JAG10 Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 I thought both of our girls were asymptomatic of typical strep throat symptoms. Now, I'm not so sure. Our dd7 has been a lump on the couch all day wanting to watch and veg. We're eating dinner and she says "Ouch" and to dh "remember I told you it hurts in the back of my throat." To which I frantically say "WHAT?!?!?!" Get the flashlight, her huge tonsils and adenoids are flaming red and the adenoids look like there are puss patches. Take her temperature and it is 101.3. I give the whole family the lecture about any throat issues always need to be reported directly to ME!!! Tomorrow, I'm supposed to take both girls to my mom's so she can watch them until Wed. when we leave for a 10 day vacation a few days in Disney World and then a week long cruise. So, I have to get this all straightened out TOMORROW, oiye! Recap: dd10 had IVIG 10.5 weeks ago, is going great! Dr. K said treat all infections aggressively and have dd7's gigantic tonsils and adenoids removed. So, I guess I need to get her into the office first thing tomorrow and even if she rapids negative beg for an abx prescription? What about dd10? Does she need her abx increased from Augmentin 250m?? Or should I just email all this to Dr. K who has examined both girls 2 weeks ago??? BTW, I asked dd7 how she felt and she said fine except the back of her throat yet she's running a temp of 101.3 Perhaps "asymptomatic" is in the perception of the child and what they are willing to complain about..... Any advice? Going away, what do I need to have to take with me? Full strength abx for both girls??? DD10 is doing so awesome, I can't let this get mucked up now!!!
thereishope Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 (edited) Oh, no!!!!!!!!!!!! Is there a way you can separate the girls for few days? Maybe dd10 can stay at a friend's house. Time to call in some favors. Yes, even if she tests negative tomorrow, get a script. Because of her clinical symptoms and your other daughter, I don't think you'll have trouble getting that. Don't let her use mouthwash prior to the appt. I've read that could cause a false negative. Edited August 8, 2010 by Vickie

I hope the peds office doesn't give me grief! I hate getting treated like we are junkies seeking narcotics.
P_Mom Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Jill...yikes. If it were me, I would up the antibiotic, just to be sure. Hey, we are leaving for Disney next Tuesday!! When will you be there ?
JAG10 Posted August 9, 2010 Author Report Posted August 9, 2010 Jill...yikes. If it were me, I would up the antibiotic, just to be sure. Hey, we are leaving for Disney next Tuesday!! When will you be there ? We're driving down the east coast Wednesday & staying at Animal Kingdom until Saturday morning, then we are picking up my mom and sister from Orlando airport and driving to Port Canaveral. We booked this 9 months ago, before Court was even diagnosed! Seems like a lifetime ago...
tpotter Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 Definitely email Dr. K immediately. Also, I would very definitely up the dose to full strength. That's what he had told me to do when my ds got sick after IVIG (last year.) If, for some reason, you don't get a response by tomorrow, call his office first thing! Have a great time on your cruise. How long, and which company? We're going on a cruise out of Charleston the following week (if my boys hold it together...they should have already had PEX, but we couldn't have anticipated all that happened.) We're seeing Dr. B. this Wed. and Dr. L on Thursday (covering all bases...we've been seeing Dr. L, and will continue, to, but after IVIG was denied in July, I want to know if there's any immuno stuff going on, and we're seeing Dr. B., so if we need to do IVIG in addition to the PEX, we can get it approved! So, I have a 6 hour drive round trip both Wed. and Thursday (opposite directions), and then, next week, we have a 12 hour trip to Charleston for the cruise! Then, hopefully PEX occurs for one of my boys the following week, and the other shortly after that (only 6 months after it was supposed to happen.) Boy are my fingers crossed.

Certainly sounds like your bases are covered!!! I'm guessing since you said south, Dr. L is Latimer not Legido, nothing with him huh? We are cruising on the Carnival Dream, they're are like little cities on the water! BTW, got a brief note from Denny's office; they are still working on it. So you think he'll definitely want to increase dd10 even though dd7 is the one sick? If they say wait and see, I just want to have the full strength prescription filled before we leave.
JAG10 Posted August 9, 2010 Author Report Posted August 9, 2010 SO ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dd7's rapid was negative. Dr. sent the culture, did not want to treat her until it came back, would not treat dd10 at all; waved hand in the air and said we're not talking about PANDAS. Then, gave her Dr. K's (email) recommendations for treating BOTH girls; very nasty, scribbled wrong prescription and said I must throw it out if the culture is negative. I told her she could call him and she said NO. She handed me one script for dd7, 1000mg of Amoxicillin and stomped out of the room. This is not what Dr. K rec', he said 500mg Aug for dd7 and 1000mg for pandas dd10. DD7's symptoms: fever 101.5, nausea, cherry red tonsils and adenoids, patches on adenoids, painful swallow; ears, nose and chest clear, no congestion or cough. I emailed Dr. K, hopefully he will call in his rec' and save the day. Looking for new Pediatrician when we come back from vacation. Philamom, do you like your ped???? I'm not fighting, just firing. Literally, she spent 5 minutes total with us, didn't want to be bothered whatsoever. I like the girls' regular ped, but she has two small kids and only works 2 days/week. It just isn't going to work.
LNN Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 can you get to a minute clinic at CVS or other walk-in clinic? I've had good luck there, especially if I look like I'm at wits end. They may consider Dr K's note sufficient CYA. Good luck!

Jill- Call me when you return! It seems my ped is a little more understanding--even prefers to work with other doctors who are more knowledgable about PANDAS. Hope the girls are feeling better and try to get some R&R on the cruise...please have a pina colada for me! Melinda
philamom Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 Jill- I sometimes use the walk in clinic at Walgreens at 5 points. They should be helpful with a note from Dr. K. I don't discuss PANDAS,I just mention my daughter gets strep without the traditional symptoms. I go there to get cultured when I have a sore throat...long wait though. Melinda

tired mom Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 I don't know what kind of insurance you have but with ours any doc can call in a script but an in network doctor needs to write the orders for bloodwork and such. Check out your insurance and maybe Dr. K can call in a script for you.

Check out your insurance and maybe Dr. K can call in a script for you. He can, I'm just waiting to hear back from him. Do you know this doc was so adamant about not giving me abx unnecessarily, she almost insisted on giving them to us in liquid form so we couldn't "save" any? When my dd7 piped up and said she didn't want liquid, she tersely looked at me and said "I want your word you will stop and throw the rest out if the culture comes back negative?" WHEN is that darn white paper coming out?!?!?!
