patty
Hi guys, I have been pretty quiet lately because i am alittle preoccupy with my son's teeth & OCD issues. In looking back, i think my son had some minor compulsions as a child, such as using his shirt to wipe his mouth, adjusting his shirt.... But those things have come & go. Lately, as he is older, i started to notice more of his compulsions and he is start to notice them & tell me about them. These compulsions are still fairly minor, like touching things, moving things, tapping things.... His ND is suggesting to do a stool test to find out about gut issues to deal w/allergies, tics and OCD. Is this the RIGHT direction? I am also afraid what we may find and need to take supplements and fear if the supplements may aggravate his current tics & OCD issues. I also have a consultation appt w/a cranio-facial orthodontist in about 2 weeks to address my son's underbite issues and hope that he can treat the tics & OCD via correcting the underbite. Any feedback is appreciated! I have been dealing w/my son's issues about 4 yrs now and i am practically brain dead!!! Pat
Chemar
Hi Pat we had conventional allergy testing via skin pricks and also radiogenics and then did elimination diets to rule out any specific sensitivities I dont know about stool tests for allergies apart from the chemicals and dustmite (and penicillin) my son doesnt appear to have food allergies, tho he has personally found that any form of corn is not good for him re supplements, you could see what they suggest and then post here for input on them re effect on tics
Megs_Mom
The absolute best therapy for OCD is called ERP - Exposure & Ritual Prevention. It has been tested in dozens of research studies. Since your child's OCD is mild and he is communicating well about compulsion, you may want to get the workbook "What to do when your Brain Gets Stuck". This is so helpful, and you may be able to do much of the ERP work at home. The sooner they start to "boss back", the easier it is to learn these tools. Chemar
ERP is a recommended therapy for OCD and altho it works for some, I have heard from some people who have tried it that their kids were not happy and were very agitated by it...same with CBT. some people really do NOT cope well with having to focus on their OCD so yes where ERP works well for many people, it isnt necessarily the answer for everyone what Pat seems to be referring to is more trying to discover and treat the root cause of the OCD issues rather than just looking for a therapy to help deal with the symptoms
