  1. My ds started with a nose scrunch/grimace tic this week, along with some congestion. Since we're having very high tree pollen counts, I decided to bite the bullet and try an antihistamine. The doctor recommended Allegra, and so far the nose scrunch is fading away. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
  2. I believe rashes are only urgent if they are petechiae (which isn't actually a rash at all, but pinprick sized red blood spots under the skin). However, this rash could be anything from a virus to a developing medication allergy. Definitely worth a peek by the ped.
  3. We've got 3 motor tics only, no vocal, and they're all facial. He seems to have added a nose scrunch grimace today, but he also has a stuffy nose and cough, so I'm still on the fence about that one. It's interesting to me that they're all facial, but I think I'm grateful for that.
  4. My son presented with a sudden onset of multiple motor tics immediately after having strep twice in one month. With an aware and responsive pediatrician, we had ASO and ADB results about two weeks later and started on Augmentin. After some initial worsening(herxing?), we saw a dramatic improvement, and the tics went from nearly constant to only when he's really tired or when playing his sport. There is a little voice in the back of my mind wondering if it's really PANDAS or something else, although the high ASO and ADB and dramatic improvement with antibiotics lead me to think we're on the right track. I've been reading up on tics and tic disorders, and I wondered if tics present differently in PANDAS than they do in other situations.
  5. We are a recent onset as well. Ds started antibiotics 2 weeks after symptoms started. In the interest of getting started ASAP, we went with our pediatrician's offer. 10 days of augmentin followed by 1-2 months of amoxicillin. I was hopeful, but skeptical. After some initial herxing, he is about 90-95% back to normal, and we're 4 days into the amoxicillin. I'm hopeful that it can actually be this simple when it is caught this early.
  6. We live within simple driving distance of Dr. L and are considering scheduling an appointment. My son's case is relatively mild and straightforward, but my hope is to keep it that way. About how much does she charge for an initial appointment? (Ballpark estimate is fine) Does insurance cover bloodwork if it is done at a covered facility? We don't need dramatic intervention, but we do need someone willing to prescribe, monitor, and change antibiotics as necessary, and to have someone on our side in case things get worse.
  7. Thank you for posting this! My ds wouldn't qualify because he currently does not meet the OCD criteria, but hopefully other new families can join.
  8. Could it be nystagmus? http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003037.htm
  9. Our pediatrician has prescribed 10 days of augmentin followed by 1-2 months of amoxicillin. I realize amoxicillin may not be enough, and if we are seeing improvement on Augmentin, I will definitely try to petition for a longer course. I would assume an appointment with Dr. Latimer is a several month wait and quite an expense. I am hoping that the pediatrician will be willing to keep us on track until then.
  10. Thank you for the ideas. Herxing does sound like a possibility. I understand that more aggressive treatments are preferable, but I consider my son very lucky that we were able to get antibiotics this quickly at all. We are hoping to ride this out with the pediatrician as long as it remains this simple, but we are considering an appointment with Dr. Latimer (who happens to be local) in the event that we need to take it further.
  11. We are brand new to this. My son started 2 motor tics a couple weeks ago immediately after a month of strep (first antibiotic did not clear it, second did). He now has a negative culture, but elevated ASO and ADB titers. After only 24 hours on Augmentin, the tics seemed much less frequent, but after 48 hours they had increased dramatically in frequency. Is there still hope that the Augmentin will work? Do I just need to stick it out longer? I know I'm being impatient, but I am having a really hard time accepting that this may be our new reality.
  12. We received the results from the bloodwork today ASO 281 ADB 198 We started a 10 day course of augmentin this afternoon that will be followed by 30-60 days on once a day amoxicillin. What should we expect? Any recommendations for probiotics?
  13. We saw the doctor this morning. I was prepared to have to advocate a bit, but after I described the situation, she immediately suggested an overnight culture and bloodwork to check for antibodies. If either are positive, we will be doing 10 days of augmentin followed by 4 weeks of amoxicillian. So now we wait...
  14. I'm not sure yet. I just heard back from the doctors office, and will see the doc on Monday. The nurse was familiar with PANDAS and sounded concerned, so I hope that's a good start.
  15. My son was diagnosed with strep and after 10 days on antibiotics, two days later his strep symptoms started again. An overnight culture revealed he was still positive and they put him on another antibiotic for 10 more days. Two days after stopping this last antibiotic (this past Monday), he started opening his mouth like a fish often, and more recently started jutting his jaw out to the side. I know these two simple tics are not as dramatic as most of what I've read about PANDAS, but I the correlation to him having strep is pretty apparent. He did have a nose scrunch tic about this time last year (and he had strep 4 times last winter, but by the time I figured out it was a tic and not a true itchy nose it had stopped). I have a call into the doc, and will get an appointment for early next week. Any advice? Is this fixable?
