Fixit Posted August 31, 2010 Author Report Posted August 31, 2010 any thoughts on this statement about shots.... Immunotherapy, or a series of allergy shots, is the only available treatment that has a chance of reducing your allergy symptoms over a longer period of time. You would receive subcutaneous (under the skin) injections of increasing concentrations of the allergen(s) to which you are sensitive. These injections reduce the level of IgE antibodies in the blood and cause the body to make a protective antibody called IgG. About 85 percent of people with allergic rhinitis will see their hay fever symptoms and need for medicines drop significantly within 12 months of starting immunotherapy. Those who benefit from allergy shots may continue it for 3 years and then consider stopping. While many are able to stop the injections with good results lasting for several years, others do get worse after the shots are stopped. One research study shows that children treated for allergic rhinitis with immunotherapy were less likely to develop asthma. Researchers need to study this further, however. As researchers produce better allergens for immunotherapy, this allergy treatment technique will become even more effective.
MomWithOCDSon Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 We've never used Aller Eaze, except a formulation under the same name that's intended for canines (our dog has allergies). Mostly, though, the canine brand is quercitin, which, refrigerated, I would think would hold up pretty well. In all seriousness, though, have you tried quercitin? It has been a LIFESAVER for us! DS used to sneeze his head off every day, and then there were the resulting issues (especially for an OCD kid) of snot, stuffed up nose, tickled throat, etc. He would get these symptoms . . . especially the sneezing . . . even while on daily Zyrtec. The quercitin stopped nearly ALL of his sneezing in its tracks. And, knock on wood, he's doing pretty well this new allergy season thus far.

MomWithOCDSon Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Re. the quercitin.. . Ours is a blend with Vitamin C and Bromelaine. Comes in 500 mg. gel caps, and we give DS 2 capsules in the morning at breakfast, and one capsule in the evening, for a total of 1500 mg. per day. We do give DS NAC, also, though I never thought of it as a cohort of the quercitin. My understanding was that quercitin is basically a natural antihistamine, while NAC was a glutamate modulator for his OCD. I have since learned that NAC is also used for respiratory ailments to help break up mucus, etc., but we were always giving it to him for the behavioral, rather than physical, impacts.
kimballot Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Someone had posted a few months ago about little allergies allergen block (http://www.littleallergies.com/). I've not tried it, but it looks like a good idea if it really works to "collect" the allergens before you breath them in. I saw it in the store and it was a little pricey... but I am thinking of picking some up for myself as I suffer terribly during this ragweed time. Has anyone used these??
patty Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 I've tried Littel allergies for my kids but it is not very practically if you are already having allergy symptoms like sneezing becuz it wipes off & needs to be reapplied. I have been giving quercetin to my son for 2 months about 500mg daily. Does anyone know if it is ok to give quercetin long term and no side effects? Pat

Pat Do you think the quercetin is helping your son.... i thought i read somewhere that you need to have vit C and Nac with it..like 3parts to 1 to not develope kidney or liver problems.... i did make him shower as soon as i thought he looked anxouse to pull.... i also gave him the isoquercetin last night 100mg... this moring..sitting there...he says..mom that shampoo worked....great(or was it the Q) either way is fine...will probably continue both...but need to see if i need to add nac also.. but is it getting to the root of the problem...where it's not just not causing allergy symptoms...but not causing brain production of dopamine or inflamation???

patty Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 fixit, i gave qucertin to control my son's cough from allergies and directly discovered it helps w/his OCD symptoms. I cut it back to 250mg/a day & the OCD is creeping back. I increased it to 500mg/day 2 days ago and the OCD is subsiding. I can't say for sure at this point, but i will post again re: OCD & qucertin. Pat

Pat Thanks...and you don't give Nac too..right?? so for my ds..it seems allergies create some skin problems...it then feels like something is biting in his hairs...and then creates the urge to pull it...so in that light it would seem that in controlling the allergy, i control the urge to pull hair... but i could be on crack and imagining everything..the self doubt is incredible...but this would have been the 3rd time with the exact same causation..just like my expiriance with the vanco... he also said he felt it starting up when school started..which is when we where just a couple of weeks off a beautiful taper that climaxed with 2 days of no tics, that i can recall....2nd day of school..we started the slide... maybe besides ragweed(we hadn't been outside much prior as to our road trip north)maybe there is something in the school????? last night he seemed depressed(this kid is never sad,,,ever, ever, ever!!!)(gets cranky, or stubborn)..then when he turned to a certain angle, i could see he had shiners...he seemed a little off this morning too!!! Sorry just venting some too...
