ilovedogs
Grif has been suffering from an increase in his eye tic for the past week or so. It makes his eyes tear up and he says his eyes are just really tired at the end of the day. I've tried natural eye drops and Claritin eye drops and he doesn't get any relief. I'm not sure that any supplements have ever really helped him but I will be increasing his magnesium for now. Any suggestions? I know some of you have kids who have blinking/eye tics. Thanks, Bonnie
jennmomofthree
Hi there, I have a six year old son. We have been through various tics but in the last three weeks have seen a dramatic increase in his eye blinking tics. I couldn't figure out what was going on. I tried some diet modification and saw no change. Then it dawned on me that he had gotten a new DS video game about the same time period. He hadn't played his DS much all summer but in the last three weeks was playing at least once a day. Yesterday I decided to remove the DS for an entire day and see what happened. Low and behold the tics have been much less severe today. Don't know if this might be the case for your child but I was stunned! We had never noticed any correlation between his tics and tv or video games. Hope you find what the trigger is! Hang in there!
ilovedogs
Thanks! He doesn't play video games much and hasn't touched his DS in months. I remember doing this in the beginning when the tics started and I 'thought' I saw the tics decrease, only to have them come back anyway and I was scratching my head thinking: now what could it be? LOL! This kid keeps me on my toes!
laurena82
I I love dogs, See my reply to AHB re: eye rolling. As I mentioned, ALLERGIES that caused eye irritation were the ONLY time my son had problems with eye-related tics....and, of interest, the end of summer (read: now !) is a common time for environmental allergies that cause people eye related allergy symptoms....and another mom on here mentioned eye tics just the last few weeks... Therefore, I'd think that ANYTHING you can do to decrease allergies that affect your child's eyes would help REDUCE the eye blinking/tics etc in the future. My son went through all of this ? 15 years ago....and I was hesitant to go through "traditional" allergy testing/desensitization shots .....but eventually did....and I think it was a very good thing to do. IN RETROSPECT....I would do that sooner, rather than later, if I were to live through it all again. (((((((((hugs)))))))))) and best wishes! It is so painful to see your child go throught these things.....
ilovedogs
Thank you for your reply! His very first tic was eye winking and has been around every single day for the last 2 years. There is never a day that I don't see his eye blinking or winking. Some days/weeks are just more intense like right now. I did buy the Claritin allergy eye drops and maybe I'll give those a try this week to see if it helps. It wouldn't be so bad except that he's squeezing his eyes shut for about a second and a half each time so that really interferes with school work and concentration! Can I just say, Laurena, that it's wonderful that you have come on to share your experiences even though it was many years ago. It does give us hope. I will probably put a call in to our naturopath and ask if he has any insight if this continues to bug him. Also, he tics more when he has something going on with his teeth and I see a tooth erupting right now so that may have something to do with it! ilovedogs
Well, I spoke with his naturopathic doctor and he wants me to increase the PS100(phosphadytlserene) to 200 mg a day and to increase his B6 to 200 mg a day for 3 days. So, I'll be starting this regimen today and we'll see how it goes. His tics always seem to get worse as the day progresses when he is having a waxing period. The poor kid can barely see by the end of the night b/c he's squeezing his eyes shut constantly!
Chemar
Bonnie sorry if you already posted this but has he seen an eye doctor?
ilovedogs
Bonniesorry if you already posted this but has he seen an eye doctor? I took him for an eye exam about 6 months after the tics started, so that would have been about 16 months ago and they didn't see any problems with his eyes. Should I consider getting him tested again? Vision problems are not a hereditary issue on either side of our families so after I got him tested I figured we were in the clear for eye problems. Chemar
that's good that he has been evaluated for eye probs....a good eye doc may also be able to determine if there are signs of allergic reaction in the eyes altho getting glasses didnt take my son's eye rolling/blinking away, it did help a lot! He does have non hereditary myopia and astigmatizm
melanie
Someone probably told you to try magnesium that worked like a charm for eye tics.
ilovedogs
Someone probably told you to try magnesium that worked like a charm for eye tics. Yes, thanks! I've increased his magnesium this week as well. The poor kid keeps looking at me like: Hey, why do I have to keep taking all this extra stuff? It honestly doesn't bother him until later in the evening when his get tired and he gets a headache from moving and pulling those facial muscles so much. I've never really seen a benefit from magnesium before but it couldn't hurt since I'm sure most of America is lacking in this vital mineral. We all take a cal/mag supplement in this house! guy123
My eye blinking tic started while I was getting allergy shots. Anyway, 0.025mg of Clonidine nightly (that's 1/4 of a 0.1mg pill) has been helpful for my blinking tic. I haven't noticed anything else other than eating fish seems to make it worse. Good luck.
