DKRESmith =...your reply

Recommended Posts

This is the post I replied to DKRESmith.

I thought I would start it as a new topic to see if anyone had any comments or simialr experiences (outcomes) after neuro visit.

She went in August of last year. Another time after that and we are due back in May.

Any comments wold be great. I never really posted the outcome of her neuro visit for I was not aware of these boards at the time.

here is is:

Injury to the white matter of the brain, that is what her MRI showed. I was told from our neuro that this is common in pre-majure infants or problem deliveries.

Its called an injury but it is actually from lack of blood flow to the brain usually during delivery.

This injury causes problems with the eyes. In my daughters case the brain has re-wired itself around the injury so it has not effected her at all. (perfect vision)

This is all exact quotes from Dr.Davis our neuro. He said he also had a another neuro view the films and he also agreed as to the injury being old (meaning probably from delivery or head injury)

She was not pre-mature, she would not come out though, my pelvic bone was about to snap....I was sent for c-section. As far as I knew there were no problems and everything went smmothly. I did though feel he waited TOO long to get her out via c-section.

And unless a nurse dropped her on her head....she has never hit her head really bad. Not recently nor as an infant.

Never was left with a sitter either.

It was always left uneasy and unclear with me. He continually said to my husband and myself that it had nothing to do with her condition (tics) or a habit as he calls it. And that the injury showing in the white matter would never cause any issues in the future.

The scan was ordered with the dye but my daughter refused any type of needle. They went ahead anyhow and did it without the dye or sedation. Always wondered if they missed something but I guess they would know....

We see him again in May, its always come back in 6 months....!

One last thing...the first thing he ordered was a EEG, it was a short 20 minute one. I had to keep her up most of the night so she would fall alseep. That came back abnormal. A 24 hour one was ordered after that, we spent the night there. This one was normal according to him. WEIRD.... I just don't know anymore, I really just do not.

Have a great night...

Interesting....I did not read the other post.....but something struck me here. My delivery "seemed normal" to me, but there was one issue. My son't heart rate went WAY down! It was less than half of what it had been during labor. They had to do an internal heart beat monitor. My blood pressure went way down too. I remember the look on my doctor's and husbands face as the YOUNG cocky anesthesiologist (?) said that I was stablizing...and the doctor disagreed....they prepped me for a C section and then rolled me over one last time hoping things would return to normal and with a quick prayer from me they did. It was a few minutes of time.

It was scarey and everyone in the room looked so worried....I had been overdrugged during the epildural so I was in a daze (he shot me 2 1/2 times and then make some dumb comment....I was numb from my belly up and then he had to hit me again!!!) Later my blood pressure dropped and his heart rate dropped. Don't have a clue if it is related???????

They left my oldest son in the birth canel waaaay to long too. I pushed for hours. I had a nurse midwife. My mom finally said that someone should get a Dr. Our families were waiting outside of the room, my sister and husband were with me, well sorta. They had to put my husband in a chair and sit him in the closet in the room. He almost passed out after just watching me push for 6 hours. Dr. came in and said, well this one is looking straight out at us (positioned wrong) Baby was finally delivered with forceps. bruise on his shoulder and forcep marks on one cheek.

Youngest was straight up and down the whole time I carried him. They kept saying he was in the V position. I told them if he was head down then he had feet on his head because he was kicking and it wasn't where you would expect to feel kicks. They did an ultra sound, and said "guess your right."

They had me go in a few weeks before I was due to try to turn him. They gave me a shot that made my heart pound and pushed on my stomach to try to push him around to the head down position. Didn't work. They did a C section at due date and said the cord was looped under his but and wrapped around an ankle. That's why they were unable to turn him. I would never recommend someone letting them try to turn a baby like that now.

If it were just one or the other son, you bet I would have to wonder if one of these events were involved. I wouldn't be able to help it.

What I do think may have contributed to symptoms, oldest son spent so much time in the birth canal, I'm sure he had totally different gut flora than youngest son who was born C section. Youngest son had Hep B birth dose and flailed his head all over with his mouth open, oldest had jaundace and didn't get birth dose.

Youngest has the eating issue, oldest doesn't.

My firstborn took me thru 3 days of VERY hard labor  . It was an easy pregnancy(no nausea etc at all) but a very very hard birth. Docs said he was in danger and were pushing for a C-section. Eventually I agreed to an epidural which only took on one side :) but thankfully he arrived shortly thereafter. Healthy overall and has remained that way. He was as contented a baby as you could ever inagine. I was 34 when he was born

Three years later, youngest was a very hard pregnancy......nauseaous me all day every day. He was overdue and so I was eventually, and reluctantly, induced and he arrived within an hour. very easily.

He had infantile rash, concave chest and "floppy larynx" (made clucking noises...I still wonder if he was born with vocal tic........ :) ) He was a very restless baby and cried a lot.

I had a miscarriage the year before he was born.

He has had health issues all his life.

Shortly after his dx with TS and when things were really at their lowest point for him, I would spend agonizing hours going thru everything to try to find out why.

The reasons I think are many and varied. No one thing has contributed to my son's condition. He was born with genes that made him susceptible and a bunch of things probably worked together to cause his manifestation of the TS and other neuro issues he has, and likely also led to the eventual development of the Crohn's

Cheri,

If there is one thing I can say with clarity after bumbling through growth facters, cell to cell communication, words I recognize, but can't pronounce. They are getting close. I really really believe that. Technology has advanced to the point where there will be new info soon.

It's sad to say, but with the explosion in autism, there is a lot of motivation.

I sure hope you are right Kim. There are so many things that seem to be so clear in the tics and autism that it seems outrageous that they aren't coming up with something. Yet, it is clearly related to the immune system and they are still requiring vaccinations that often sends these kids over the edge. I am hoping that something comes out soon and in time to help children that need help now.

I was reading each reply, and Tracy's story was familiar with mine with my son. Normal pregnancy, thought a normal labor/birth, but his heart rate lowered to the 50's about an hour after my epidural. The nurse came in and put an internal monitor on his scalp, and oxygen on me. They also gave me, I think Turbutiline, to slow my contractions? His heart rate came back up ,but I had to wear the O2 until he was born. He was fine after being delivered. No assistive devices, no problems breathing, and his Apgar score was normal. Has always been healthy except for the first year of life, he had mutiple ear infections. Guess it could be related???

I found your post interesting. I went through a c-section after 27 hours of labor with my son (They kept me in the hospital at the 8 hour mark because of heart rate drops) and I have often wondered if that had something to do with his Tourette's. Just wanted to share...
