Hi Melanie

didnt want you to think you were being ignored....it is real hard for me (and I know many of our other members too) to comment when tic meds are involved as many of us stay as far away from them as possible from bitter experience

all I can share with you is that L-carnitine greatly helped my son when he had a big problem with his vocal tics.

however I dont know if it can be taken with those drugs and so you would need to check with your doctor on that

I hope things will settle as I can read in your post that you are very frustrated. Sometimes the "short fuse" issue in our kids is due to a lack of serotonin. the B vitamin INOSITOL is what my son takes for that, along with P-5-P version of B6 and also methylB12

Thanks Im not a fan of medications either I am just at the end of my rope I wish I could just go the natural way but we are so desperate for some relief This kid is so full of anxiety as soon as a situation gets any bit of anxiety his tics come out and they are Fs and Bs and whatever else he can slam at you

Melanie,

I see that you say your son has verbal tics? May I ask if he has any other vocal sounds? Does he have any motor tics? Also, when you say he says the bad words, does he say them repeatedly, out of the blue, or he just hurls out the insult to you in frustration and anger? Is he aware that he is doing it? Does he say he can't help it? Forgive me for asking, I am curious if he just uses these words out of frustration and it is just when he gets anygry? How old is he did you say?

Thanks

Faith

Hi Melanie

we were desperate too and that was why we started the meds initially. But when the results with meds are not making things better and in fact often bringing new problems via side effects.....well that was when we decided to try something else and are very thankful we did

re the bad words, that may well be coprolalia tics

have you tried epsom salts baths to calm him? any magnesium at all? usually giving magnesium with meds is ok but again check with your doc first

He grunts when hes angry too. His motor tics are the middle finger(figures)He knows hes doing it sometimes he says hes sorry. I know some times the curses are not tics and I can pretty much tell which are which they all seem to pop up when hes either frustrated or he "cant get his words out" he gets stuck alot Dr says its OCD always full of other stuff in his head Im not so sure but hey they are DRs some of thee tics are B B B some are hurled insults he calls the tutor bad names I feel bad shes trying her best he isnt happy doing anything except researching ww11 on his computer He will be 15 in April hes always had some issues but nothing like this its been over 1 year were at the end thats why I ask about the meds so much I have him on buspar and tenex hes also on zithromax from his dan dr we have tried other meds I know theres no magic bullet I would just like the anger and cursing to stop Thanks Faith Melanie

melanie,

I think I understand, I just wondered if you thought because he swears that they were tics, but it could just be him being defiant. Is this the first time you are using medications for him, or has he taken these from a younger age, how long has been taking these meds?

Have you ever tried any of the supplements or dietary restrictions that we talk about here? If he did not have other issues, would you say his tics were still a problem? are you saying he just started tics this past year, or has he had them from younger? Forgive me, I am not clear on if it is the tics that he has that is the main issue, or is it his other issues? I wonder if the medications could be causing some of these behaviors? Again, forgive me, but I find it unusual that someone could have using the middle finger and swear words as tics (if i am understanding correctly), as they are the more unusual tics and less than 1% of people with tourettes present with this. Do you think he does this as an excuse because he knows he has tics and can get away with it?

Hi Melanie,

I am sorry I missed this post. I was wondering how your appointment went with Dr. Chiriboga. So sorry it did not go as well as you hoped. The people I know of that have gone to her have a strep component to their tics. That is not to say that she is not fully qualified in other aspects of tic disorders, but I can only speak for my experience. By the time we went to her, we already knew that my son had extremely high titers and had responded positively to antibiotic treatment.

You might want to try eliminating artificial ingredients and preservatives if you have not already done so. Many people find it helpful. If one doctor is not giving you the help you need, keep looking. You know your child better than anyone. Keep reading here. The people here are so supportive. We have had our share of ups and downs with this and I have found this website a tremendous source of comfort and help.

Hi Melanie,

sorry you are having so many problems-- I am dealing with motor tics as well--I am new to the site but have gotten so very good advice from people. I will keep you and your son in my prayers and hope things get better for you soon.
