Could be -- is your son already on azith?

 

0.76 U/L or less: Negative - No clinically significant amount of M. pneumoniae IgM antibody detected.

0.77-0.95 U/L: Low Positive - M. pneumoniae-specific IgM presumptively detected. Collection of a follow-up sample in one to two weeks is recommended to assure reactivity.

0.96 U/L or greater: Positive - Highly significant amount of M. pneumoniae-specific IgM antibody detected. However, low levels of IgM antibodies may occasionally persist for more than 12 months post-infection.

I would love to know what the cure is for MP? Is it Biaxin? Is it Azith? Does anyone know???? I know he had it he tests positive for it.But I havent done anything (I dont think ) aside from 1 month Biaxin from Dr T (MIA) Hes doing IVIG every 21 days and also hes on Omicef right now Is this good enough? How do I know if hes cured?

My son did finish a 10 day course on Azith. about 2 weeks ago. Interesting that his Myco. P. is still positive after that abx. I guess we will need something else. I am working with Dr. K and will give feedback once I get answers from him. He may wait out this pred. burst we are on. Andrea

I am sure it is a factor. I would not stop there-I would make sure there are no tick-borne illnesses involved either. This is a fascinating video about mycolplasma.

The lecturer is Dr. Garth Nicholson, a respected expert on Gulf War Illness. From what I understand mycoplasma can cause all sorts of symptoms and it is not easy to get rid of, just like Lyme Disease. In fact, it often is a co-infection with Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses. Any child with mycoplasma should be fully evaluated for lyme, bartonella, babesia, etc. Blood tests miss a lot of lyme and other tick-borne diseases b/c the tests are not very sensitive so it remains a clinical diagnosis. I strongly believe our kids easily suffer from multiple co-infection or are susceptible once original strep infection occurs. I swear my DD could breeze by someone and get sick (her Iggs are extremely low).

 

Santi: If I remember correctly you are in the Bay Area. I do have the name of a Lyme literate Dr. located in Redwood City if you interested in pursuing additional testing for co-infections. It is very possible you have found out what is wrong after 5 years and I encourage you to keep digging. If Lyme is involved you'll want to attack with multiple high dose antibiotics prior to IVIG.

Thanks for your message. I am happy to help and sometimes feel like I am a broken record. I just hate to see anyone go undiagnosed as my son was. If only I had the information when his symptoms first arose...Also, I know of quite a few people who have discovered that tick-borne illnesses are a factor with their child who has PANDAS. The Lyme cases are out of control, as I am sure you know, and I worry about how many really sick kids we are going to have in the future if they don't do something about getting children the proper diagnosis and treatment of these tick-borne illnesses.

Ok, I had to jump in on this issue because it hits too close to home. Hopefully you guys can tell me if this is the same as what you are discussing. A little history - I don't stop by very often anymore because my PANDAS son who is now 14, is doing very well, and with three kids now, our house is extremely hectic (as you all know). However, my six year old daugher has had some vague issues that fit in the PANDAS category but never an abrupt onset like my son. I haven't really been able to link this to a specific trigger. Mostly behavior issues, regression, sleep issues, and stomach complaints. Well, this winter she has had pneumonia three times. For me (I am a nurse), this seems like way too much for what is considered an otherwise healthy child. The last time, it took a while for her to recover and her pediatrician said it was probably mycoplasma pneumonia and tried to switch her antibiotics from omnicef to zithromax. We have such a hard time getting her to take any meds and she just kept throwing up the zithromax. Never could get her to swallow it and keep it down. So she just finished out the omnicef and she did recover. Seems fine now, one month later. Question is, is there a link from this type of mycoplasma and PANDAS issues. Since I'm not here so much anymore, I am rusty on the latest research. Gosh, I shudder at the thought of having to go through this with her. She is an extremely strong willed child. Getting her to swallow medicine, or do anything outside of what she wants is a major ordeal. It would be huge to get her through everything my son went through. Anyway, just looking for opinions. Thanks so much guys. This forum and everyone here is so great. We are lucky to have each other to turn to.

I'm confused. Is Mycoplasma Pneumoniae a form of pneumonia or is it a tick-borne infection? My son has had 6 bouts with pneumonia and has tested positive for Bartonella, a Lyme co-infection. So either way, it could be relevant to us, but I am just confused about what it IS exactly. What are the symptoms?

 

Also, Dedee, I just read last night that if a child has had two or more pneumonias in one year, they should be tested for primary immunodeficiency. This was from the Jeffrey Modell Foundation.

Just got time to WATCH video........ SCARY and thank you for posting. It confirms in my mind why so many children who attended a playdate in 2007 that are not genetically related children and are now PANDAS. 5 fo 5 children.
