Hi Cheri, Would it be okay to give him a small amount of 5-HTP in the evening. He is 10, and although his pediatrician is open-minded, did various tests we wanted, I don't know if I should ask him for the 5-HTP or not. I actually have some at home I bought for myself. The only thing he takes is magnesium taurate , 375 a day, and liquid zinc, magnesium, and choline, small amounts. I want to start really small, cause it's scary messing with the brain neurotransmitters, to me. I suppose it could increase tics just like any other supplement you give your child? Thanks.

Anna, how do we know if it is a tic or a compulsion, like OCD? Maybe we'd understand how to treat it. I can understand eye rolling being a tic you can't control, but wiping your nose or mouth seems a little different. I wonder if those are two they could ignore the urge to do? Just wondering.

I am taking my son to the dentist tomorrow and needed to know if I should be worried about the laughing gas and shot they might give him when filling his cavity. This is the first time he's been since the tics started and I have no idea if he'd have a reaction to these things or not. Of course I'm going to ask what the fillings are made up of before they do any work. Does the laughing gas or shot increase kids' tics?

Are natural flavors a thing to be avoided? The Italian dressing we used had natural flavor listed in the ingredients, and also, "color added" which I figure is a definite "no-no" He's doing his throat clearing tic after eating, usually a dead give-away his food had something in it he's sensitive to.

What supplements have helped your child's focus and hyperactivity? Two things that often go along with tics. I don't know what to give my son to help him focus and to calm him down. Magnesium taurate that I'm giving him is about 300. It should relax him some. Is there anything that has worked wonders for anyone that I could try. Of course we're already watching what he eats, except I suspect high fructose corn syrup which I haven't taken out of his diet yet. I've taken so many things out maybe that's the next step.

"Just Tics"/ADHD/Learning Problems - Diet Suggestions
kallik replied to Tracey111's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
My son has tics and Add with hyperactivity. It's been pretty good with just giving magnesium taurate, but the last couple of days he's been bouncing off the walls again, doing impulsive stuff. Does the GABA plus, and focus attention pills help at all? We tested Bradley via Immunolabs.com, if you go there it will give you info. It was done by blood testing. He has no allergies but several sensitivities, and to things we'd never have suspected like apples, cranberries, chili peppers, but his big ones was wheat and cheese and milk. After we took him off of milk his eye rolling tic stopped. There's something we're missing, I suspect high fructose corn syrup, that makes him act silly, impulsive and hyper. Start with one thing at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. It's been two years for us now, and there are some tests I still want to take, like testing for yeast, pyroluria, and heavy metals. I meant to add that we had to pay out of pocket for the allergy testing, 600.00 for food and enviromental testing. Lately we found an open minded pediatrician, who is on our insurance, who will test a big range of things, vitamins, allergens, etc. He has the codes we need for our insurance to pay for it. -
Anyone know how to help my son who has a mouth wiping tic? He'll use the sleeve at his wrist or his shirt at his shoulder to wipe his mouth and it causes his lips and sides of mouth to become red and look swollen or like clown lips. He says he feels like he has excess saliva and has to wipe it. I told him to gently take a finger and lightly wipe it if he feels the urge. He was trying that today, so hopefully that'll continue. Thanks for any and all ideas.

I'm giving him 300 milligrams of magnesium taurate every day because he was clearing his throat loudly! It has reduced that considerably. He's off all milk products and drinks rice milk. This stopped his considerable eye rolling tic. We've sharpened up even more on additives and food colors, etc. He was tested for several things, one of them being his zinc levels which were allright. He was tested for candida, blood test, but I want to do a stringers test on him soon. He's another one who goes to the bathroom frequently. I give him a little liquid magnesium in warmed decaffinated tea before bed to help him relax. That might be backfiring on us! Of course the least little thing he drinks seems to go right through him! Can't remember if the doctor tested him for folic acid or not. If I give him an epsom salt bath before bed, which I believe has magnesium in it, do I have to worry about his magnesium intake during the day? Thanks everyone for your continued input.

Does anyone know what can help restless legs. My son constantly has to move his legs at bedtime, and I know he'd enjoy laying there peacefully while trying to fall asleep. I was wondering if anyone knows of a supplement, etc. that could help with this? Had his iron checked and it is okay.

Anyone think my son might benefit from digestive enzymes? I've had one doctor tell us he has the neccessary nutrients but they are not getting to where they're needed. Also, he has constipation almost every time he poops. If it would help his tics even more, I wouldn't mind at all giving them to him!

