mommaonamission Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Happy New Year everyone! Hope all of you and your families had a great Holiday. I know when you're watching what your kids eat left and right going from house to house makes it difficult. Just wanted to let you know that my 12 yr old son has been on the Native Remedy drops for 2 weeks now, and I'm seeing significant improvement. I have him on the Candidate (to help eliminate yeast), the Detox Drops, and the Mindsoothe Jr (to help with his overall mood.) I have also read that the Brightspark (used for ADD) helps with the tics. Tics are down about 90% and have been for a week. He was actually excited about going back to school a "new boy." He has noticed an improvement and is so much happier. I don't think they taste great, but he willingly takes them 3 times a day. I'm a little surprised at the progress since we got some negative test results back. I have to commend our Neuro because he listened to me in December when I told him the bad tics surfaced after strep. He ordered a blood test that day. Results came in a few days ago, and sure enough my son's antibodies are 3 times higher than normal. He ordered several more tests and we are going back today. The strep is still somewhere. I'm confident we are getting to the bottom of this, and I'm more sure than ever, that what you put into your body, as well as what is lingering, controls these things. You are all wonderful people and parents for acknowledging this and working at it, instead of masking it. I thank God everyday I found this forum. Happy New Year! Sarah
mommy11 Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Great news!!! I am so happy to hear of the decrease.
Chemar Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I am so relieved to hear that the treatments you are using work Sarah and also that at least you now have clear answers on the strep. So glad your son can start the new school semester in this positive way! Happy New Year to you too!

Chemar Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 The website for Native Remedies is http://www.nativeremedies.com/index.shtml
ad_ccl Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Sarah, Happy New Year - I am so glad you are starting on such a positive note. It has been a year since we started down this road - and things are great. I do think the yeast has been one of the final pieces of the puzzle for us - and I think it probably came from the antibiotic use without the probiotics. As Ronna has said at one point, we also seem to have traded the strep problem for a yeast problem in many ways. My son has been on prophylactic antibiotics for one year, prior to that on full dose antibiotics for 4 months. We have had 3 blood tests done - for strep titers - the first at the time of the PANDAS onset ( a year past August) - his numbers were around 800, in January last year we tested again - near the end of the month when he was pretty much tic free - his numbers were 1200, ( I had read that they can go up a few weeks after the infections then take a while to go down - so we thought maybe in August they were just on the rise, shot up and then by January were on the decline again - as they can go up to 2000 - then we tested again in August of this year, again when he was pretty much tic free so we assumed his titers would be in the normal range as they had a year to go back to normal ranges, and most of what I have read talks about several months, his numbers were around 750 - normal for the tests we were doing were 65 and under. My doctor has said that just because his numbers are high does not indicate a current strep infection, only that he had a strep infection - I have contacted NIMH to ask their advise - they sent me some links on strep titers, which essentially seemed to indicate that many kids have chronically elevated strep titers. I still would much prefer they be at a normal level. Just wondered what further tests your doctor is suggesting - and any info you have on the strep titers remaining elevated. In theory my son should not have any strep left over, from all the antibiotic use - and the fact he has been symptom free many times - and when he does have symptoms they are minimal and generally short lived - triggered by food for the most part - or viral illnesses.
wewillbeatthis Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Hello, all I am a newbie parent of a 12 yr old with TS (and suddenly emerging OCD and ADD, which seemed to get much, much worse about a month ago) and am looking for some guidance re PANDAS. Last week (after reading this site and Sheila's new book), we decided to have our son tested for strep, even though he did not have the classic symptoms like a sore throat. Sure enough, he had strep in his systems and our pediatrician has put him on amoxicillen a few days. Are there other antobiotics we should be inquiring about? I have seen some posts refer to other types of antibiotics. Thx for any help!
Chemar Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Ronna is our resident PANDAS "expert" so you may want to send her a PM or email re the most effective antibiotics I know that some folks have had to try several before they found the one that did the job. Also, with PANDAS, one needs prophylactic use of the antbiotic in order to eradicate the strep. I came across something recently that suggested that the natural antimicrobial, MONOLAURIN (lauric acid) may also be effective in eliminating strep. It is well known for its general antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral effect and the research is showing very encouraging results with things like herpes, cytomegalovirus, epstein-barr and even HIV It is available from the Vitamin Shoppe ( http://www.vitaminshoppe.com )
Ronnas Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 My son responded best to Keflex in the beginning and he has done well with clindamycin. He had no response to penicillin VK. Ronna
ad_ccl Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 wewillbeatthis --We have used amoxycillin and Biaxin - we have been on prophylactic amoxycillin for the last year. At the time of our sudden onset my son had no classic symptoms of strep either - although his throat did look red when the doctor looked at he had not complained about a sore throat other than in passing a week earlier - I know how sore my throat gets when I have strep. Sarah - incase you missed my earlier post - I am still curious about the tests your son is doing and what your doctor says about the high strep titers.
