Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Thanks to Dr. T., my son was tested for Mycoplasma and it is elevated 3 x the norm. Thanks again Dr. T. and thanks for all your hard work. I can't wait to see my son well again some day.
KeithandElizabeth Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 I am so happy that you have found a cause for your son's illness. I am curious, though, as to how you treat mycoplasma differently? My son has shown borderline levels of mycoplasma as well as high strep and he is on zithromycin. I was hoping that this was good enough for both illnesses. elizabeth

Thanks again Dr. T. and thanks for all your hard work. I can't wait to see my son well again some day. Did your son have obvious symptoms of mycoplasma or just the PANDAS like symptoms? Just had my daughter tested yesterday and am anxious to find out the results. She's always been very healthy other than PANDAS symptoms these last 3 years. Dr. T said that a different antibiotic is used for mycoplasma. Angela
GatsMom Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Thanks to Dr. T., my son was tested for Mycoplasma and it is elevated 3 x the norm. Thanks again Dr. T. and thanks for all your hard work. I can't wait to see my son well again some day. My son is another mycoplasma kid, discovered because of Dr. T. Yes, it does mean a different abx...a macrolide..like Azith or Biaxin (clarithromycin). Mine didn't respond initially to Azith but had a nice result from his first 5 days of Biaxin. We've had to abandon all meds in the past 48 hrs because of a stomach bug (which is really spinning his anxiety through the roof). My son is also completely asymptomatic with his mycoplasma...only his PANDAS symptoms of ocd, anxiety, tics, etc. Had Dr. T not tested for it, we would have never known.
ajcire Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Ok... so is this something that if my kid has had strep with only symptoms being tics/emotional liability/very minor short lived ocd.... that I still need to be checking for or is this important for those who don't find the strep? Wondering when Dr. T started doing that as standard to check.. I don't think that was checked with my kids when their bloodwork was done and I really hate to prick them again.
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 My S had strep as well. ASO was 1014 back in October. It was 776 2 weeks ago when checked again. I didn't know to check the mycoplasma until Dr. T. He was asymptomatic with both strep and mycoplasma (except for the extreme, incapacitating, OCD/Tic/Anxiety). I hope this helps
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 My S was on Azith, but a prophylatic dose 500 mg 3-4 times a week. He is 6'1" and 158 lbs. He now is on Clyndomicin 4 times a day.
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 Hi Angela, he may have had a little sore throat about 3 - 4 weeks ago, but no other symptoms. He didn't have any strep symptoms other than sudden onset of incapacitating OCD/Tics when he was first tested 6 years ago but had + culture with aso of 471. He didn't have any strep symptoms back in October, other than incapacitating OCD/Tics but had a ASO of 1014. It was difficult trying to get the Dr. up here to test for strep without any symptoms. I had to tell her twice, that he doesn't get symptoms.
justinekno Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 How is this tested? Blood work? Thanks to Dr. T., my son was tested for Mycoplasma and it is elevated 3 x the norm. Thanks again Dr. T. and thanks for all your hard work. I can't wait to see my son well again some day.
Suzan Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Wondering when Dr. T started doing that as standard to check.. I don't think that was checked with my kids when their bloodwork was done and I really hate to prick them again. He wasn't doing it when we went in December. I'm going to ask for it the next time my kids get stuck but won't make a special trip for it, just adding it to the growing list!
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 Yes, bloodwork, I forget the name of the test though, sorry.
Kay Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Thanks to Dr. T., my son was tested for Mycoplasma and it is elevated 3 x the norm. Thanks again Dr. T. and thanks for all your hard work. I can't wait to see my son well again some day. I am a little confused and need some help with the Mycoplasma. My daughter had blood work for Step and Mycoplasma requested by Dr. K. what came back was. Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Antbodies (IGG, IGM), EIA M. Pneumoniae AB IGG, EIA 4.29 H <=0.90 ISR Reference Ranges: 0.90 Negative - no Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Antibody detected 0.91-1.09 Equivocal >=1.10 positive - Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Antibody detected A Positive result indicates that the patient has antibody to Mycoplasma. It does not differentiate between an active or past infection.. The cliniclal diagnosis must be interpreted with the clinical sings and symptoms of the patient. M. Pneumoniae AB IGM, EIA 62 <770 U/ml Reference Range: <770 u/ml negative 770-950 u/ml low positive >950 U/ml positive Anti- Streptoysin O 85 < or = 200 IU/ml DNASE-B Antibody 120 titer Reference range: Pre-shool =< 60 titer school =< 170 titer adult =< 85 titer First the titer on DNASE-B Reference range she is 19 so where do you think she should fall in those references? If adult it is up a bit if not its low. On the Mycoplasma it is the IGG that is measuring high at the 4.29 and it says it doesn't differentiate between active or past infections. Are the kids that are seeing the Mycoplasma showing active infections and if so how is that determined? My daugther started out with augmentin 875 for 28 days saw great improvement, was off for about 5 and back slide. Was put back on 1/2 dose and had some anxiety attacks it seemed 2 hour after each dose. Went off and in another 5 days while off had a meltdown, something we have not seen for awhile nor had we been seeing the anxiety attacks at home before the augmentin. We put her back on the 875 but it is just giving her so many stomach issues (which are a problem anyway) this is not helping that. She just does not feel well in general since starting it again, today we saw an anxiety attack did not last long but it was there. She had done much better the first 28 days. She does say though even though she feels physically sick her mind is clear, reading, writing, thoughts are all easier and clearer for her. We are inbetween dr. appointments, paperwork has been sent to two and we are awaiting their offices to get back to us. I also heard from Dr. Cunningham today and she will be sending out the kit for us to do that testing. Any input would be appreciated here on these test numbers, I don't think the augmentin should be causing her this much distress ( but also had the good results) and I am wondering if we are on the wrong antibiotic) Just a side note here too, she never had any Strep symptoms or Mycoplasma Pneumoniae symptoms that we know of. Kay
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 20, 2010 Author Report Posted February 20, 2010 Hi Kay, I don't fully understand the test results either. I have been told that Augmentin doesn't work for mycoplasma though. There are a few others listed here that people have tried for the mycoplasma. My S is on Clindomycin for it, but it can be rough on the stomach. It might not be a good one for your d if she is having stomach problems.

Yes the stomach issue really complicates things because that is already an issue for her and this doesn't help to feel sick that way too. Maybe there is something out there that doesn't upset the stomach so much, we will see.
matis_mom Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Yes, bloodwork, I forget the name of the test though, sorry. I just wondering what the symptoms are for M. Pneumonia... My son also has the antibodies for it, but I never knew he had it. I am just wondering if I can figure out when he might have had it and what to look for in my other kids as far as symptoms go. But it seems many hear are testing + without symptoms?
