Is Augmentin in the category of amoxycilin? I was under the imression, but could be wrong that Augmentin is amoxy with an added ingredient, tho don't remember what.

I had a sneaky plan to go to the ped today and ask/beg for augmentin and experiment. :)

Anyone?

Yes, Augmentin is just amoxicillin with potassium clavulanate added to it.

The potassium clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, that is combined with penicillin group antibiotics to overcome certain types of antibiotic resistance.

So is Augmentin not a good choice for someone like my son who shows no symptoms? or is this better than plain amoxy? ... or should I ask for something else if I get the chance? This is the one that was used for 'Sammy', but I guess at a higher dose?

thanks,

Faith... If your son has had amoxicillin in past and there wasn't any improvement I would try azithromycin. It took about 30 days to start seeing 'MARKED' improvement for us.

Wendy,

thanks, .. did you try others before going to azith? the amoxy seemed to work the one time, so the next time I asked for a trial of it (this is going back about 2 years now), he was going to prescribe Augmentin, but I asked for the amoxy since in seemed to help the other time. but then it didn't seem to this second time. so I didn't persue it. If I ask to try azith, he may so no.

I was under impression that Azith was one that was hard to be prescribed because if the strain got immune to that one, then there would be nothing stronger? I may be all wet, but I recall these dicusssions going on. What's the latest word?

Others many chime in but our son has a reaction to Amoxicillin so Azithromycin has always been prescribed and its working. Our son's friend who is also PANDAS and had Scarlet Fever when my son got sick has been through numerous different antibiotics and nothing seemed to help eradicate his swollen gland but I don't think they've tried azithromycin... they pulled his adenoids instead.

It may just be for "longterm" usage that they don't want to presscribe it for. but I think it was a hard one to get, many docs would not prescribe it unless last resort.
