NEED to reintroduce some foods back!

Almost 9 months ago, my son has blood tests done which showed 23 allergies/sensitivities to foods. He is being treated for a leaky gut which we feel is improving. He is so much better, healthier, and even though he still has extremely mild tics at times, he's great, and our focus isn't the tics, but his overall health which we feel is the most important thing. My son was IgE postive to CORN, BEEF, AND MILK - corn being the huge thing to eliminate. We have stayed away from everything corn, including derivatives. So basically not we are gluten, dairy, soy, beef, and corn free. We just had him retested and are awaiting the new results. But we really can't go much longer staying away from corn derivatives, he is no longer eating much of anything, and he's not picky, his choices are just so limited, and he doesn't like the things he used to. He's been wonderful about it, so wonderful, amazingly wonderful - but we know it's getting hard for him, and for us to feed him. He's sick on the things he used to eat, and told me the other day he's going to become allergic to cereal because he eats it all the time. He hasn't eaten one dinner this week we have made him.

 

So, of course I'm worried about the tics coming back more if we alowl only corn derivatives. I need some reassurance or something that it's ok to be doing this. We've tried so hard, but the thought of going another week with him not eating is harder to think about.

 

Any thoughts?? Thank you!!

honestly, if he is allergic to corn I wouldnt go near it

 

there are many products out there that dont use corn (or its multiple "byproducts")and one can have a very balanced and versatile diet without it

 

what are you wanting to add that has to have corn?

I need recipes big time Chemar, I've tried so many different recipes that he just won't eat. I agree that there is stuff out there that doesn't contain corn, but we are on such a limited diet that it's like we are always eating the same thing. We can't have beef, so we eat a lot of pork and chicken, which was fine for awhile, but no longer. I'm just getting down about it all, we did ok for a while, but the past few weeks have been tremendously hard trying to find things he will eat. Thanks for you feedback, maybe I just needed to hear that:) And corn is one thing - items without dairy, gluten, soy, and corn is harder to come by.

Yes.....food allergies/avoidance is so difficult!

 

How old is your son?

 

My 19 yo son had to strictly avoid all corn products for a year and was an adamant vegan (no meat at all, no dairy, no eggs, etc) as well,....let me put my thinking cap on to try to remember what he DID eat! (he COULD eat soy.......)

 

I'm assuming you have access to some natural foods (even Meijers has many)...lots of things like spaghetti sauce, if you buy organic ones have sugar instead of corn sweetner.....and ragu has a "light" one with no sugar....that plus rice would be like a spanish rice dish.....

 

I believe there are some brands of ricemilk that dont have corn (but some maybe did?)......but I'm thinking that (or frozen rice dream?) and fresh fruit would make good "smoothies" this time of year.........

 

Can he eat nuts as a snack and get some protein that way for now?

 

Take him to a farmers market and go wild buying whatever he wants? (besides corn, I think most would be "OK"?)

 

How about stuff like hummus? (chick peas and sesame paste are main components...are they OK?) I love that stuff....and veggies or rice cakes would go with that....

 

ALSO......if you are working with a health person re: the food allergies......ask about a ROTATION diet, and if that's potentially an option? (e.g. he could eat one 'allergic" food usually every 5 days or so......)

Our family is dealing with a lot of IgG food allergies. We had to drop beef for a while and found that bison is a wonderful substitute - we were able to use it just the way we had been using beef (our grocery store carries ground bison & bison steaks). It's not exactly cheap, but the nutritional profile for bison is even better than chicken. Anyway, that allergy subsided substantially and we now eat beef about once a week.

 

We are on a 4-day rotation diet & our meats are: turkey, bison, chicken, pork, & Fridays are meatless (we are Catholic - we also can't do eggs & my DH hates seafood - Fridays have been tough!)

 

We are also non-dairy and I have mainly used water, coconut milk & coconut cream for replacements with great results. No cheese alternatives for us (no soy or rice allowed either), but we've gotten used to it & don't miss the flavor all that much though I'll admit that we do miss pizza & snacks like cheddar cheese & apples.

 

And we also had to drop corn. Our biggest difficulty with corn-free is that we miss tortilla chips.

 

We are currently doing grain-free & using nuts, nut butters, & nut flours to replace grains. I never thought that I would be able to give up cereal - it was my comfort food for the first 3+ decades of my life! - but I have found nuts to be a very tasty & satisfying alternative.

 

My biggest difficulty at this point is cooking things from scratch. There are 7 of us & I seriously miss the convenience of convenience foods! I have substantially simplified the way we eat, though, and that has helped make it do-able.

My son is 5, a very smart 5 year old who gets this. We are getting very down about it all. He's been so good about it all from the beginning, we had no choice but to embrace the change and do everything we could to ensure we eliminated his allergens. And things were ok for a long time, but he is so very tired of it all. Things he would eat and used to like, he can hardly stomach anymore, to the point where he just won't eat it. He does well with nuts, thankfully, but I'm worried about overdoing it on things just because he'll eat them, and ending up with a sensitivity to those things. Great suggestion on the Farmer's Market, we have an awesome one here in Madison.

Bison would be great, I know they carry it at our Whole Foods. So, do you stay away from all corn additives as well? Fridays must be tough....we have those days of "what are we going to eat?" Too many of those days lately. I'm hoping to get the newest allergy results this week, and I can hardly wait! I've tried so many different recipes, and many do not go over well. 7 to feed must be a huge challenge. And I totally agree, simplifying the way we eat has helped us a great deal. Once we realized we needed to eat more simple, we enjoyed our food more and cut our grocery costs a little.
