Cum Passus
Hi All, I have looked and can't fine any reference on this subject. The labs our kids do in science class are they O.K. My son brought home rubber glove and said they had acid on them. He couldn't really tell me much about what they are doing in class so I'm going into a panic mode. Have some of the parents with older children had this concern or am I over reacting? I was hoping you all could help me to bring up any points of concern before I E-mail his teacher. Much gratitude in advance, C.P.
Chemar
Hi CP my son is very reactive to the smell of chemicals and has modified chemistry labs because of this we have a doctors note to enforce this accomodation because TS is classified "other health impaired", schools need to make the necessary accomodations for students diagnosed with TS Most people I have ever spoken with on this subject agree that kids with TS do react to chemistry class with increased ticcing
kim
CP, Both of my boys had to go to a local State Park, and dissect owl poop, in 5th grade. I kept them home that day. I'm just a little skiddish about them inhaling owl poop dust, and playing around with it in general. I think the idea, was to look for skeletal remains, to demonstrate the "food chain." I thought, a better idea, would be, to just read a book I have also worried about the dry erase marker fumes. Hadn't given chemistry class a lot of thought. Thanks for the heads up. Cum Passus
Thanks Chemar, My son doesn't qualify for an I.E.P. because his grades are not effected by the TS. So all I have to do is get his Dr. to write a note stating my wishes for accomodations? I'm sure the school would do this anyway they seem to wan't to help him as much as they can, but friends have told me they will get by with the least amount if they can get away with it. Thank again, I just want to have my guns loaded. C.P. Kim, I understand about the markers, his school supply list had sharpie pens. I think they smell horrible. C.P. Chemar
Hi CP my son is a straight A student despite the TS, ADD and CAPD He doesnt have an I.E.P but has a Plan 504 A 504 deals with far more than just learning disabilities, and has served him really well since we had it implemented back when he was in elementary It even prevents teachers from using those dreadful smelly plug in room "fresheners" or wearing perfume because of his extreme sensitivity to those, and additionally provided the accomodations he needs for things like writing assignments, where the combination of tics and OCD can sometimes result in illegible and untidy script...instead he is allowed to type all assignments, and in the lower grades used the AlphaSmart continuously to take notes etc The chemical sensitivity is documented on his 504 plan and so he gets the accomodations needed re chemistry labs
