Hi Deanna,

When dh and I first got married, we lived on Carter Ave off of Harford Rd. We both grew up in Towson, MD.

Dr. K said yes to tetanus, but did not go through a laundry list of no's. I heard they are now pushing boys starting age 9 for HPV to prevent genital warts. I'm definitely saying no to HPV.

Personally, I'd just do the tetanus, but we have been unable to find tetanus shots w/o the diptheria component. Its been a few years, though. Years ago when I was saying no to vaccines, our (then) pediatrician said he respected our decision, and didn't think at my daughter's age (5) and given that she'd already been vaccinated with most of them, that they were really necessary. But, he still recommended that we do the polio vaccine because that's pretty brutal at any age.

Dr k told us a week and a half ago that the chicken pox along with rotovirus and flu shot are a joke. He did recommend tetanus. My kid is only 8 and I stopped his vaccinations at 4 yrs old. By then he had 23! Enough!

Is pertussis now in the schedule for 11 year olds?? Stephanie Cave's book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" states that children over 7 years shouldn't be vaccinated against pertussis, but my copy is 9 years old, so I supposed the "thinking" has changed in that time. I also read that on the National Vaccine Information Center's web site (just now). I thought only babies were really at risk from pertussis?? Also, I think Pertussis is considered a particularly suspect/risky component of the DTaP, even the newer acellular type.

Also, why do they need the Tetanus vaccine at age 11? Can't they just get a booster if they step on a nail at some point? I cut my arm climbing a fence in high school and I remember getting a booster at that point. I think I'd had one tetanus shot prior to that, and that was enough to prevent any problems.

As for chicken pox - that's just ridiculous.

I think the vaccine schedule has very little to do with what YOUR child NEEDS anymore - it's all about the almighty dollar.

If you want to read up, Stephanie Cave's book is great and I believe there is an updated edition. Also try www.nvic.org - National Vaccine Information Center's website.

My son had a terrible reaction to the chicken pox vaccine. I stopped all vaccines, but if Dr. K. or Dr. L. tell me to get one (such as Tetanus if my child steps on a nail), then I'll certainly consider it. But, otherwise, Dr. K. said no vaccines, and I believe him.

Here's another question to think about concerning vaccines. Is it possible that the children who become Autistic after they have the MMR vaccine at 18 months, really have PITANDS? That would certainly explain the question of why they were developing normally until that age, and then suddenly regressed. Just a thought.

But, all that being said, I am not against vaccines as a whole. They serve a very important role, and I personally know of a measles outbreak this year among a large group of children who were not vaccinated. The problem is, that for children like ours at risk, it is a problem. And, of course, no one can read the future, and know which way to go!

On tetanus shots . . . I know there are day camps in our area, etc. that will not accept a kid who's not up to date on their tetanus innoculations. Too many risks for them, I guess, if your kid is involved in outdoor activities, horseback riding, shop, etc.

With regard to vaccinations in general, I heard Dr. Kenneth Bock ("Curing the New Childhood Epidemics: ADHD, Autism, Asthma and Allergies") not too long ago, and what he said made a great deal of sense to me. He says he's not "anti-vaccination;" rather, he's for "smart vaccination." Meaning, not all at once, with a child with an immature immune system, and not at moments in time when the child may be compromised by some other issue, such as currently fighting a virus, etc. He believes much of the issue is in timing and a genetic predisposition for having trouble eliminating toxins which causes some kids to have a negative reaction to vaccines while others do not.

If I had it to do over again, I would not have made DS13 subject to all the standard vaccinations recommended for and given to him as a matter of course, and I'll be carefully watching any recommended boosters. I do think vaccinations have not helped his immunological picture overall, though that's more gut than provable. I certainly wouldn't want him prone to some of the horrible childhood illnesses like polio, but what kid of our generation hasn't lived perfectly well through a case of the chicken pox? And why vaccinate a baby for Hepatitis B when that is only transmitted through sexual activity?

Tends to make one cynical about the whole marriage between Pharma and the FDA, don't it? <_<

Not to side track, but has anyone seen that commercial on tv urging adults to be vaccinated for pertussis to protect babies?

Check out the ad for that vaccine....notice the line under the 2nd picture?

It is unknown whether immunizing adolescents and adults against pertussis will reduce the risk of transmission to infants.

This SIXTH combo of DtaP/ TDaP/DPT etc. is being recommended for exactly that reason Peg. Babies are still getting Pertussis. I suspect there have been many cases in older kids too, which were probably diagnosed as asthma. If the kid was fully immunized it couldn't be Pertussis right? I had a Dr. tell me this herself. She said she had to take swabs and prove to the CDC that it was Pertussis. How well has this vax ever worked? It wasn't dangerous (annoying yes) to the older children, but they didn't belong on a steroid for asthma either. It was pertussis.

