Edited for no personal info:

I decided to try the alternative approaches and then he took a turn for the worse tonight. His prescription is for a liquid Zithromax--for the sinus infection. But now his throat is sorea so I am of course worried about possible strep (since his throat hurts so much he can barely swallow). Can Zithromax help strep too, or must it be an penicyllin (sp) type drug. Does anyone know this?

I realize that sinus infections can cause sore throats unrelated to strep, so it probably isn't strep. But I am asking just in case. I know he has picked things up from the doctor's office before...

Thanks for the input--I still plan to do alternative approaches in parallel as appropriate (without double doing). I haven't started the Zithromax and decided to talk to our DAN doctor first.

Thank goodness I went to the doctor today. At least I know what it is, thus the stress of the unknown doesn't add to this.

Claire,

Yes, Zythromax is o.k. for strept. It is a very broad spectrum antiobiotic effective for a large variety of bacteria. Just a couple of weeks ago a friend of mine's son tested postive for strept and Zythromax was prescribed.

just to let you know I have you and your presious son in my prayers.

ask your doctor if it is ok to put him on Olive Leaf Extract (with PLENTY of water)

we use it as a natural antibiotic and it is amazingly effective. I am not suggesting that you not do the antibiotics prescribed.......strep and infections need rapid action!!.......just suggesting the olive leaf as a follow up maybe ?

I am sure you are remembering to use the probiotics too

God Bless Claire......I know how worried you must be and I pray that the fever subsides quickly and the pain goes.

Claire,

I hope your son gets well soon. Zithromax is a good broad spectrum antibiotic to be on and is effective for strep. I read at one time (can't find it at the moment) that the NIMH was going to do or was doing a study looking at zithromax prophylactically for strep as pen vk was showing to be ineffective in preventing strep. I am not sure where the study is at this moment.

Thanks Chemar and Ronnas,

By the way, I called our DAN doctor to ask about alternate methods for a sinus infection and he said to go with the zithromax. He also said that nystatin/antifungals actually call some inflammation with the die-off so he would not recommend it (to prevent worsening of yeast from the antibiotic) until the congestion was much improved. I know I have heard that you need to bring the congestion down for the body to heal the sinuses better.

I am using the xylitol nasal spray. I just got the zithromax, but he is sleeping and I won't wake him. He has been in awful pain still today, even with a decongestant (maybe I didn't give him enough).

How is your son's fever now? Please keep us posted.

Is there any problem with latitudes database? Takes a long time to start and sometimes gives some error message...

Hi Claire,

Zithromax is good for sinus infection and strep throat. My son took it for his sinus infection before, and I had it for my strep throat two years ago. I will never forget how painful it's. I'm also at the side of againsting antibiotics. My son had UIT in December, and our ND treated him using remedies. However, sometimes antibiotics may be necessary such as in your son's case. It's just my personal view though. I will suggest taking HMF Repelet and HMF Forte after he finishes his antibiotics.

Best whishes, and please keep us updated...

zithromax is an antibiotic approved for the treatment of chlamydia and bacterial infections of the skin and respiratory tract. It shoudnt be addictive and should be taken in moderation too. Good luck for those who are into ZITHROMAX!!

My son's pediatrician feels that Zithromax is a very good medicine to combat PANDAS. She prescribes it to many of her patients when their symptoms appear, and has had very positive results - especially with ticcing.

Unfortunately, although my son was on it for about 4-6 months last summer (which is when we first discoverd that he has PANDAS) it didn't really help much for him. I still have not narrowed down which antibiotic works fro him when his symptoms appear. It's really trial and error. Sometimes Keflex, sometimes Augmentin...

In any case, I have been trying to cut out all medication and he has not been on anything since December, except for one brief period in February.
