Hi all,

I started my son on Peter Gillham's Kid's Calm this week and would eventually like to add calcium to balance the magnesium.

Does anyone know if Calcium Gluconate is a good source of calcium? I did a bit of digging and it seems to me that Calcium Gluconate is the same as Calcium Citrate, is this right? ^_^

Peter Gillham's Natural Vitality, CalMag is a 2:1 ratio, a proprietary blend of calcium gluconate & magnesium citrate. I am interested in getting this for my son since it is not a pill. Anyone who have tried it? Good results? Any feedback is appreciated.

I have the same question. We have our son on Kids Calm as well, was curious as to if he needs extra calcium and what type I would give him. What would be a sign that would tell me he needed calcium?

Someone correct me if i am wrong, but this is how i understand it.

Calcium is an essential mineral for the magnesium to assimilate into the body, preferrably 2:1 ratio. However, i have been talking to someone at the healthfood store and he said according to the latest research, 1:1 is a better ratio. Now that is another thread.

Anyways, in general, most people with tics/TS tend to be deficient in magnesium. And magnesium can be taken alone w/o calcium, but not vice versa because when someone is deficient in magnesium, the extra calcium will further deplete the magnesium in one's body. Therefore, it is important to take the 2 together for optimal result.

Imcqill,

Since your child is also on Natural Calm, do you notice any difference? How much are you giving him and for how long?

Can you also tell me your child's age, height & weight? I am trying to figure out how much magnesium i should give my son. In the meantime, i am looking for loose stool.

Thx!

Our son is about 50lbs and tall. Not sure his exact height, but he is slight. He has been on the Calm since the middle of December 06. I am sure it has helped, he had loose stools at first, now he takes about 1.5 tsp at night and still seems to be fine. I am just trying to make a decision on the Calcium now, he is doing very good with our current setup, I don't have him on a calcium supp. and didn't want to jinx anything! I am just a little concerned about the long term effects of not making sure he is on a proper ratio.

Imcgill,

Thx for the info. My son is also about 50 lbs, so far we are up to 1/2 tsp daily. I split it up because your body will excrete what is not needed, just like vitC.

I do feel that it is essential to add calcium w/magnesium for optimal assimulation. I know what you mean about if something is working, why mess with it. The good thing is, it is ok to take magnesium alone w/o calcium but not vice versa.

My chirop adviced me that it takes the body about 1 mos. to make up for the mineral deficiency. Once it is in line, you can stop the supplement. I am always concern about the long term effect of taking supplements because the body may incline to stop producing it and start to rely on external source.

Just my thought on the subject.