As far as the tetanus part goes, I read in one of the vax inserts that the annual incidence of tetanus in the US was around 560 (that's close not exact) prior to widespread routine use of the vaccine.

The package insert for the vax in the ad above says protection from the tetanus portion generally lasts for 10 years. If you look at the vax schedules, would your child even need the tetanus portion yet (assuming you believe the benefit out ways the risk of the vaccine).

This vaccine contains aluminum as an adjuvant (immune system booster). No one really knew how that worked. Recently, a team figured out that it was activating inflammasomes. Hummmm...could that be a problem for some?

I could go on and on, but I'm rusty on this subject to begin with, so I'll stop here.

I do hope that every parent does some research in this area. We need parents to understand what's going on here, and make their Dr.s accountable for knowing what they're talking about when they push these vaccines.

We also need reactions reported!!!!!

These are some excerpts from an article that I had saved. When I read the supposed adverse events #'s reported after widespread use of a new vaccine, I almost want to laugh or vomit depending on the day. I know how hard it is to get an adverse event recognized as being linked to a vaccine.

'You have to Google Guillain-Barre.'" It was against the rules, for fear of feeding a patient's anxiety, but the nurse checked. "Within two hours, a new doctor was doing tests and checked me into the hospital."

According to his neurologist, Mr. Pehanic said the cause for his case is unknown. "I think that my neurologist suspected that the numerous vaccines I had in a short period of time may have sent my immune system into overdrive," he said.

In September, Mr. Pehanic and his wife, Stacie, who live in Broadview Heights, had been preparing to travel to China on Oct. 28 to adopt Chloe. They both had vaccines for hepatitis A and B, tetanus and typhoid, and they had a seasonal flu shot.

Mr. Pehanic's doctor advised him to see a psychiatrist. "She saw me twice and thought it was a conversion disorder," in which no physical reason can explain the paralysis. "She told me that the mind does weird things to the body and I started to believe that," he said.

The psychiatrist prescribed anti-anxiety drugs, "but I felt no anxiety," he said. "We had been planning the adoption for three years." In fact, the Pehanics had applied for a child with special needs to speed up the process. Chloe has a cleft lip and palate, which are scheduled to be corrected by surgery later this month.

"Eventually, the psychiatrist put me into the emergency room and checked me into a psychiatric ward. They took my shoes, shoelaces and sweat-pants string." That happened on Oct. 15. "At this point, I couldn't walk and was in a wheelchair. I was there a few days and went to group therapy. No one was allowed to talk to me because that could feed a patient's anxiety."

"It was frustrating," he said. "You know it's not anxiety, but no one was listening." He remembered what he had read about Guillain-Barre in a pamphlet when getting his vaccinations.

"On Oct. 17, I finally wheeled myself to the front desk," he said. That task was difficult because the numbness had moved up to his arms. He could not even grip a pen or write his name. "I said to the nurse, 'You have to Google Guillain-Barre.'" It was against the rules, for fear of feeding a patient's anxiety, but the nurse checked. "Within two hours, a new doctor was doing tests and checked me into the hospital."

A spinal tap confirmed that he had Guillain-Barre, he said. "From that point on, it was a matter of time. I was so happy. At least I knew what it was and what it wasn't."

I am certain that the tetanus vaccine does have the pertussis it is called "menactra" I asked the recepitonist yesterday when I made the boys appointment I am going to look into it. The office I go to does not carry just tetanus it has pertussis in at as well.

Dee,

Look up the package insert on Menactra.

Menactra

used for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y and W-135

You know how I said above that aluminum is used to stimulate an immune response? From above "Diphtheria Toxoid Conjugate Vaccine" They join the vaccine components to diptheria to kick up the immune response. It's the same with Prevnar. The babies (i think it's under two) weren't responding to pneumonia vaccines the way adults did. So they added the diphtheria and aluminum and golly gee, they got antibodies.

Dee,

Sorry, I'm making a complicated subject worse for you. Somehow, I thought you mentioned diphtheria in your last post.

I think you know they are talking about the meningitis vaccine and the TdaP now.

Our dr advised us to sit tight right now and not do any vaccines until my son's immune system recovered and was no longer "hyper" (we did all required vaccines until age 8). We will also check titers to see what, if anything, is even needed. My son is looking to return to school next year after being homeschooled for two years so that will be a fun bridge to cross. I haven't had to worry about that until now. I have to look into our state's guidelines for exemption.
