I pulled up this old post to add more info.

After reviewing the link I posted here month's ago, I realize that the photosensitive epilepsy study it showed actually discussed not only the flicker from 50/60 hz TV's, but also other triggers, such as patterns. They talk about certain images being triggers, even on non-flicker screens. It really does provide a clearer understanding of the underlying trigger.

Hi all,

I just spoke with Helen Irlen again. She said one clinic studied people with Aspergers/ASD and about 70% had photoscopic sensitivity. They only studied the adults who could communicate well. I told her that my doctors sees tics on the ASD. To me this gives a lot of credibility to the correlation of light sensitivitiy and tics.

She also said that yes mercury creates light sensitivity. They have monitored some people going through mercury detox and oddly enough, the frequence they are sensitive to shifts during detox.

Finally, she strongly recommended ALPHASMART for school. It is under $300 and interacts with a PC (download, upload, printing), yet can function independently. It is a full size keyboard with a small display on it. It is also lighter than a laptop.

Best of all, she said a large number of her patients responded well to this. She said that Irlen syndrome folks commonly have problems with CRT monitors, and that LCD monitors don't completely solve the problem. The Alphasmarts however have been great for them.

She thought that after my son finished detox I should go to So. Calif and have them test him thoroughly at their clinic.

Hi Claire

I have posted in the past about the benefits of the Alphasmart .

My son has used one that we purchased for him for the last 4 years and has benefitted from it enormously. It is great for note taking, especially as many kids with TS etc have handwriting difficulties. Also, because it has a built in organizer, it is excellent for keeping a calendar of assignments etc. It interfaces directly with the computer, so the child comes home from school and downloads notes to the home computer, which can then be printed out or saved etc.

Alphasmart has a range of Applets for various upgrades and specific tasks etc, and so one can customize them too.

The machine itself is lightweight and has a well padded carry case.

The public school system provides them free of charge for kids who have 504 plans or IEPs etc.

Hi Chemar,

No WONDER the name AlphaSmart rang a bell. I kept trying to figure out where I had heard of it--I remember your comments now. It was reassuring to hear her comments on it--she says the gray background makes a difference. Even so, her patients have more issues with color and contrast, and my son with flicker, so I will still need to check it out for sure.

I wonder if you need approval for a non-504/IEP child to use it to take notes. Now that he is out of elementary school, he might like it.

I had checked the site. For general work on word processing and upload/download to the computer and/or printing, do I need the aplets? I saw them and am not sure what they are needed for.

Claire

the aplets are more for specific tasking etc.

the basic machine comes with everything you need including the remote and cables to interface with the computer.

You would have to check with your school re the use in class without an LD plan.

Our edupsychiatrist has in my son's requirements for modifications in the classroom that he will benefit from an alphasmart so he has always been allowed to use it.

I took these private psych-ed reports when we started him at public school in January and they immediately gave him another alphasmart which we declined because we have our own.

We were told it is now a standard issue(at least here) for all kids with LDs documented.

Very interesting stuff. My son has TS and OCD. He is home schooled and spends much time on the computer and playing video games and they don't seem to have any adverse affects on him. Although when he goes to a movie theater it aggravates him terribly... and this is before the screen or movie starts up.

Movie theaters are cleaned regularly with strong cleaning chemicals and sprayed regularly with pesticides. When my son was small he would have undiagnosed seizures every time we had the house sprayed for bugs. Schools in Florida have carpeted classrooms that are also sprayed regularly with pesticides and cleaned with harsh chemicals. Is it any wonder kids have a hard time concentrating?
