Hi

Can anyone here tell me if they are using seroquel and what dosage. My son was put on it July 28 at 12.5 mg. And was raised to 25mg 2 weeks ago. Over the past week his tics have gotten so bad he is getting upset and thinking the seroquel isn't helping. We spent the month of June and July tappering down from 3 year on Orap. His doctor wanted to start out slow with the seroquel and work up to a acceptable dosage. We take this 25mg at bedtime and upon rising his tics are not bad but as the day goes on they start and are so unreal by bedtime he is wore out. Right not he has sever head nodding and all kinds of vocal ticing. He is have finger ticing and breathing tics also. I have read that this small of dosage won't help. Is this true or not. We haven't seen any side-effects at this dosage.

Anyone with any info please respond. I have read all over the net on the web site that have seroquel.

Thanks

bumping this one up for maybe a responce.

We go back to the doc on Friday and he will probably increase the seroquel once again. Like I said before the ticing is really bad.

Hi Karen

I have seen your post here and on BrainTalk and so hoped you would get the answers you are seeking.

I have no experience with seroquel, except to know it is used for schizophrenia?? so i am quite puzzled at it's use for TS....but as i said I really am ignorant about it.

I can only go by our experience to say that if you believe a med is negatively affecting your child.......it probably is. Mothers are so fine tuned to their kids that we notice things so much more acutely.

For my own child, i saw meds only make life worse for him

For many i know they have made life better.

It is a very fine line isnt it........but........if soemthing is not helping, and things seem to be going downhill.....perhaps, rather than just increasing the dose, it may be time to try another approach!!

There is an excellent book by Dr Peter Breggin MD called "Your Drug May Be Your Problem" that may provide the answers you seek

The Breggin website is http://www.breggin.com and the book info is on the site at

http://www.breggin.com/yourdrug.html

I got the book thru Boarders Books

my son was on seroquel for allmost a year its basically not a med for tourette syndrome it is a anti psychotic medication used on people or children with psychiatric disorders. if you are going to medicate they need to add clonodine or something of that nature to help with the tics.clonodine along with seroquel will stop the tics in thier tracks but im warning you. my son developed terrible hives from the medication and had to be taken off. he had to have shots on a daily basis to get rid of the full body hives that covered his entire body. he looked like he had the measles he couldnt breathe and it was scarry. my advice to you is not to medicate look to other sources to help with his tics..let him or her be themselves..apriella

Hi

Sorry for the long wait in responded. We too have found out the seroquel isn't for tourettes. We kept going and raising the dosage until we were at 75mg. we took 25mgs X 3. Upon going to this dosage we were almost ER bound on the first day of this. By my son's 3rd dosage he was almost lifeless, zombied out and not very alert. He complained of dizzness, upset stomach and his arm and legs wouldn't move right. He couldn't walk without holding on to walls. We took his blood pressure and it was only 70/45 his pulse was 45. SCARY!!!!!!! When we called the ER they said he had a sudden drop in pressure to keep him up and moving and not let him go back to sleep. Well finally in a few hours the dizzness went away and he got a little more back to normal. But it was way into the early morning before his blood pressure would stablize to a safe reading for me to even let him lay down to rest. Well since then we are almost tappered off the seroquel we are now at only 1/4 of a pill we started at 25mgs for 1 week then went to 12.5mg for 1 week and now at what would be about 5.5mg for 1 week and as of today we are down to powder........ My son who will be 11 in November has decided to go meds free and tic and tic anc tic....... He don't want to feel that way agin he said. He is very heard strong and willing to handle the ticing.

God Bless

My son is taking serequol now forl Tourettes and its working for him. It is a antipaychotic med. but the antipsychotic meds are often used for Tourettes. My son has a very severe case of TS. If your son does not have a severe case of TS then you might could try something like clonidine or Tenax. But anyhow serequol is used for TS. It does not say it is used when you read about it but doct;s often use it :)

Hello

Yes my son's ts tends to be quite bad from time to time. We have tried the tenex, clonidine, orap, and seroquel. THe only one we had success with was the orap and we used it for a little over 2 years. But with weigh gain was getting out of control. The clonidine and tenex caused to much sedation. And as you read the seroquel was extreme low blood pressure. So he is so scared and tired of the side-effect he don't want anything. Right now his ticing is really bad...... I really hope it will slow down again. He will take spells for many weeks and he is barely noticeable then boom!!!!!!!!! TIC TIC TIC from eyes, to stomach, to head, to neck, to face to nose etc........ Right now he is have really bad eye ticing with the rolling and blinking, vocal ticing with a cough and a clear and the nose tic like something is in there but won't come out..... He said he will manage it without meds from now on out. I only hope he can. He is doing so much better without anything. His moods was getting so bad we couldn't stand much more. He is no longer angery nor moody like before. He is happy and joking and laughing like the little boy I remember before all the meds. Don't get me wrong they helped the ticing but the side-effects we kept seeing wasn't worth it for us. I now see my son I lost about 3 years ago when we started the looking for the right medicine to help the ticing. If he decides to try meds again someday I won't say no but it won't be me pushing him.

