He is 10. I thought about sinuses, but he only complains when he chews, and he complains about both sides. I just had him at the ped the other day, and everything was okay but some fluid in his ear...which of course he won't use the nasal spray for. All I know he he won't eat because of it and the rages are getting continuous, and bad. By noon, I had already cleaned up broken glass, and re-hid the knives. Would a yeast issue maybe cause that? He doesn't appear to have thrush I gave him a Benedryl and he was calm. It is gonna be a long day!! Already planned for my husband to pick my daughter up from school and vacate the premises for the evening. Fun, Fun!!

My ds has been complaining of his teeth hurting for the past couple of days. States his molars hurt on both sides when he chews, and won't eat. I just had him at the dentist so I know the teeth are fine. Any ideas?

How many PANDAS kids are gifted?
forjpj replied to SarahJane's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Not speaking for her or anything, but I believe that is how Dr. L feels about the situation also. It is the intelligent kids with the intelligent moms figuring this stuff out for themselves. -
How Long Until Positive Signs Following Plasmapheresis?
forjpj replied to Tenacity's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
It was about 3 weeks for my son. Good Luck!!! -
Don't know for sure...but I think A can sometimes "hide" itself and look like B. And there has been talk on the forum before about the "good" strep in yogurt, and how it probably isn't a good idea for pandas kids. So at this point, I wouldn't exclude any strep!! Wish I could help you more with actual facts and science!!

forjpj replied to eljomom's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Sorry, I've been away from the computer for a few days. PM me your email and I will add you to the Virginia support group list. We should have been meeting today, but the whole month got away from me...darn pandas . I am hoping to schedule a meeting in the next few weeks...get one in after Halloween and before Thanksgiving, Christmas!! -
Boy is that the million dollar question or what? And...have you taken over my life? Real quick...cause I'm short on time, but I'll check back later because I'm sure there is much more expert advice coming your way. What works for me the best, and by no means is great, is I try to control it by not trying to control it. If I see he has crossed that line in his mind, I just try to keep everyone safe. I do my best to leave him alone, and ignore him. My son will run outside so that works as a cool down period...I just have to pray not much property damage happens before the cool down. Luckily he is too scared to run to far from the house at this point. Of course there is only so much you can take before you feel like screaming, but this is my goal. (And I really need to remember to watch that left hook!! ) I try to remind him afterward how wrong everything was, and have him say sorry. It really is a very fine line to walk, wanting them to know this isn't really them, and not there fault, but wanting them to accept responsibility at the same time. In the past, after the rage was gone and I could talk to him rationally, I have taken something away from him that he likes. If he wants it back he has to earn it by getting so many good deeds. Anything and everything can be a good deed. This helped me make the point it was wrong, but allowed him to regain some self-esteem at the same time. This way he has to do something to make up for what he did, but it is easy, and he can realize that he really does more good things than bad. But I haven't done too much of this lately, the thing he liked became contaminated at one point, and now, I'm just too darn tired!! As far as keeping everyone else safe, I feel like I follow him around waiting for the snap, especially if all the variables are right. For my daughter...if he has crossed that line, I send her to her room, and she knows to lock the door. I tried to explain it in the beginning that his brain like a dvd skipping during these moments, but I probably should go over the rage aspect again with her. She herself has been diagnosed with it now, so I'm hoping she will gain more compassion in the long run. And remember, it is really easy to say this but not so easy to do. It really is whatever that you find works for your family!! Hope it helps and you got some ideas!!

Rage/Resistance/Bizarre Behavior

Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you for explaining this is so well!! I will definitely remember this during those rages, and I will use this to explain others especially!! Sarah -
You have probably already looked at this but just in case you haven't...look at patientadvocate.org. Probably just more of the same, but not sure!! Sarah

I pm'd you a little info. Ditto on the tape thing. Lucky we had a very understanding nurse. Of course I was just dying to step in and rip it off all at once, but maybe I'm bad!!

Sorry, can't really help much, but I feel your pain!! We have exact same issues, and I gave up!! What I wouldn't give to see my son in a nice pair of khaki's with a nice polo shirt!! Thank goodness we had my son's teeth sealed before this all broke loose. Once in a while, I can get him to brush with baking soda and water, but not often. The sticky sensation is a big problem for him so he can tolerate the baking soda better. As for shower, when he does it, it has to be in "his own" bathroom, where no soap, or anything sticky has been for quite awhile. So he will basically, just stand under the water for a few minutes. I'll take what I can get. Oh, and I had to remove the shower curtain at one point...so I would stand there with towels everywhere to keep the water off the floor. Now, I have a new shower curtain up that is okay with him, but it cannot be in the tub, so it still has to drip all over the floor. How about a good pool? The raw hands is a tough one cause you know it hurts, and it just opens them up to other infections. I'm impressed you can get cream on at night! Does she realize you have put it on when she wakes up?

PANDAS tx causing antibx resistant super bugs?
forjpj replied to MakeMineTea's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I am particularly fond of Dr. Latimer's remark concerning over usage of antibiotics at the OCD conference this summer. She reminded us of all the teenagers all over the country being treated with antibiotics for acne. I just really thought that statement put things into perspective!! Sometimes I wonder if it was the overuse of antibiotics in the first place that hurt our kids, and made the bacteria so difficult to eradicate. And now they want to pull back, and watch our kids suffer!! So I like the idea that new antibiotics are being created all the time answer. This antibiotic train was started a long time ago, no jumping off now as far as I'm concerned! Keep making new ones!! That's what the drug companies get paid the big bucks for!! -
IEPs, spelling, lates, absences.....
forjpj replied to dcmom's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I was told, and we just finalized it today, that you want a 504 as opposed to an IEP. And this part I could be remembering wrong...the 504 is a federal program, and goes with the kid no matter where they go, whereas the IEP doesn't. On my ds's 504 today we put in accommodations for being on a modified schedule (so we can come in late), while receiving home-bound instruction as needed. Basically, right now he isn't doing so well, so the plan right now is to bring him in late everyday, but if he gets better he can come in anytime. -
Good Luck!! Keeping you in my prayers!!

Having trouble fitting in with other moms!
forjpj replied to Stephanie2's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Vent on!!! Totally get where you are coming from!! -
Just went back with dd for follow-up with Dr. L on Friday. She had an abnormal EEG that Dr. L ordered. It says generalized seizure disorder but she isn't convinced. She wants the actual waves to look at herself...so make sure you get that for her. I'm annoyed I almost asked them to give me that, but then I let it slip!! Her thought being an adult neurologist read it. That might not be so in your case, but just wanted to make sure you took her the actual waves. The thought of a seizure disorder on top of pandas was more than I wanted to handle!!

Wonderful news!! I'm so happy for you and your family!! Oh, and I guess I'll do the backwards thing tomorrow!! If it will bring luck, I'll do it!!

Another Example of Infection Causing Mental Issues
forjpj replied to MomWithOCDSon's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
My dad is end-stage Alzheimers, and therefore unable to communicate and put two meaningful words together. But my mom can always tell when he has a uti, by the "crazy talk" he will do. Why is it such a stretch for the pediatricians to think the same thing?
