Is there any possible link between toddler/young child body odor and PANDAS. Could that type of bacterial colonization also lead to antibodies attacking the brain? My dd (6) has sudden onset OCD symptoms. She has also had strong BO for a little girl since she was about 4. Could there be a connection and, if so, how do we test for that type of bacteria?

I noticed a body odor on my daughter before she began treatment and found it most noticable in her bed clothes in the morning. It wasn't urine (didn't have a true ammonia smell), although she often struggled with night-time enuresis. It wasn't the odor that you associate with adult BO, either. This went on for several years before her pain symptoms became so obvious that we had to seek help.

I don't think hers was directly associated with skin colonization, but rather the inability of her body to handle the toxins produced by her internal bacterial infections. Because of her genetic (or perhaps infection induced) tendancy to under-methylate, her body was unable to detoxify and get rid of the build-up as it should, resulting in an accumulation in her tissues (including the skin) which presented as an odor.

The odor resolved shortly after she began treatment and has not returned.

Ammonia smells or strong orders can be caused by infection. If google ammonia urinary track infections you'll see the immediate correlation. However, there are other infections that will cause the same like yeast.

Heavy metals toxicity can also cause similar smell. Her body in an attempt to detox could sweat out the smell of ammonia.

My son also had body odor when he was in kindergarten. I remember buying him deodorant and thinking it was strange to have to do that at such a young age. It smelled more like adult body odor if I remember correctly. Pandas was not even on our radar at he time so I never put much thought into it. Just wanted to chime in though.

I heard about this before from a friend with a toddler. She was very worried because she said there are a few other things that can cause it including genetic. The doctor said in her case it was a yeast infection and prescribed like nystatin.