God Bless

Hi Sheila

At one time I thought Gavin my be pandas due to his ticing relating to illness but he still tics sometimes when he is not sick. But unless he is really bad sick his tics are usually very little. During bad allergy eposides his ticing will go full force or it he is sick with something his tics are really bad. His doctor said they didn't think he was pandas even though his first ticing that really got scary was when he had strep at the age of 5. This was when we first knew he indeed had TS. Or should I say I knew. He is having a bad time with allergys right now so his tics are kinda bad. Not like they were before we started allergy shots twice weekly. He is doing much better......

Thanks

Karen--I'm glad Gavin is doing better! Did you just recently start the allergy shots? What type of shots are they, if you don't mind my asking. Sheila

Sheila

Gavin started his shots last June. He is allergic to 25 different things from mold to trees to dust to grass to dog to cats etc...... He isn't allergic to any foods thank goodness. He takes 2 different shots they are what he was tested allergic to when we allergy tested. He also uses nasalcrom and allerga. Even with the shots he still has allergies but not as bad. He isn't sick near as much as he use to be. It took about 5 months for him to get use to the shots. He stayed congested for about 4 1/2 months once we started them. With each seasonal change he has bad eposides with allergies and ticing. He does ticing other times but a lot of things will cause them to be more sever. Such as illness, angry, being tired, change in weather, air freshners will tear him up, he will start with a sniffing tic non stop when we are around any air fresheners that is strong. But as I said he told me and the doctor no more meds for me!!!!!!!!!!! We went on Friday for a vist with his doctor and he talke to us a long time and when we left he patted Gavin on the pack and told him to hang tight he was one strong boy and he loved and admired him VERY MUCH. The made my son so happy and so more determined not to let his ticing get the best of him.

Hello. I weigh about 110 soaking wet and am about 5'6. I took 200 mgs. of seroquel every night as a sleep aid coming off a 6 month recovery from alcoholism. I have been alcohol free for about 7 months now. I have found out that I am 2 months pregnant and have to stop taking the seroquel. I cant sleep at night and I am tired all day. I am miserable. Is there any way that I can taper off this a little more gradually without having such severe withdrawl? I know that there has never been a human study from pregnant women on thisa medication, only in lab rats so I know that in high doses it can cause neural tube defects in their unborn. I, of course, dont wish to harm my baby. I am afriad that if I dont taper off, Im gonna go nuts from sleep deprevation. I cant sleepduring the day due to my other small children so Im at a loss. Any help would be much appriciated. Thanks

Dear Wendy

I dont know about the seroquel as i have no experience with it, but just wanted to say Hi and hope things get a whole lot better for you.

It is hard to cope when you arent sleeping properly.

Have you spoken to your doctor about this?

there are lots of natural sleep aids, some of which also help with alcohol withdrawal. but I am not sure about their use in pregnancy.

I know some people say that warm milk before bed is helpful.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge on this will be along soon

In the meantime I just wanted to encourage you as i can sense you are feeling kinda lousy.

I do hope and pray things will settle down and that all will be well for you and your new baby.

Stay in touch here and let us know how you are doing :)

Hi,

My name is Debbie Normand and I have a 13 year old son with tourettes. We are experimenting with seroquel. We went to a conference about tourettes and were told by a specialist that it takes fairly high dosages to affect the tourettes. In more severe tourettes, like my son, the tics can be quite stubborn. My son's are.

We were at 200mg a day for quite a while but now we're working our way up to 600 mg a day due to a resurgence of the tics. We take the increases slow since increasing it too quick makes Sam very sedated. His body needs to get used to it before we go up again.

Hope this helps. Of course LISTEN only to your doctor. We're not doctors on this chat thing and every case of tourettes is just a little different from the other and every body is different than the other.

This is the first time I've been to this site and I must say I'm very interested and highly impressed with all that you folks do for your children. My son is 23 now and has had TS since he was 7. We've been through the meds for 14 years. Currently he's on Haldol for tics and Zoloft for depression, but I think now it's ineffective. We have a doctor's apt. today and after reading all of this, I think weaning from the Haldol and Zoloft may be a better way. At this stage Bill doesn't care about anything, has no emotion about anything and basically feel worthless. He's tired and just flat doesn't care about anything. I'm excited to try a new avenue. The haldol produces side effects of increased facial tics and it's getting bad now. He's been on it for four years and I just want my son back the way he was. He's willing to try anything now just to enjoy life and actually be happy about something. So, thank you all for just being out there and communicating. I wish this was available 14 years ago, those were some tough years! Yes, it's tough and it's hard to watch your children go through so much and there nothing you can do but love them. Hang in there!

Linda
