momtocole1 Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 My son started on the "saving sammy" dose of Augmentin about 7 days ago and he is complaining of a lot of itching. I'm thinking it from the Augmentin. Should I do Benadryl? He is also losing his appetite. OCD is still less than it was so that is good. He is also really silly, I mean silly like a 4 year old. Giddy almost? Last night he ran in the bathroom and told me that he threw up. I was so worried that he threw up the Augmentin. He was just kidding. Trying to play a joke on me. It is like he is going back to a younger age? Like where he left off? Does that make sense? Thanks, Judy...

Silly, giddy as in playful, or silly. giddy as in crazy laughter outbursts that seem a tad extreme...the second kind can be a sign of yeast.
momtocole1 Posted October 20, 2009 Author Report Posted October 20, 2009 Dear Peglem, It isn't like crazy laughter outbursts it is just like he just wants to be really silly and make me laugh. I can't even remember when he would do that before. He is not hysterically laughing really, just trying to be a ham and be really silly and very dramatic. More like a younger child. I am really enjoying it actually, and I can't believe it is happening. But I got scared when his teacher just called and said that he is itchy. I stopped the probiotics because he had what seemed like an adverse reaction when I gave them to him last week. Pediatrician wants me to start Nystatin, heavier duty probiotics, biofilm stuff, vitamin c, d, e. I don't want to change anything until I have my phone consult with Dr. K. next Monday. Do you think the itching is yeast? Thx, Judy... My son started on the "saving sammy" dose of Augmentin about 7 days ago and he is complaining of a lot of itching. I'm thinking it from the Augmentin. peglem Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Could be. The high dose abx w/o probiotics makes me suspicious. But, even yeasty sillies are better than PANDAS meltdowns.
Kayanne Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Could this possibly be a reaction to the Augmentin? My dd6 was given amox, and broke out in a rash about 5 days into it, but her ped said it was more of a "side effects rash" than an allergic reaction...and I was told to finish the medication. My oldest daughter also broke out in an itchy rash on Amox after about 3 days...that time they told us it was an allergic reaction. Augmentin is amoxicillin & clavulanate potassium. Is there a rash at all, or just itching? I think just itching can be yeast...but I'm no expert. ~Karen

faith Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 judy, the pamphlet on augmentin that I have states "a very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. ....." I think you'll have to see when he gets home where the itch is and examine his body for signs of rash. re the silliness, I'm thinking maybe he is actually beginning to feel good, so he is happy, and this is his way of showing it?? don't forget, as you said, you were used to a certain kind of normal. don't really know, just speculating. Stephanie2 Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 In my experience, here are our signs of yeast: silliness (so much so that he cannot follow directions, eat his lunch, etc...), bedwetting, and crashing into and jumping off of the couch ("bouncing off the walls type of behavior"). I think also "spaciness" can be a yeast thing. I have gotten so good at detecting yeast by his behavior that I can predict on what nights he will wet the bed and I put a diaper on him... With that said, I think that if the laughter seems more genuine, rather than manic and out of control, then he is probably just learning to enjoy life again (he probably feels so free without his ocd anxiety). I would really caution you to consider putting him back on probiotics (keeping in mind that yeasty behaviors will get worse for a few days before they get better). Maybe you just need to try a different strain/brand. Saccharomyces Boulardii is really good b/c the antibiotic cannot kill it (it is a "good yeast" that you would have to dose away from the nystatin). And I agree with peglem, I would take yeast over pandas ANY DAY! Stephanie My son started on the "saving sammy" dose of Augmentin about 7 days ago and he is complaining of a lot of itching. momtocole1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Report Posted October 21, 2009 Dear Stephanie, Re: your comment: (see below) Saccharomyces Boulardii is really good b/c the antibiotic cannot kill it (it is a "good yeast" that you would have to dose away from the nystatin). Is that brand available in a health food store? Or would I need to get it from a nutrceutical type company? Also, I didn't understand the part about a good yeast that you would have to dose away from the nystatin? Sorry, still kinda new to the yeast stuff, if you could elaborate on that I would really be grateful. Have a good night, Judy... T_Mom Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I think it would be important to ask a doctor about the use of probiotics--all types of stomach issues/etc. may occur otherwise... Have you tried varying the probiotics? Good Belly drinks from whole foods, Dan Active immunity drinks, or the Pearl antibiotics? and yogurts?
faith Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Judy, Is he still itchy? where? did you examine him for any rash? Faith
colleenrn Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Itching is listed as a side effect of Augmentin. If you take Amoxicillin or Augmentin whileyou have mono, you will get a rash, but it tends to be hives. Colleen
faith Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Judy, Is your son still itching? are you still using the high dose? Last night my son told me his butt cheeks (don't laugh) were itchy in school and he had to go to the bathroom to scratch it. He said he was squirming in his seat and had to scratch it like crazy. he said it happened two days in a row, but not all day. I wouldn't have thought anything, except I remembered that you reported this too? I don't see any rash or redness. Faith
momtocole1 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 Hi Faith, He has not been complaining about itching at all except one time last night where he said his feet were itchy. No rash or anything like that. Poor thing had to have 3 teeth pulled this morning and he is really having tough time. Have you though about trying a benadryl? I usually can't give it to my son because it dries him all out and he starts that scratchy dry cough stuff that almost becomes a tic. Other kids do fine on benadryl. I hope he feels better. Poor hiney! Thanks, Judy... Judy,Is your son still itching? are you still using the high dose?
