sojmed Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 I'm looking at this forum and seeing how many people are using diet changes similar to the diets we use. Over the last 10 years we have found that artificial dyes, aspartame, glutamates, wheat, dairy, eggs, corn, and specific colored fruits and vegetables are the main problems in our lives and have been using this as the basis for helping others, mostly diagnosed autists, but also Tourettes, ADD etc. I can say that I have some aspects of Asperger Syndrome and Tourettes at times. Most of the problems I had all my life were alleviated with diet changes. My wife developed the diet called Sara's Diet for her adopted daughter who was epileptic and autistic. we have been able to help people with conditions such as ADHD, chronic fatigue and chemical sensitivities. It is similar to Feingold/Failsafe diets, but we believe it is the lutein, not salicylates, in fruit and veg that is the problem, based on the foods that cause us to have regressions. Lutein is in fruits such as oranges and veg such as spinach. Both corn and eggs contain lutein, but it is the egg yolk and only yellow corn - egg white and white corn are not a problem. This is why so many kids won't eat their veggies! So we teach them which vegetables and fruit they can eat, and slowly build up a diet that is non-allergenic and calming. we believe in all natural diet, a clean chemical-free environment and natural healing methods.
ilovedogs Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Hi there, do you have a website with Sarahs' diet recommended? I'd love to check it out. Interesting what you said about the lutein instead of the salicylates b/c I've been debating this for a while. I've been thinking of doing Feingold but I have a hard time removing fruits and veggies b/c I think they are very important for digestion and for antioxidants. Does anyone know if you take a veggie or fruit supplement if that would still create the same problems? Like the Juice Plus products or the Alive supplements which contain whole foods. If I remove fruits/vegs from ds's diet, then I'd like to have something to replace the nutrition with. Thanks, Bonnie
P_Mom Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Don't be afraid of The Feingold Diet.......it worked great for my younger son, and, it is easy to follow once you get a hang of it....on stage one, there are only a handful of fruits and vegetables that are restricted... stage two, you begin to introduce them ALL back one at a time to find any culprits...so, your son can still enjoy and get benefits from the many fruits and veggies that are allowed from the beginning. Once you are through the beginning process, you may only find that one, or a few, are a problem. With us, only two veggies, and about three fruits have to be avoided.
Chemar Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 we have been following the principle outlined in The Maker's Diet book by Jordan Rubin the only foods my son has had to eliminate for his tics are the artificial additives and processed or preserved foods...he can eat all other natural organic whole foods...all fruit, veg, grains and dairy without any negative impact on his tics or OCD

Thanks, Bonnie Our website is http://www.saras-autism-diet.freeservers.com Yes, fruit and veg are important. They not only contain vitamins, minerals, but also enzymes essential for digestion. What causes a problem varies from person to person, which is why rotation diets often help to find what are the problems. Personally I can eat blueberries and cranberries, but not strawberries, which tells me that my problem is not with salicylates. I also peel everything and avoid all additives esp. artificial colors, MSG and nutrasweet.
airbucket Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 I just wanted to add, WHY would our bodies be intolerant/reactive to something natural? that to me indicates maybe an underlying immune disorder or some other system. ? I have never tried eliminating certain fruits or veggies because i cant understand how something from nature would in and of itself hurt our bodies. I would love to understand this phenomenon more. we have been following the principle outlined in The Maker's Diet book by Jordan Rubin the only foods my son has had to eliminate for his tics are the artificial additives and processed or preserved foods...he can eat all other natural organic whole foods...all fruit, veg, grains and dairy without any negative impact on his tics or OCD
patty Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 Airbucket, We are all biochemically different or in the eastern term, we are constitutionally different. Even something organic & healthy, like fruit or vegetable may not be good for everyone. With this being said, the same goes for supplements, it explains why some find success in some supplements while some have adverse effects. That is why i strongly believe that doing allergy desensitization is crucial in balancing one's nervous system, so one can assimiliate the nutrients and minerals we get from food or supplements. Pat
