probiotic, is good but might have a hard time
Giselle replied to quan_daniel's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi Daniel, thanks for posting that, it really makes sense. We have just started a product that might be of interest to this thread. It is called Lauricidin and is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. We have taken my son off Nystatin (and usually within a week a kind of mental fogginess creeps in - the yeast doing its beastly stuff) but that hasn't happened so far and its been almost a month so I believe the product is working. It is made from coconut and is a form of monolaurin - found in mother's milk, saw palmetto, etc. I have been so pleased with the results that I have started to take it for my cold sores that I get quite frequently (gee I wonder why? Could it be all the stress? ) with super results too! We chose this route because it was taking care of so much more than the nystatin alone and regular nystatin (liquid) has yellow and red dye in it - not to mention sugars of some sort! We had to get the Nystatin especially compounded which wasn't so bad but the refrigeration was tough on outings. Anyway, just wanted to share this! Giselle -
Gina, first Hi! - I'm pretty new here. I think you are being a great Mom letting him try things out. I know I'd be as stressed as you, but I'd say that since you are going with his request you should let him decide. My guess is that when the tics come back (or should I say if, wouldn't that be nice if the tics didn't come back!!!) that he will start back up on his own and probably be more invested in taking the vits after that - it will empower him. Sorry don't have a clue as to how long it takes to get out of his system - would assume each person is different and also based on how much stress they encounter (good and bad). Good luck to both of you, Giselle

Hi All, I'm usually over on the Tourettes forum as my son has TS but also has some issues with OCD (that's actually what we saw way before the tics started) but wanted to chime in on the counting part - my mother-in-law does that all the time and I also suspect she's high functioning aspergers as well (my diagnosis now that I understand so much more). Anyway no one has ever helped her with this - or knew how to- until my son got TS. It seems in telling her about all the stuff we are doing for him she gasped and said that she has had chronic yeast infections her entire life! And horrible gastric problems. She is now addressing the yeast and all the little OCD things are lessening too! I just love when sharing information it helps other people - glad we have these forums to do just that! Giselle

Kim, as to the younger child - I got "Hand and Mouth Disease" (almost said "Hoof and Mouth Disease" but I think only cattle get that - but you know with all the snacks I've been eating lately I'm feeling a little cowish ) when I turned 40 - and was told only infants get it - my immune system was super compromised at the time so no wonder. Our guys are fighting stuff in their systems all the time so wouldn't be surprised if it is what a younger child is supposed to get. Glad he's feeling a little better. B5 works wonders for the teeth issue - I read that here, tried it and he stopped grinding and clicking them together almost instantly! My son's DAN Doc and Environmental Doc agree that he should take 2 a day. Hoping for continued progress! Giselle

Kim, just wanted to give hugs, no experience with roseola, but streph gives my husband huge itchy rashes. Will he take a smoothy? You could get some vitamins in him that way. Jamba Juice is huge here - do you have them there? The last time my son was sick I got a non-dairy smoothy and mixed in all his ground up vits. He only drank half but that was better than nothing. Or better yet make your own from frozen berries and then there won't be any yucky additives. Good luck and sending my prayers. One last long shot. Has he been bitten by any mosquitoes? West Nile is in all the news here in Ventura county - how about there? Sounds silly reading that back but fevers bring out the worst in my imagination! Giselle

The Treatments that have Helped My Son
Giselle replied to Chemar's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Again, thanks so much Chemar for all your help - we pretty much do everything you've suggested but not the tuarine, we are seeing my son's DAN doc on the 21st and am going to suggest it. You had mentioned an integrative doc -and in your description I believe that is more of what our DAN doc is, but he also works with the DAN protocol. All my hugs to everyone here, you are all such a helpful, loving bunch! Giselle -
Hi everyone! I was wondering what you guys do to combat the diarrhea that usually accompanies the extra magnesium and vitamin C? It seems like whenever we get the mag and vit C at the perfect levels to help his tics he gets diarrhea! Mind you I call him my little fruit bat because he adores fruit and eats lot of it (as well as lots of veggies) so normally he never has a problem "going" anyway so when you add the mag and vit C things get really moving! I realize just backing off the amounts will help but it seems like at these levels his tics almost completely stop. We feed him rice at every opportunity which helps. Any other suggestions? Oh, just so you know he's taking Allergy Research Group's Buffered Vitamin C Powder with calcium, magnesium and potassium as ascorbate chelates in solution. The serving size is 1 teaspoon and he gets 1 and 1/2 per day (as recommended by his environmental doc) Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid) 2135 mg - 3558% Daily Value, Calcium (as Calcium Carbonate) 405mg - 41%, Magnesium (as magnesium carbonate) 215 mg - 54%, Potassium (as potassium carbonate) 90mg - 3%. We just started this stuff on Tuesday so he hasn't had the trots long but I don't want him depleted! This also happened when he took Bonnie's vits. I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July! Giselle