He went ahead and gave him the antibiotic because he said we're testing for strep, so let's go ahead and treat for strep. He said 50% of the negatives are correct and about 90 % of the positives are correct, and because it takes a week to get the results back they go ahead and treat. Which is a good thing I guess, except they gave him an antibiotic which has Red 40 in it! I just can't bring myself to give him Red 40 now that we've eliminated it from his diet. I'm not sure if he's even sensitive to it, it might be a good experiment to give it to him just once and see if he reacts. But I think I'll abstain!

So they did a throat culture today, (the nurse has barely no personality at all), because I specifically asked them to. The doctor in training came in first and looked at his throat and nose, and asked what other issues he has, and I mentioned the tics and he said he noticed and that the reason he noticed is because his nine year old son has tourettes! He and his wife have four younger children! I asked if he was the only one with tics and he said yes. We mentioned my son had played "Doom" on the computer and that opened up a strange discussion about how kids with tics supposedly are more susceptible to the violence in these games, and they easily fall into mysticism per these games. That I thought a little weird and ignored. Then I tried to "help" him by telling him about this forum and the good advice and how kids have gotten better from certain supplements and such and he should go to it and check it out, and he basically said no, and the only thing they had tried for their son was St. John's Wort. Oh well, another close minded doctor, and person! He asked if our son had OCD and we said no, and he said that was a little strange because "most of these kids do." Another untrue statement. Anyway, when the primary doctor came in, the whole time I was asking for a throat culture I didn't even look at the first doctor, just felt his disapproval. They gave us an antibiotic, I specifically asked for one without Red 40, but guess what they gave us? Anyway, I got the throat culture!

My son has had a sore throat for about 3-4 days and yellow mucous in nose. My husband had bronchitis, and then I caught what he had, and now my son has this. The most his temp has been is 99. I was just wondering if I should get a strep culture done just to be safe. I don't want to think negatively, but I sure don't want him to have a strep infection, and his tics to get worse! He's been practically tic free the last two days for some reason, and I'm upset because tonight for some reason he's clearing his throat again. I've been watching his diet better and giving him magnesium taurate the last two days, so I attributed his tics being better to that. I guess it wouldn't hurt to get him tested anyway.

I know to avoid artificial flavors, but our tomato sauce had "natural flavors" in it, and I thought I'd read to avoid those as well. Also, my son's new pediatrician wrote him a prescription for an antibiotic to use if he catches the bacterial infection my husband and I had. It is cherry flavored and so has Red 40 in it. What are kids supposed to use for infection if they can't have Red 40? I haven't given it to him yet. This same pediatrician is open minded and told us to avoid these artificial colors, and we asked if they had antibiotic without the Red 40 and I guess they don't make it. We did a blood test yesterday, to check for a host of things, low iron, yeast, etc. And, our insurance pays for it, because the doctor has the codes to put on the paper. He said if I found someone to do pyroluria test to put his name on there. Thank goodness for a open-minded pediatrician in Sugarland, Texas!

We've homeschooled our son for the last 2 years. He would continuously get in trouble on the bus and at school. Even with talking to the teachers and principle about his situation, they couldn't seem to "get it!" Tattling was a big issue in his classes and he would become frustrated and angry with too much structure in school. Now he does his work on the computer, 4 subjects, but is able to get up in-between and jump around, or whatever he does, to get all the wigglies out! When this started he was extremely short tempered, and got frustrated easily. He is so much more easy going now and will actually listen to us. We got him tested via blood test for allergies, and eliminated the foods he was intolerant to. We also found he had a thyroid problem and he got on medication. He gets up pretty much every day in a positive frame of mind. We've just learned to deal with him differently! He can only handle one instruction at a time. We can't say, pick up your shirt off the floor, then go brush your teeth, and take the garbage out. No way! Also, if he's trying to explain his feelings and we interrupt him, he hits the roof, and loses it! He loves to play computer games, so if he does two subjects, he can play for 30 minutes as a reward! Homeschooling works for us because you can be so laid back about it. Anyway, sorry so long, but as far as the interaction with other kids, we are members of a homeschool group, and have park days, discounted taekwondo classes, holiday parties, mothers-night-out, etc. Hope things get better!

Does anyone's child have a spitting tic? What did you do to get the spitting tic under control? Like taurine helps vocal tics sometimes, is there something that would help this?

What supplements do you give for screen sensitivity?

