My son has just started doxcycline 400 mg./day. I have read that it is less effective if given with a full meal (snack or small meal OK) or with vitamins. I have been trying to give it this way:

Breakfast at 8:00

Doxy. at 9:00

Vitamins with lunch

Probiotics between lunch and dinner

Vitamins with dinner

Doxy at 9 pm with a snack

Does this sound OK? My question is about the 9:00 doxy. Is it OK that it is being given an hour after breakfast (and often a large breakfast)?

Thank you!

I give my DD10 her first Abx of the day while she is still in bed. By the time she reads for a bit and then up and organized for school, breakfast is about 45 minutes later.

When my daughter was on Minocycline, the llmd said you can give with food even though it states otherwise. There was a thread on here where others mentioned they had to give doxy with food to avoid an upset stomach.

Thank you, I think I will continue on the schedule I have and keep the doxy. with at least some food. It's not worth the stomach upset. That is one thing he has never had trouble with, and I would hate if that started.

I would give with food. My LlmDs advised to take w food. If I took doxy on an empty stomach I'd throw up.

Ditto on the with food- that is what my Dr. told me to do-

I am also on 400 mg a day, and it gave me bad nausea- I read somewhere to take it halfway through a meal-

so if he has trouble, you could also try that.

Chiming in late but my doc said to ignore the food warning and thank goodness! I get sick even when I have it with food but it's worse without.