Hi Robin, I'm relatively new here to posting but have been reading for over a year. My son was doing amazingly well on Bonnie's Vits for about 7 months - I mean amazingly well - no tics at all unless he ate something really offending like red, blue or yellow dye in someone's b-day cake! Then this April he got really sick with the flu and then when the fever broke from that two days later he got a second fever. I knew it was a secondary infection so took him in right away - it ended up being Strep. Antibiotics took "care" of that and we hit him hard with probiotics to try to keep the yeast down but it seems he has never got back to his earlier level of TS. Bonnie's vits no longer worked - in fact they made him a lot worse. With intuition and some help from here and Brain Talk I figured out that it was more the fish oils but the TS Control also seemed to offend. With the TS upping the ante, so did I - I found a DAN doctor, had a huge battery of tests done (most were super fun for him - I mean peeing in a cup for a 7 1/2 year old gets huge giggles!- we made it fun) found lots of allergies, a yeast problem, a nasty bacteria gut bug, B6, Calcium, Magnesium, C deficiencies, wacked Copper to Zinc ratio. . . and high histamines! So now I'm making sure there is no folate in any nutritionals he takes. We also have an Environmental Doctor who keeps reminding me that because of the hyper-sensitivity they can also build up intolerances quickly - what works one day will offend the next and she suggests lots of rotation - even vitamins (oh and if your son has an allergy to corn watch out for the different components of vitamins because they sometimes use maltodextrin (corn) or cellulose (could be from corn) in vegetarian capsules). I am so glad we got our DAN doctor as he has saved me lots of time with the guessing game of what's going on in his body and finding most of his allergies quickly. We now have a plan of attack that seems to be working - still lurking in my intuition though is that Strep - the DAN doctor explained that people can be carriers and have it all the time- I believe that even though the sickness is "gone" that it isn't and it just takes ages for them to get back to normal and only with lots of rest, immune support and vitamins. Good luck and I hope you get a great DAN doctor soon! Giselle

Hi Nick! It's so great that you are making the leap to understanding the puzzle of Tourettes. I totally agree with Chemar in finding a doc that can help with this. We have a DAN doctor (Defeat Autism Now) who has really helped with taking tests to find out exactly where the imbalances are - saved us a lot of time that trial and error would have taken up. One thing about Flax seed oil - an alternative is Hemp oil which is what my son's doc recommends as he says its more easily absorbed - see everyone has an opinion! Good luck and good health! Hi Daniel, its actually the opposite for my son, but other than recess, P.E. and math he can't stand school and would much rather be home with me, the dogs, Dad and his Star Wars toys! I can't wait for summer because I know his tics will lessen. I know my son is B6 deficient and that's a huge one for stress - when stressed he can't access his B's and hence the tics. By the way, thanks again for the histamine advice. Saw his DAN doctor today and really went down that path with him and we changed our course a little as a result - Thank you! Giselle

Yes, thanks for posting this! Giselle

Oh my gosh! You are brilliant! Thank you so much! That makes so much sense - I know that my sons histamine levels go off the charts when he's stressed out as last year we had him muscle tested and he was registering allergy to everything - super high histamines and about a month later (summer vacation) he was much more relaxed and we got a true read on his allergies which were considerably less (had a delayed allergy test since then to narrow stuff down). When he's really bad we sometimes give him a Zyrtec which helps and we knew it helped him be less reactive to his allergies but didn't think the whole thing through but of course it was lowering his histamines! This whole thing is a puzzle and that was helpful with another piece of it - luckily I love puzzles or I think I would have gone off the deep end by now thanks, Giselle

Hi! Yes he likes fish and used to eat lots of wild caught canned salmon. His food allergy test shows that he's not allergic to any fish or shellfish - he loves shrimp. It's just the fish oil - it makes his tics much worse. I'm seeing his DAN doctor on Wednesday and will discuss all this with him. I think I'll try other forms of 3's and 6's. Giselle

Hi there, yes my son also can't tolerate the fish oils - well actually he did at first. We had used Bonnie's vits but it was like his body started rejecting them after a few months. We tried to reintroduce - again his tics got worse. I was listening to the couple that wrote the Gold Coast Cure (a diet that helps with a lot of inflammation diseases) and they only recommended Nordic Naturals because of their purity - no mercury, etc. They also explained if the Fish Oils cause repeating (burping or gas) and or a fishy taste the oil has gone rancid (lovely!) Did eliminating certain foods reduce tics?
Giselle replied to Claire's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
1. Gluten, corn, soy, citrus, bananas. 2. YES! Thankfully! 3. No changes in behavior, well perhaps a little less anxious. 4. 3 days after I found the last hidden ingredients and eliminated those. Glucano Delta Lactone is corn! go figure, and arrowroot is from the banana family! And the corn in his vegetarian vitamin capsules. Now they are gone he's almost completely ticless - except at school and I suspect the moldy smell of the airconditioner and extra stress. 5. He's still very sensitive, we only have been doing this for a few weeks. Giselle, son Hoyt, age 71/2.
