Hi, I am a 17 year old male with a mild case of tourette's i'd say. My only tic basically is shaking my head up and down. A lot of people don't even notice I have it, but it is because try so hard to supress them and do them when no one is looking. A few people have noticed though and caused embarassment for me. My tourette's started at age 6.. Lasted a year. Came back when I was 10.. Lasted until I was 12. Then it returned again about a year and a half ago! I can't get rid of it.

I read that b-6 vitamin is very good. Last night I bought b-6, b-12, and a magnesium supplement. That is all I bought so far because I wasn't sure what else to get. I will seriously take any kind of vitamin to help me. Money is no big deal. I took those 3 this morning and my tics definatly got a bit better. It was easier to supress them. Anyway, I want to even better treat this. Any suggestions? By the way.. I have asthma and allergies. The asthma isn't that bad anymore but I get allergies during a few seasons of the year. I was also allergic to eggs and milk when I was younger. Oats also causes more tics. I used to have vocal tics when I was younger but now I only do the head shaking. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. This is something I'm very determined to make best with.

Spartan,

My best advice if you have good insurance is to either:

1. Read through these threads, and ask questions...

2. Go see an environmental doctor that tests for and treats underlying conditions and uses supplements to heal them. This is usually more effective and systematic than trial and error of vitamins. Your profile (allergies, etc...) is similar to our kids who have seen great luck. You may have elevated metals for example...

I am bumping two threads for you.

Good luck!

Hi Spartan

the true "expert" on vitamins/minerals to supplement for TS is Bonnie Grimaldi

Whether you decide to use her Bontech supplements, or simply to get guidelines based on her research and then choose other supplements, I still would highly recommend reading her website.

her original suggestions for supplementing (the protocol she helped her own child with) is at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/5207/ts_ma...bonnie_sup.html

and her current website is http://www.bonniegr.com

Here is also a thread describing the treatments that I used to help my own son

http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...p?showtopic=687

hope these are helpful to you.

Supplements have truly been life changing for my son, and he has gone from severe to mild TS and now takes only minimal supps as his whole system seems to have stabilised :(

Wow, three days since I stopped drinking milk and eating eggs. Also aren't eating artificially flavored foods and it is getting increasingly easier not to tic. Still going to clean my room. It is a mess and hasn't been dusted in about 6 months. Also adding calcium, zinc, and niacin to my vitamins. I am asking my mom about getting tested for allergies too and seeing about the bontech site. Thanks for the responses.

Spartan,

Good luck and keep reading the threads for ideas. Glad you found initial encouragement. It will take some trial and error, but really the vast majority on this site have found great improvement. The fact that you go years without issues to me gives great hope.

Please keep us posted. You see, over time, others will learn from your successes.

Please keep in mind re the allergy testing, it is the IgG (delayed reaction) that seems to impact tics most, not the IgE (immediate reaction). Both are blood tests. www.elisaact.com does the IgG test. Easier to me that trial and error elimination--IF you have the insurance/finances to do it. $300, covered by insurance, max $90-$150 out of pocket, and they test for 150 foods. However, I would make sure it included gluten (wheat) and casein (milk), those are very common.

Hi, I'm wondering if you were formally diagnosed with TS? The reason i ask is that the Tourette's Syndrome Clinic that i went to about 10 years ago-(i'm now 50, so went when iwas about 40, but felt i had had it all my life, and had been on meds- ugly old haldol which has since caused dystonia, a life time of spasms, a whole other topic tho----when i orginally went to the clinic for a formal diagnosis, i was told that the tics had to have a vocal tic included or else it might be a tic disorder,,but not tourettes, and that it had to be constant- no on again off again type of thing, ,,which makes me wonder if it is actually Tourettes that you do have..

