lismom Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 (edited) I know this topic has been brought up before but i hope some can share what they are using with no major symptom increase. Thank you, Kathy Edited January 11, 2012 by lismom
NancyD Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 For many years we tried different probiotics and they all made DD worse (really activated her and we could not seem to push through it). So we kept her on Bifido Factor, which I believe is a prebiotic for babies. Then last year we tried Theralac --after many on the PANDAS forum recommended it -- and DD did really well with it so she's been taking it ever since. Now I take it too.
philamom Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 We seem to have an increase of symptoms when we start any new probiotic. It usually dies down within a week, but there have been a few I gave up on. VSL #3 made my daugher manic. I like Florastor & Culturelle (use them daily) but my favorite is Ther-biotic Detox Support by Klaire Labs.
LNN Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Theralac here too. Initially, we did Theralac 5x/wk and Truflora 2x/wk for yeast. Now, to save a little $ now that their guts are nice and stable, we rotate Theralac 2x, Truflora 2x and Jarrow Sacc B. 3x/wk. That way, they get a variety of pre and probiotics. FWIW - Culturelle never did much for us.
SSS Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 (edited) Yep, I think everyone's particular gut may respond differently- Before we started antibiotics for dd, I was healing her leaky gut and constant yeast overgrowth. Klaire's Ther. Detox formula has a great reputation, and one pill is 50 million, but I swear it doesn't 'stick' too dd's gut. She has never had a c.diff. or clostridia issues, but when I tried sac. B probiotic with her, negative and negative. So don't use that one. Finally (lol) here is what we use, and I need high counts for her: Custom Probiotic 11 strain (it is a powder) VSL! (just started this after being so paranoid about strep strain for years, and she is doing great with it after taking it) It has 125 billion per capsule. I do use Culterelle, because it has such a good reputation against c. diff. It is only 30 million per cap I do really like Theralac, too, and the companion bottle that goes with it. I also use some Kirkman brands of lacto. and Bifo. strains. (by the way, that is Kirkman brand, not the Kirkland brand from Costco.) Edited January 12, 2012 by S & S
sptcmom Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 (edited) We use Custom probiotics and rotate between the six strain and the 11 strain- we use 1 trillion a day for DS and 250 billion for DH and I. Flora synergy by Energetix is good too. Probiotic research suggests the most imp strains for combating Strep, and other bacterial infections are Salivarius, Reuteri and Rhamnosus. Probiotics should be taken with a little milk, banana or cheese- cow, goat, camel, any milk or cheese. These are rich in fructoooligisaccharides which are prebiotics and help the good probiotic strains establish colonies. otherwise the effect and benefit is temporary and even colonizing probiotics become transitional probiotics. We take the powder in juice and then eat the above foods. Huge difference. I finished learning about probiotics last month and for a month now the entire family's gut has been extra phenomenal. Had a two day adjustment period with loose stools not diarhea, just loose but it passed and its been great. So much better detox thru that channel. Edited January 12, 2012 by sptcmom

I also noticed when I gave the 11 strain mixed in a yogurt drink, with a teaspoon of Kirkman's colostrum, we beautifully lined dd's gut (used to do testing on this a lot) But it is transient, right? Doesn't it repopulate itself every 14 days? Not bringing into account antibiotics wiping it out. I don't use colostrum anymore, but started giving her 1 cap of Researched Nutritionals transfer factor multi immune.
JuliaFaith Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 (edited) Per doctor's orders son as been on VSL (no longer requires a prescription - $45) but currently taking Supernatant (Therapeutic Foods). It contains supernatant (not sure what this is) and several probiotics. $51 - 60 capsules - son takes after breakfast/dinner 2 tabs. 2xday. So many to choose from! Son has had stomache aches for 1 1/2 years and they are slowly improving with treatment. Nothing diagnosed so probably lyme and all the rest of his diagnosis's. Edited January 12, 2012 by JuliaFaith
norcalmom Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Just added ultimate flora adult formula - 15 billion, 10 strains, delayed release capsules by "renew life". These were recommended by Whole Foods vitamin person. His tongue was starting to get a little "furry" - so I am increasing the probiotics, and alkaline forming foods/drinks. I give him one of these at night. He also takes Yum-o-dophilus tablets - which are chewable - so I put those in his lunch and he can eat at snack (two hours after his morning antibiotic) and they taste like sweet tarts, so he likes em, and he would never take a pill at school. They don't have nearly the number.
