justinekno Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I am looking for suggestions for supplements for my son who has Lyme. He takes zinc, magnesium and vitamin c. I read somewhere that Lyme patients shouldn't take vitamin c and possibly zinc. Has anyone heard this?

I read somewhere that Lyme patients shouldn't take vitamin c and possibly zinc. Has anyone heard this? I don't think that is a problem to take those supplements while being treated for lyme. My llmd who is an integrative physician uses Myers Cocktail IVs for lyme patients and they contain zinc, lots of vitamin C, lots of B and I think magnesium. Lyme depletes magnesium I read.
justinekno Posted August 27, 2010 Author Report Posted August 27, 2010 I was reading Burrascano's guidelines for Lyme and I now see that he mentions magnesium, the b's and vitamin c. No mention of zinc but since my son is deficient, we will continue for now. I am looking for suggestions for supplements for my son who has Lyme. He takes zinc, magnesium and vitamin c. NewBeginnings Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 (edited) My son has Lyme. He takes a lot of Vit C, a multivitamin, magnesium, fish oil, milk thistle for liver support, ginger root, B Complex and Pantothenic Acid (B5) and activated charcoal. he is also on good probiotics and beneficial yeast. These two are extremely important to help balance out the GI. Watch the type of magnesium. Magnesium malate and aspertate are generally the best absorbed kind. Magnesium oxide is the hardest on your stomach and also the least absorbed. Another good way to detox and get magnesium is through epsom salt baths. Magnesium also helps a lot for any twitching. Lemon water is also a great way to help detox the liver. My son suffered from a lot of nausea and we were told to start him on activated charcoal, especially during herx's, once a day, one pill and take it at least 3 hours away from antibiotics. I saw an overnight difference in our son after we started this. A few things to be aware of when taking activated charcoal - it can turn stools black and can also make urine appear dark green in color. This is just the charcoal coming out. Charcoal is not absorbed in the bloodstream, it absorbs any bacteria in the tummy and help to bind to it to remove it. I am going to start only giving this probably 2-3 times a week now, bc charcoal can also absorb nutrients. The ginger root capsules seem to help with inflammation and upset tummy. I open the capsule and take half of it out as a full capsule seems to make his tummy churn too much. A half a capsule prevents nausea from the abx and works well for him. I'm sorry for all of the sick children on here. There is nothing worse than having a sick child. It's been a rough year for us, but I am starting to finally see progress in him. I hope your child has a fast recovery. Edited August 27, 2010 by NewBeginnings
JTs-Mom Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I also give my son extra vitamin C. It's an anti-oxidant, thus it should be helpful for overall immune system support. I was giving extra magnesium for a while, but haven't been lately. The magnesium is controversial... some docs believe it 'feeds' the borrelia (they use it to form biofilms), thus you shouldn't give it. Other docs feel that borrelia depletes the body of magnesium, therefore it is necessary to replace it with extra supplementation. Personally, I don't know what to think on this one.

I have heard the same about magnesium, but my son's twitches were so bad and the magnesium really helps him. We have seen 2 different LLMD's and have had 2 different opinions on that. Epsom salt baths are the best thing we have found so far to relax the twitching. Warm baths not hot. Hot puts too much strain on the adrenals and can actually make you feel worse.

You are right about there being nothing worse than having a sick child. I am also very concerned by how many sick children there are. I worry that there will be so many very sick kids with lyme in a few years because not enough people know that lyme is easy to get and that you must be alert to early symptoms in order to avoid a long illness and treatment. Glad you are seeing progress finally!

Glad you are seeing progress finally! The charcoal doesn't have any taste. It's in a capsule form and it's black powder inside. It looks odd, but there is no taste or smell. I was told the charcoal will draw everything out. Including any medicine. That's why they say take it 3 hours after you take any abx so they have a chance to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Charcoal has been a miracle for us. I also have Lyme and I take it during herx's or whenever I have an upset stomach. It also works like a charm on food poisoning! We were told that part of the reason for nausea is because when the bacteria die off, they end up in your stomach so your body can rid it, when too much builds up it can cause nausea. Obviously the abx cause it too though. Edited August 27, 2010 by NewBeginnings

How long has he had lyme? How old is he? I am interested in the milk thistle for liver support...my dd9 has elevated ALT/AST enzymes. She also recently had a positive Igenex Western Blot IgM. Thanks.

I suspect he has had Lyme for 5 years. We do not have an official PANDAS diagnosis. He is 9 years old. It took 3 Lyme tests to get a positive diagnosis. The first test was the ELISA test and we both were considered "negative". 2nd was Western Blot by LabCorp. Mine was CDC positive, his was not. I began to look into other possibilities for him when he still did not have a "Positive" test. That's when I came across PANDAS. During that time, an Igenex test was ran and that's when it finally showed up positive. He has responded best to Augmentin, which is not in the top choices of abx for Lyme. I'm sorry to hear your daughter has it too. Is she currently under treatment?
MichaelTampa Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 Regarding magnesium and biofilm, the concern I heard was regarding magnesium stearate, which is a filler put in some tablets--not sold as magnesium, just something to bind them together. I took a few different magnesium supplements when my lyme was at my worst--Vitamin Code's Raw Calcium (contains calcium and magnesium), Natural Vitality's Calm (contains calcium and magnesium), and magnesium malate. There are a variety of supplements that can also help with biofilm, and I believe far infra-red sauna can also help with that (but would recommend doing that gently, not as long or as hot as most people do saunas). AmbersMommy Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 I found an awesome paper on Lyme. It gives specifics for what supplements to use. I googled the doctor who wrote it. Very impressive. http://www.publichealthalert.org/pdf/LYMDXRX%202008-October.pdf
