Supplements and Vitamins HELP!

Mandy NJ

Recommended Posts

Hi Mandy and welcome

supplementing magnesium and ensuring a good pure multivitamin/mineral supp is usually the way to start.

I have a link in my signature on what helped my TS son. other members have additional supps that they have found helpful, but for TS, magnesium seems to be most important.

you can also read up more at Bonnie Grimaldi's website. She has forumulated a specialized product to help with TS that most people respond very well to. Even if you decide not to use BonTech, the ingredients listed there will give you some idea of what is used

http://www.bonniegr.com

dont hesitate to ask many questions here...it can all be very overwhelming to start, but as you start getting direction, it becomes a lot easier

re the magnesium, many find the Natural Calm form (or Kids calm for younger children) very good (it is usually cheapest from iherb.com ) as well as taking epsom salts (mag sulfate) baths

Hi,

I am interested in what vitamins and supplements people have been successful using to help with TS. I have begun reading but am a bit overwhelmed and unsure what to try first. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion

In my reading i had seen that magnesium seemed to be the one most mentioned. I think you are right...magnesium and a good multivitamin may be a good place to start...

Hi

I have been following this site for a while and trying to help my son for awhile. I started him on Bonnie's vitamin supplements 3 weeks ago and haven't seen results so far, but I know she said it could take time. I am definitely clearing his system out as I have had him on medication in the months of Oct, Nov, Dec. They did not work for him, he suffers with a severe eye twitch, leading to a swollen, painful, bloodshot eye. I am now reading posts about PANDAS, wondering if this could be the root cause of the things he deals with. I have researched, been to doctors, tried different things, thought he had TS, tic disorder, OCD behavoirs, and now I am wondering if he could be suffering as a result from PANDAS. I currently have him on Zithromax (he's about 5 days into it). He has been to psychologist, neurologist, allergist. I don't even know what his diagnosis is at this point and I am overwhelmed not even knowing what he needs. We have tried everything it seems and now my mother's instinct is telling me to start over and I guess rule out PANDAS diagnosis. He responded to medications (Abilify, Risperdol) in low doses three years ago and didn't respond at all this last round. He had such severe side affects, I took him off with the help of the doctor, and I will NEVER put him on them again. He is currently on Intuniv to help with his ADD, thinking about taking him off that, but I know it helps with tics, so I don't want to shock his body so much that even more come back. I honestly think his body is "detoxing" and maybe that is why he is not responding to supplements right away. I am currently reading Saving Sammy. I am so sad because I feel like nothing is helping him. He is trying everything myself and the doctors come up with and he is angry that nothing is helping. His doctor wants to put him on Orap, but I don't want him on any more heavy duty medications right now without trying the natural path. He is not allergic to wheat, so I don't feel that needs to be removed from his diet. I've started eliminating things from the diet, dairy right now, but I still don't see results. TV and video games have been gone for two nights, he still has motor and vocal tics. I feel so sorry for these kids who just want a normal everyday life of going to school and being able to talk to people normally. He hides his face, puts his head down all the time, can't look people in the eye. I won't give up, I just need a second, third, fourth wind to proceed. Anyone ever see the vitamin supplements not kick in right away and then work gradually? Also, the zithromax, does that usually take time as well? Any words of advice would do me a world of good at this point. I have contacted the center Dr. Murphy works at in Florida, I am just wondering what we are in for as far as testing. Truly glad to have at least found this site, all of you are angels and such dedicated parents. I'm in the same boat, just hoping to have a good ending to tell at some point.

So sorry you and any of us are here, but here we are together.

I don't have any answers as a i am still searching and looking for that specific correlation.,combinatoin...thing is, i almost have too many things it could be.(head injury, teeth problems, neck problems, allergies, strep trigger, autoimmune including thyroid, arsenic overload, early vaccines and feaver? and on and on and things i am still looking into Lymes, other bacteria, salicilatyes, immunology, candida though that might be under control????

If you look at bonnies page it shows that some people took 2 months and if i am correct...some did it for 3 months no results...went off and then tried again later and they had some response....but i could be reading it wrong. i have not tried her particular vitamins (yet)

Hi,

You may want to start by understanding where your child may be defficient. There is a lab call Spectracell where you can get MicroNutrient Testing done - they look at your Vitamins, Amino Acids, Metabolics, Fatty Acids, Minerals, Carbohydrate Metabolism, and Antioxidants at the molecular level... how much of this is actually absorbed into your cells - not what is floating around in your systme. I did this for myself and my two daughters and it was very interesting and informative to see what we each uniquely needed. Then I pulled together a supplement plan for all of us that addressed each of our issues - I didn't want to have three different plans, and I was able to do this with the following plan:

Country Life Super 10 Antioxidant (gave us the Vitamin A, C, E Zinc, Selenium and NAC we needed among other things...)... also good is the Vitamin Store Super 10 Antioxidant - gives you more vitamin B-12, but less NAC... so it depends what you need - but both look good.

Pioneer Chewable Calcium and Magnesium

Source Naturals Co Q 10 Lipoic Acid

Nature's Plus Choline Sustained Release

Nutramax Omega Mint Purified Fish Oil (They like this, but I am also gong to have them try Learning Factors Balanced Omega 3 (extreme Peach Flavor) because it has the borage and GLA as well)

Animal Parade Vitamin D3 Chewables (I give the 2)

Renew Life Ultimate Flora

I hope this helps you. It took me a week to get this all sorted out (after I had the SpectraCell Results)- so I feel your pain! I tried to minimze the number of pills they had to swallow and include as many chewables as I could find! I don't necessarily know that anyone of these in particular helps TS... just that this helps my kids in the areas where they have deficits and that helps the immune systemn general. You can buy these online at the Viamin Shoppe and get printouts of their ingredients online. I did that and then showed my doctor the ingredients to be sure there wasn't a risk of them getting too much of anything. Both my daughters doctors approved this mix.

FYI, you or your doctor can order the SpectraCell Laboritories test at 800-227-5227

Hi and welcome

if you are dealing with PANDAS, it doesnt surprise me that you wouldnt be seeing improvement with Bonnie's supps as they are specifically designed for Tourette Syndrome, and would not be addressing the main issues

related to PANDAS (infection/inflammation) You are wise to hold off on additional tic medications until you are sure what is actually causing the tics.

you may want to also post on our PANDAS forum to get input from parents there
