Hi all, We are new and wish everyone the best of luck in dealing with Tourettes. Our 13yr old son just started ticking about 6 months ago after a round of nystatin. He had very minor tics before, so minor that we really did not realize that he had TS. He could not complete the nystatin due to really violent tics. After it left his system, the tics got much better, but still bad. He has been unable to attend school, he was an A/B student. We have tried twice more on much lower doses of nystatin (due to yeast that was causing IBS), with similar results. We have been through a battery of tests, finally made our way to a couple of traditionally trained docs that have gone the natural route. Found out that he is sensitive to dairy, soy, gluten, and many other foods and food groups, too numerous to mention. We continue to test and formulate the ongoing treatment plan with supplements and withholding appropriate foods.

We realize that there will be some reaction to Nystatin due to yeast die off, however, it is violent and very painful physically and emotionally for our son and us. The latest is today. We have decided that it is not worth the pain that it puts him through.

QUESTION: Has anyone experienced this violent reaction to nystatin and if so, what is the alternative?

Thanks very much for you input.

Hi Steve

sorry to hear of the Nystatin reaction. I am personally more in favor of natural anti-fungal treatments than the meds like nystatin (Candida Clear by NOW is my favorite, along with kefir as a probiotic)

Your son may have had a reaction to the nystatin ingredients but more likely it is "die off" or herxing (herxheimer reaction) when there is too rapid a die off of the candida, resulting in a toxic overload. This causes a major trigger for neurological and other symptoms. Another reason I personally prefer slower but less drastic natural anti candida supplements and diet.

you could try epsom salts baths each night (2 cups in a tunb of warm water, 20 min soak) as well as a magnesium supplement (we like Natural Calm ionic magnesium)

Fresh lemon juice in warm water as a detox drink is also helpful to sooth things during die off

Cheri, thanks so much for your reply! We assume that it is die-off, however, it is too violent and painful put him through or to even watch. We are definitely trying other avenues. Thanks for the help.

Chemar- can Candida Clear be used in a 10yr old (70lbs)? Does it cause "die off" or nausea? Thanks.

Hi

I believe so. The bottle does not specify anything about age, so you may want to check with the company (NOW Foods) or your child's doctor

My son started it when 12, tho he weighed more than 70 lb.
