Megs_Mom
megs mom- did you ever (I am sure you have...) try opening a capsule of probiotic and putting it in something yummy. Julia likes it in a bite of brownie or a strawberry. I do, however, find she has a limit to how many things I can give her a day (one with each meal is about it...) Nope, I am a newbie to many things & until I got her brain back to normal, I was frankly opposed to adding more than one thing at a time very slowly. So we have Omegas, Vit D & a multivitamin, in addition to Prevacid (ulcers) and Z-pac. That took me about 5 months total (and remember we had contamination issues for much of that time, which added complexity to the process - should have heard our house the first night we took the z-pac! Someone posted about keeping the windows closed once - ours were definitely closed then. Now we are working on the probiotic side of things. Do you mean that you dip the strawberry in the powder? fuelforall
Fuelforall... Here is the link discussing it.....the mention of Azith not be recommended as prophylaxis due to resistance (mentioned as a macrolide) is in the last paragraph of the entire article. Hope this helps. Kelly http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov/pdn/pubs/pub-9.pdf What I've heard is that it's a five year old study and there was a major Strep outbreak a couple years back in the Northeast and only Zith could fight it. Virulent strain of strep eludes vaccine By Laura Beil (NY TIMES) Published: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 THat said, my son may have gotten his strep long before 2008. So I will be watching. P_Mom
Did the strep elude antibiotics...or vaccine...I am confused on your post. I live up here and don't recall that (doesn't mean it didn't happen) All I know is that Zith has falied for us in the past (2007)...for US....I am not comfortable with it...if there are resistant strains out there....no thanks. Like I have mentioned ....it is so variable with the children, the strain, your location, their immune systems, how long before treatment...etc. Just keep trying till you find what works for you! Best wishes! kelly

dcmom
I agree about the yogurt, however, if Julia finds out I put it in- she doesn't enjoy her yogurt. Her preference is to get it over with. I take a small strawberry, hollow it out with a knife, and put the powder from the capsule in there. She takes it with a chaser of either another strawberry, grapes or a piece of candy. Alternately, if I have a brownie, I cut a bite size piece and hollow out the middle again... I started buying culturelle and florastor capsules. I don't know why, I like the pre pkgd dose, and we travel a lot. PS- she takes the steroid the same way- the pill crushed up in a strawberry... I have not been able to add anything else either. Her limit is a multi vitamin, once daily antibiotic, probtiotic. I wish I could get some omegas in, but haven't been able to... matis_mom
My gut sez my son has strep.... in his gut. Is any one antibiotic more effective at eradicating strep in the gut than another? Probably a stupid question, but thought I'd ask it. Fuelforall, My son has it in the gut, and what our original doctor put him on was Cefuroxime + Vacomycin. The Vancomycin is supposed to just go through and kill bacteria along the GI track, it does not get absorbed into the body. Dr. Latimer changed the Cefuroxime to Augmentin, but said it was OK to keep the Vancomycin. I have to say he is having a lot of bathroom issues on Augmentin, he seemed to handle the Cefuroxime better. But still, we'll give the current regimen a month and go back to Dr. Latimer. He has been on abxs since July, and I don't think it's been erradicated yet (of course it hasn't helped that other people in the house have gotten it!) How did your son's strep get found in the gut? What test was done? How did you get to the root of the matter.
EAMom
We're in N. CA. Amoxicillin didn't work for us. Ceftiofur (which is a stronger version of Kelfex) didn't work for us. We saw some initial mood improvement with Augmentin (note, we didn't do super high Sammy doses), but still lots of OCD. Augmentin also failed to clear our strep carrier dd. Azith. worked for our PANDAS dd and also cleared our carrier dd.
EAMom
My dd loves the Good Belly juices (available at Whole Foods, Safeway has them in the little expensive single serving size). Initially, I mixed the juices (eg. the blueberry flavor) with regular grape juice (that she was used to)...it turns out she likes them straight. She also likes the Mango flavor. http://www.goodbelly.com/

I wish I could get some omegas in, but haven't been able to... Does she eat eggs? I buy DHA eggs http://www.goldcirclefarms.com/products/o3_eggs_cf12.html (I think I read that most of the DHA is in the yolk.) I also add a bit of Flax Seed Meal http://www.bobsredmill.com/flaxseed-meal.html to dd's morning pancake (which I also put an egg into), and cook with Canola Oil (which is one of the best omega-3 oils). You could also buy canned salmon and make "salmon fish sandwhiches"...like tuna sandwhiches but with less mercury.
dcmom
I put flax meal into anything and everything possible, and I do buy the omega 3 eggs.... Although, I secretly wonder if the omegas are a fad.... I have to re read what Marion Nestle says....
matis_mom
Huh. How did your son's strep get found in the gut? What test was done? How did you get to the root of the matter. Our doctor suspected PANDAS because of the OCD, and taking his medical history there were some GI issues, so besides checking his blood, they also checked the stool, and the tests came back with high streptozyme, ASO, Dnase titers, and streptococcus in the stool. He has been under treatment since July. Physically, he is better (not so tired all the time, more energy), but the OCD and anxiety are still strong, so to tell you the truth, I don't think we've gotten to the root of the matter yet. Are maybe we have, it will just take time. The doctor that originally diagnosed him said it would take about a year... We are working with Dr. Latimer now to see if with steroids or maybe IVIG we can see some improvement on the neurological side...
dut
dcmom - have you tried the jelly bear omega things.. you can get them at trader joe's and also the dr sears site sells them.. dunno how good they are but the trader joes ones go down a storm at our house. thereishope
For those looking to add Omega 3's ino the diet w/o taking a supplement, they now offer many foods with Omega 3's incorporated in it. Peanut butter, pasta, butter/margarine.... And it is all reasonably priced. I have very picky eaters and you can't tell something has been added.