It is so frustrating because I can't seem to pinpoint what food is causing my son to have a throat clearing tic! It's apparent it's something he's eating, because he won't be clearing his throat, then he'll eat, and there's the throat clearing tic, loud and continuous. It's funny, because my husband has an immediate reaction to something he's eating too, for example today at Ryans, Bradley started first, and then my husband began his sneezing, nose running fit. They both say they feel like there's "junk" in their throat! His throat clearing tic got softer when I took him off of soy milk and put him back on Rice milk. His allergy testing said he is okay with soy, but I noticed the soy milk had artificial flavors. I couldn't believe it! Going to Ryans won't help because he eats a variety of things there and it would be impossible to figure out what it is. I've tried writing down what he's eating but being consistent is really hard. I think tomorrow I'm going to let him have one or two things, write them down, see if there's an immediate reaction, and then do the same thing throughout the day. It'll make it easier to pinpoint what it is with just one or two things. The things he had a sensitivity to were, cow's milk, 3, wheat, 1, cheese, 2, Quinoa, 2, apple, 1, beef, 1, coconut, 1, cranberry, 1, egg, 1, goat's milk, 1, mustard, 1, oat, 1, baker's and brewer's yeast, 1, cranberry, 1, chili pepper, 1. One of these must be lurking in his food. I've noticed maybe high fructose corn syrup, because sometimes when he drinks Sprite he seems to start clearing his throat. It's just not everytime so I don't know what to think! I wish I could get him tested for artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, and similiar additives. I hate the fact that I might have to take another thing away from him that he enjoys eating, but if it can't be helped, it can't be helped!

Anyone's child been through chelation?
kallik replied to kallik's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
I'm sorry bmom. I haven't heard of infared sauna yet. That's a new one for me. My son gets things like burbur drops, NDF PLUs, under his tongue, Algas metal detox, and Chlorella capsules, which have vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in them. He gave him Passiflora drops for his ADHD today to calm him. The doctor said it would be around two months of chelation. No urine challenge was done, but he did a body terrain test, and autonomic response therapy to ascertain he needed detox. -
Hi Patty, could you explain what Undo #s and Probiotic HML replete are? Were they given for chelation? Or detoxification? Is detoxification and chelation the same thing? How did he come to the conclusion to detox in the first place? I am just wondering because our doctor said my son needed chelation by doing a body terrain test on him, and having autonomic response therapy, where he held metals in his hand and tested him to see if he had a weakness to them. I know it sounds strange, and I don't know if I want to continue chelation with no other tests. My son gets chelated orally, with Burbur drops, Algas, NDF PLUS, and Chlorella capsules which have vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in it too. I don't know whether I'm wasting my time and money. It's supposed to be safe, but my son's impulsiveness and hyperactivity have increased, because we took him off his clonidine to do this. The doctor said to give him passiflora to calm him down. Anyway, hopefully we can help each other on this board.

When my son got tested for allergies, he had a sensitivity to milk, which I expected, because he wanted to eat cereal with milk, twenty-four seven. So we changed him to soy milk, and the doctor said he wouldn't be surprised if he got intolerant to soy milk sometime later. He recommends you only eat the same foods four days apart, to hopefully prevent them from becoming a sensitivity, or allergen. His eye rolling tic stopped after he got off of cow's milk.

Hi, itsme. You said that tic gooey feeling went away after 30 years after "the program," you were on. I was curious about that and what it consisted of. Sounds like it worked really well!

I was just wondering if anyone's child has been through chelation, if it worked, and what the doctor used. I believe Chemar's son went through this and they used Chlorella, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My son is going through it and I'm wondering if the things his doctor is using is working. It's been two weeks now. It's really hard for me to wait, I don't see improvements so far. I wonder if I could go and get a hair metals test and see if he actually has mercury and lead that needs chelated. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for all the help and comments. I've thought about doing a pyroluria test on my son in the past. I think it's a good test to get done as soon as we can. His doctor in Houston said he has the proper minerals, but they are not getting to the places they need to go. He did a body terrain test on him. Maybe he'll agree to consult with the MD who looks at the pyroluria test. If not I wonder if our general practitioner will. Proabably not. Did your sons test positive for pyroluria? Thanks.

My son seems to be sensitive to flashing lights, just now on t.v. his eyes acted up to the lightning on the Goosebumps show he is watching. His eyes will roll when we get out in the bright sunshine after being indoors. Isn't there something about a sensitivity to flashing lights? And doesn't that mean you are deficient in something? Thanks.
