone has had good/bad experiences with it.
-
Um....you need a new pediatrician.
-
I am so sorry! Those rages are awful. I had a hard time restraining a 5 year old weighing 40 pounds. I can't even imagine an 80 pounder. Like you, we hid the knives after threats of jumping out the windows or threats of throwing himself down the stairs. he'd try his best to unlock those windows, but he was 5 and didn't know how. I don't think he ever went catatonic in the midst of it. He had moments of "not being there", but I don't think it happened in the middle of a rage. Those rages haven't happened in about a year. In a sense, I am blessed I don't remember all details. Whose care is he under? Is it a local doctor or have you seen a specialist? Remind us what meds he is on.

I went to the website. It looks like Iowa accepts a religious exemption. It states . I believe someone said that the way they produce the chicken pox vaccine can be seen as against many religious beliefs. Does ayone know anything about that? I am lucky that I haven't had to make any vaccine decisons about my kids yet since PANDAS surfaced. I don't know what to do myself. I know I don't want the chicken pox vaccine esp since he had a reaction to the first one. I definitely need to research this more. I don't know what to do about the rest. I don't even know what else my kids will need. I don't think a second chicken pox is required in Ohio yet, but the ped has already offered him as second one. Gggrr is right!
-
Some states you can take a religious exemption. Some states you can take a philosophical exemption. You can view your state's laws here... http://www.nvic.org/vaccine-laws.aspx Is a second chicken pox required in your state?

Couple questions... In the steroid burst section, you put an antibiotic question. Also, in that same section, do you think there is a need for some type of clause about how some doctors (ie Latimer) do prescribe a longer steroid burst with a tapering down? Just so someone who doesn't read the forum much thinks the month long steroid is wrong? When you talk about doing a follow up strep test, you say to do it 3 weeks after finishing treatment. I thought it was 2 weeks. Is it 2 or 3 after finishing abx?

They say they don't have only tetanus? Adults get tetanus by itself. I think you're suppose to get it every 7 years.
-
If he's been tic free for 3 months and they are back again, I would contact Dr L and, if it was me, I would also take him for a strep test just to rule it out. I'm paranoid about strep as I'm sure everyone else here is. You said no signs of a virus, allergies, possible sinus infection?

Questions about antibiotics, supplements, diet
thereishope replied to simplygina's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Hopefully someone can answer this. A mom once told me that if you give your child Vitamin D3 supplements, you're suppose to have a blood test done every so often to make sure levels are correct? That you can actually give too much D3. Anyone know if that's true? -

Here's an old thread about chlorine and tics along with some suggestions. I think you can rub magnesium on prior to swimming? http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...mp;hl=magnesium

I believe those who have had a + strep while on the abx changed the abx or upped the script of what they were on.You could probably get a doctor to change it if that is what you want, like to Zithromax. Maybe someone who has experienced that can chime in. How long have the tics been on the rise after seeing improvement?
-
So, he's on Augmentin right now and has been on that since October? Have you ruled out if anything else can be causing tics to worsen? Such as viruses, allergies, stress, family members being ill. Have you been swimming lately in a pool with chlorine at a hotel? If he continues to worsen, you can still take him in for a strep test. He may get a false negative if he is on abs, but there's also a chance if he has strep, he can get a + on abs.

I've come across a few kids on here whose parents have been told by either a doctor, teacher, etc that their child should be screened for autism. In actuality it was their PANDAS symptoms making them appear to be autistic to those people. My son at age 5 had to be screened for Asperger's because of the list of symptoms he was exhibiting (caused by PANDAS). He does not have autism and now that he is recovered from PANDAS, he no longer would get "red flagged" as needing to be screened. Was that confusing?

I continue with his Omega 3's, multivitamin with DHA and it has a low amount of inositol in it. I stay more organic than I used to be. I try my hardest to weed out food dyes, high fructose corn syrup, etc. I don't see a direct reaction from those things, but I see it as trying to keep his body as "clean" and "pure" as possible. I don't know if anything like that could have somehow aided in messing up his immune system. I do let him have occasional cupcakes with bright frosting that screams "I am all artificial", but I also don't do all the time so it really is a treat for them. -
Bumping this up since I just got my PM from brickey.