A tic disorder might be easier to deal with, as it sounds like yours tends to come and go, and you've had such good success with vitamins.. i wish you the best of luck.. it must be tough at your age..i know i often worry about my 2 boys, 12 and 15 inheriting this from me, tho so far so good... although my 15 had a vocal tic for about 2 years, sort of a snort, tho it disappeared ..and now my poor 12 year old has a fairly bad stutter,,, i've asked my TS specialist, and she said no, that often teens do have periods where they have tics, its very normal, but they usually come and go, and usually grow out of them, and that since neither of them had a vocal tic-tho the snort was a sort of one, he had no other tics- that she felt neither had TS, just a normal teen thing,,, so hope things go well for you, hang in there!! teach1

No, I have never actually been diagnosed with it. When i was around 6 and 10-12 I only had vocal tics. Never had any motor tics. Then I had no tics until 3 years later.. The tics began again 2 months after strep throat and after my grandmother died which was a tramatic event for me. Maybe this has something to do with them starting again? I also had strep throat alot as a kid...Ever since the tics started again, they have been 95 percent motor with only a head nodding up and down. It is bad but some people don't even notice I have it because I try so hard to conceal it. It's tough though. Sometimes i have an urge to motor tic though, because all I think about is my tic and it makes me think of when I used to do motor tics lol.. It sounds ridiculous but I may have a little OCD too. But does anyone have any idea if the strep throat would have anything to do with it or a tramatic event to trigger the tics back again. I am hoping the tics dissappear again for a final time this time and don't return. Good luck to everyone.

Spartan,

If you will search the archives, we have a lot on PANDAS. Many tic syndromes AND OCD start due to a strep throat. THe persons anti-bodies start attacking health brain cells in the basil ganglia (impulse control is there), as well as the strep infection, creating an autoimmune situation.

Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorder Associated with Strep..

Some of us think that part of the problem may be the yeast issues created by the antibiotics for the strep, but clearly for some, the strep itself triggered an immune issue. Good to get retested for strep, in case a more recent infection is triggering this. Strep symptoms aren't always visilbe. Sometimes more tics/OCD ARE the only symptoms. Susanna here had that happen to her child.

Claire,

So if it does have to do with the PANDAS, then eliminating the yeast or whatever the strep left could reduce or even elimate tics? This sounds very interesting. Since I had the strep a few years back, I haven't been tested for strep since. Now that I think back, when I was 10 when the tics came back, I was home for a week and a half with strep throat. Well, I am going to go to the doctor's to get tested for it and see what the results are. Thanks for the info.

Well, I now have 7 supplements I'm going to work with.. Any tips on dosage. I am 170 pounds... I have.. Magnesium, Calcium citrate with vitamin D, Taurine, zinc, 5-HTP, B12, and B6. I also have AST Multi Pro Vitamin (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/ast/multi-pro.html)

I need a schedule for the vitamins.. I am thinking.. Morning...

250 mg magnesium

500 mg calcium citrate

50 mg B6

100 mcg B12

500 mg Taurine

Afternoon

AST multi Vitamin

Before Bed

50 mg Zinc

250 mg magnesium

500 mg calcium citrate

50 mg 5-HTP

I am trying to take the magnesium and calcium every 12 hours to get a 2:1 ratio as directed. 1000 mg of calcium a day and 500 mg of magnesium.. Any suggestions on this? Should I add anything.. Take away anything? I was thinking of buying magnesium taurate but it's about 10 dollars for only 60 pills. I would be taking 4 a day since each pill is only 75 mg. A little expensive for me.

Better to take the cal/mag all at once and NOT with zinc. They interfere with absoprtion. This site has such info, and normal doses.

B6 needs B2 to be used properly.

I can't recommend doses, maybe Chemar.

I hope you add the 5HTP alone and watch. For some it works wonders, for some it makes them hyper.

Claire,

Thanks for all of your responses. I just have a question about not taking cal/mag and zinc at the same time. I saw at the store that there was a combination supplement of zinc/magnesium/calcium. Is that different when it is all in the same pill? Thanks.
