patty Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 I live in California and just received a letter from our school district letting me know that there is a new CA law (AB354) was approved requiring all students entering into the 7th grade to have proof of a Tdap booster before starting school in the Fall of 2012. Does anyone know if i can get an exemption from this? My pediatrician has talked to me about it on our last office visit and she was not very supportive about me refusing vaccination for my son even she know's about his neurological issues! Thx for your help! Pat

If your child shows immunity on titers then you can ask to be exempt and you have lab work to prove it OR if they are low in just one- you can get separate vaccine for just the one that they may need instead of the combo vaccine. HTH!
Cj60 Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 Hi Pat, We're in PA. I got an exemption for my daughter before she entered kindergarten earlier this year. Her ped. was not cooperative in the slightest; even made my wife sign a waiver. But the school nurse was fine with it. She didn't even ask a single question. Just took the form and said ok. There really is no official form for requestiong the exemption here in PA, but we found something that served the purpose at the website of the environmental medicine practice I take my son to. Chris

dcmom Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Pat- Doesn't California have a philosophical exemption? I am in NJ, and I have been forced to take a religious exemption from vaccinations, even though our doctor wrote a letter stating that my kids should NOT be vaccinated at the current time. Ggrr. Good luck!
socalmom Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 (edited) Wow, I didn't know about this law! I am worried now as Pedi said my son should never have vaccines now that he shows Neurological issues. I live in So Cal, where you can claim philosophical but I think it's hard to claim once you have given your child a vaccine. I suggest a new Pedi who would write a letter and http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/immunize/Documents/imm488e.pdf http://www.nvic.org/Vaccine-Laws/state-vaccine-requirements/california.aspx Edited January 7, 2012 by socalmom

Both my sons were partially vaccinated when I decided no more vaccines. The schools have given me no problem with my using the form on a partially vaccinated child. Also, if a pediatrician and/or neurologist says no vaccines, hopefully they will provide a medical waiver, which all states are supposed to recognize and honor.
kim Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 socalmom, I have never seen this type of exemption letter posted before and I think you'll be glad to see it too. http://www.omsusa.org/Immunization%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf We urgently need more childhood conditions and consideration of family history (autoimmune disorders etc.) to be recoginized as problematic in this area so more parents have access to this type of thing. Mandates that could be devastating to a child need to be CURTAILED.
patty Posted January 12, 2012 Author Report Posted January 12, 2012 socalmom, ifran & kim, thx so much for the links & info. is there a form that i need to fill out for philosophical exemption to submit to the school? pat
kim Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Patty, It looks like the school has the form that you can use but personally, I would not sign it with the language that is included regarding "unimmunized," children. http://vaclib.org/exempt/states/ca/FAQ-CDPH8261.htm Note sentence 2 in the form: "The unimmunized child and the child’s contacts at school and home are at a greater risk of becoming sick with pertussis which can be life-threatening for young infants and can cause prolonged illness at any age." You could use the form and just cross out that language. Or you can hand write or type the language that you do want to include. You can see on the website the stipulation that the form is not a requirement. There are other links there that can help give you more info. socalmom, I had you mixed up with someone who recently posted about her child being diagnosed with OMS. Sorry if I confused you!
