Once again, after a very long time of health, it seems that swimming has brought on another flare. I used to think it was the chlorine, but I actually now think that it is just public pool bugs. Recently, a friend w/ a kiddo w/Strep was told by her Ped. that she likely picked it up from the pool. I am thinking that the whole chlorine killing the bugs thing does not apply to our kiddos...

Maybe if others on here have their own chlorine pool they could chime in and say if their children react to their own pools differently than they do public pools/water parks. We have a salt water pool and my ds does fine. In the salt system pools, the salt is broken down into chloride-chlorine which sanitizes the water. I am not exactly sure how the system does this but apparently it is just as clean and sanitary as the regular chlorine. I don't know if it is just the difference in private vs public pools or salt vs chlorine but an interesting thing to consider. Maybe others will chime in.

Honestly, I think w/all the kiddos in the public pool, using the bathrooms, etc., its germs/Strep. I am highly prone as well and after my son was icky in the nose/chest all weekend, I am now feeling signs of illness as well. It seems that this is common and I generally get what he gets because we are nose to nose every day. Bet if we draw labs (which we will) we will have high Strep titers. Both my son and I can elevate dramatically without any typical Strep symptoms. It generally presents as a nasty head/chest cold. I think I had better go on a prophylaxis asap, as the 30 day run of Augmentin that I took seemed to affect my son very well. I guess I must ba a carrier of sorts. God I am tired! Thanks for listening!

Get some rest, you will need it. It does seem to run in families. It is difficult to stay away from pools and stuff in the summer, but personally I think watermarks are way more nasty than pools. So many more people go to them in one day and with all the people in and out, walking on dirty bathroom floors then getting back on a big slide over and over again. Since all of this pandas stuff I look at everything differently now. It's almost as if I can see the germs everywhere especially handrails, elevator buttons, etc... Etc... Stuff I never would have thought twice about before. I find myself thinking "I wonder if that has ever been cleaned". Paranoid right?

We invest in our own above ground pool since swimming is about the only "sport" our kiddo is allowed due to other conditions. We buy the Intex above ground. This year we bought the 18' that comes with everything you need but the chlorine tabs for 359.00 through Walmart. They usually last 2-3 years before the sun ruins the sides. Maintenance takes some time, but is not too bad.

The chlorine does not seem to cause any issues, but we are currently in a minor flare due to the whole family being sick and super stressed with a short term business we just started.

DS swims on a swim team in a public pool. I've never been able to associate any flares or difficulties w/ the pool. Summer has been (knock on wood) a very good time for him.

I actually know of some people who are helped by the chlorine in their own pools.

Same here...I am not sure if the daily intense swimmimg helps or the daily exposure to Vit D helps reduce tics. But something helps b/c he is totally different during summer swim team. That said we don't see as much affect during winter club swim team so I really think it is the increase in Vit D.

For some with tics..i have heard of flares with chlorine. Not for All. for ds it varies.

obviously trying to live clean, chlorine would be a contrary toxin.

per another friend with lymes that has been treated, they said after using bleach with no gloves..the joints in the hands/wrists, started to hurt that day and then the rest of the joints in the body started to hurt over the next couple of days. took about a week to clear.

this person wonders if this was some sort of herx that some panda kids might experience from swimming in pools???????
