Telya Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 We just started a steroid burst on Friday. Friday night and sat night my ds 12 wet the bed both nights. He hasn't done this since last year after a pandas episode. He's been more verbal and a little more cooperative other than that not much else after 72 hours. Any one have a time line on this burst or is it different for everyone.

Wondering if perhaps the steroid caused a strep flare?
Telya Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 Could be. He did have blood work 3 weeks before the burst started and all was good and didn't have any of his usual pandas episode like symptoms. I assumed that the steroids would bring out some of these symptoms. We are trying to confirm ds12 pandas b4 we attempt ivig. Is this right, should I get him tested for strep?

Kinda confusing right now, here. We did a steroid burst recently for things that were not the usual PANDAS symptoms (bad, bad chorea). We didn't think to check for strep 1st because my daughter was on a pretty good dose of zith (and added keflex w/ the steroids). This is the 1st time we have not had a good response to steroids...5 days after the steroids we got a positive strep test. So, my new rule is no steroids w/o negative culture. The strep has not cleared with a course of clindamycin and we had IVIG during the clinda treatment. Sigh. Why did you think the steroids would bring out symptoms? They should reduce inflammation and halt (or slow) antibody production. Shouldn't that help symptoms to resolve? I'm kinda thinking out loud about what the possibilities are.
Stephanie2 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 My boys wet the bed when they get yeast, which they get from antibiotics and/or steroids. Others have also confirmed bedwetting with yeast. For some reason we do not get bed wetting with strep.
Fixit Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 timeline can vary..usually outter most limits is 4 weeks you can have bed wetting as a symptom... we have seen more urination with steroid.. it is supposed to reduce inflammation..and inflammation is from fluid, so you are essentially taking it away..or trying to eliminate it from the body
Guest TwinCitiesMom Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 The steroids could definitely increase urinating frequency and urgency. Pandas also may increase urinary frequency and symptoms. My guess is that both are contributing to the bedwetting. Our son had extreme urinary frequency and urgency during pandas exacerbations. He was 13 at the time and it was very apparent on a car ride or airplane ride. He even had a few "accidents." This seems to have subsided quite a bit from Summer 2010, as we have not had any accidents since that time.
