GEAF2816
Hello everyone, thank you for the invaluable information on this forum! I have a 15 y/o son with tourettes and some mild anxiety, ocd, shyness. I've just been reading this forum for 2 days and decided to try magnesium to lessen his tics. My son drinks milk and eats cheese regularly, so I don't plan on supplementing his calcium at this time. He also takes the multi vitamin, gummy vite, which I buy at costco. Currently trying 5htp, but I haven't noticed any change. I will stop the 5htp when we start the magnesium at first. Few questions, 1. Is there a difference in effectiveness between CVR Magnesium Taurate capsules versus Natural Calm powder drink? The capsule would be preferable/easier to give him, if it isn't too large to swallow. what is the size of the capsules? 2. Taurate has 125mg each, so I assume he would start slowly, but probably end up with 375-500mg (3-4 capsules per day)? 3. Natural Calm, I assume start at 1/2 tsp, but end at 1 tsp/twice a day. 4. I would prefer that the magnesium be most effective between 8am-4pm, while he is at school, so I would prefer to give it to him around 7am. Is the magnesium something that has to build into his system, or can it be taken as needed? 5. Does the liquid citrate magnesium absorb better for quicker relief over the capsules? Thank you so much, I'll post with our results, soon hopefully.
Chemar
Hi and welcome the addition of the amino acid taurine that is in the mag taurate is very different in effect from the mag citrate that is in natural calm if it were me, I would give the mag taurate in the mornings and the natural calm at night. (usually magnesium and taurine would be optimal for tic reduction at around 300-500 mg of each per day) do note that some people have reported that there kids dont tolerate taurine too well (minority but still worth noting)
GEAF2816
Thank you Cheri, I've read many of your posts and thank you for all your researching and sharing! One other question, my son doesn't have any sleep problems. He's a sound sleeper from 10:30pm-6:45am. Do you still think I should have him take natural calm in the evenings? His main issue are various facial tics, blinking one eye then the other followed by a grimacing of sorts and exhaling through his nose into each fist. When he was younger, he had burping, hand rotating, the common hmm hmm and neck/head twirling. He would like to be able to control/suppress these tics during the school day, but once he's at home, he's very comfortable ticcing and we're fortunate that for now, it doesn't affect his ability to do homework or concentration. I should add that in the evenings at home, his tics are very mild. It does appear new and/or social situations exacerbate his tics. I'm still a little confused what the capsule vs the liquid form of magnesium is each best for, or should I assume that they just work well together? Can the natural calm be taken as needed, such as before a school social event? I would give him the magnesium taurate capsules daily though. So much to learn, thanks again. Chemar
the ionic form of magnesium in the natural calm is very rapid acting. it does make one sleepy(at least that is our experience) and can have mild laxative effect. But yes, it can be taken at any time, and especially when you want that "quick fix" action the Magnesium taurate is a compound of magnesium plus the amino acid taurine and so a very different supp than magnesium citrate.Taurine has it's own unique action in helping to reduce tics and so the mag taurate is effectively a dual action form
JamesO
This is beyond interesting. I was researching the differences between Natural Calm and CVR magnesium taurate for TOTALLY different reasons (aiding in reducing cortisol levels) and Google brought me here. YESTERDAY I was telling my wife that I'd like to go to the doctor to get help with my tics. I sniff like crazy, and it's super annoying. I've had various tics my entire life. If I were to get a bottle of the CVR magnesium taurate caps, to be used in addition to the Natural Calm, would that likely produce a noticeable reduction in tics? What about dosing? I didn't see anything concrete above. We've been drinking 2 tsp. of Natural Calm for the past two nights and like the deep sleep we've had. Would I take the mag taurate in the morning as was mentioned? Should I just take 1 cap in the morning with breakfast? Natural Calm has 325mg of mag citrate, so the total, I believe, would be around 450mg total. Apprx. how long does it take to see positive effects? Immediately? A week? JamesO
Also, if I take the mag taurate in the morning, will I be sleepy?
Cj60
Hi, We have been supplementing our son, 9, with mg (Natrual Calm) for around 7 months. It is one of our mainstay supplements, and we consider it to be effective. We give 1 tsp. nightly, and recently I've been giving 1/4 tsp in the a.m. along with his multi. But we do other things along with the mg supplementation. I'm not sure that the mg by itself would have had the positive effects we have noticed when combining it with 1) a clean diet, and 2) a good multivitamin. I don't have my neurotransmitter info handy, but if I recall correctly, taurine aids in the production of GABA, an important inhibitory neurotransmitter, so it's seems a perfect combination with mg for people with exitatory neurotransmitter issues. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm aware of it. Just fyi, I'm listing two of Bonnie Grimaldi's links below. One is information on Mag. Taurate; the other is a note on what Bonnie considers to be important dietary information, just as a kind of intro to very important role of diet and tics. If you search this forum, you'll find loads of information on diet related issues. Testing for food related allergies is something I would highly recommend. Good luck, Chris http://bonniegr.com/ts-plus-magtaurate.html (check the ingredient brochure for info) http://bonniegr.com/ts-plus.html Edited March 21, 2011 by Cj60
