Guest Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Hi Everyone, My doctor has wanted me to try 5HTP for the past year now based on test results. I'm a bit nervous about trying it based on my results of meds like Paxil, etc. as a child. Paxil, etc. had bad mood effects on me as a child. I've never done a poll before, so I don't know if I did it correctly or not, but I'm hoping so. It would really be great if those that have tried 5HTP for their child or themselves(only those that have tics or had tics) would fill out the poll & describe their answers in the message. I'm looking for replies from those with both good and bad results. Thanks, Carolyn
Chemar Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Carolyn I voted a yes for my son who does well on 5HTP with B6 and a no for my husband who has bad reaction to it the side effect my son gets is sleepiness which is good as he takes it in the evening as needed He takes Inositol and methionine daily for serotonin maintenance and the 5HTP only if OCD anxiety depression flare he used to take the 5HTP daily when his OCD was severe 50mg per day seems the right dose for him...any higher and he gets edgy my husband gets edgy and restless sleep on even 50mg
kim Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Carolyn, I probably shouldn't even comment here, because I only gave my 14 year old son, 1 capsule of 5HTP once. He was having the teeth/tongue tic. I bought him every type of teeth guard they make. When he said that it was like he "needed the pain," I decided 5HTP was safer, than swallowing 1/2 a bottle of Anbesol a day. One 100 mg. capsule. The tic was gone, the next day. I'm sure it could have been a coincidence, but???? He didn't have any adverse effects. to the Mom that shared the tip about pain/endorphins and 5HTP.
LisaH Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 I used it with my dd for awhile and while it didn't help the tics it did improve her mood a tad. We stopped using it over the winter when she was in a better state mood wise. Now that spring has sprung her mood/behavior has flopped so I need to try it again. She didn't have any side effects from it.
flower Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Unfortunately it did not work for me. Maybe I did not try it long enough but i did not see any improvement, and I seem to always get itchy skin from it. I've tried it on multiple occasions. I would start taking it for a few days and i would get skin rash so I would stop, and then after a few weeks or a month, I would try again, and the same thing. So i just decided it's probably not for me.
