My dd(9) has Severe school anxiety with refusal to attend. Last year she was out for 3 1/2 months (medical leave) and missed many other days due to her anxiety. Is there any good articles to give to teachers, exc? She begins 3rd grade Tuesday (hopefully).

Hi Philamom,

I've got a 3rd grade girl too, who has sadly had to battle lyme as well.

Here is a link to articles/brochures from Lyme Disease Association regarding lyme in schools. I think the ABC's of lyme is meant to educate teachers, etc.

Here is a link discussing a new (2010) book:

The National Association of School Psychologists joins the growing number of professionals who recognize the devastating and far reaching impact of Lyme Disease in the nation's children. In the 2010 publication Pediatric Disorders; Current Topics for Interventions and Educators, authors Paul McCabe and Steven Shaw have devoted an entire chapter to this critical topic. Chapter 10, entitled Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Infection; Causes and Physical and Neuropsychological Effects in Children by Ron Hamlen and Deborah Kliman, indicates the important and often missed link between behavioral/cognitive changes and Tick-Born Infection.

And here is a link specific to PA, but has good links for everyone with kids:

Lyme in PA 101: Knowledge is power. Where can teachers and parents learn about Lyme Disease?

http://www.examiner.com/early-childhood-education-in-scranton/lyme-pa-101-knowledge-is-power-where-can-teachers-and-parents-learn-about-lyme-disease

Hope that helps!

This is great! Have you looked into the children's book "Let's Get Well" that is listed? I wish there was a sneak peek into like Amazon does! The books says for ages 8-12.

I wanted to bump this up for the www.examiner website posted above "Where can teachers and parents learn about lyme disease?" It's got a bunch of great links on children & lyme. Highly recommend reading the links, esp. the ones by Ann Corson.

I can commesurate with you. My ds13 did on-line schooling last year because he was so ill. He is starting to improve but is very anxious about starting 8th grade because he said he still feels ill and is not ready. He is maybe 1/2 way thru treatment and so not sure what to do. Part of it is anxiety and part is that he is still not feeling 100% and wants to be like the other kids when he is around them. He is already signed up on-line for next year as we had to for him to continue his school during the summer. The thought of me being his 'coach' for another year just is hard to imagine as it was one of the more challenging things I have had to do in my life. This is one of the reasons I am interested in the neurofeedback treatment, hoping that it will help with this symptom. Will be interesting to hear what others have to say as well.

Another issue with him, after attending an adolescent seminar, is the harmones and their participation in all of this. This throws a whole lot more into the equation and makes it difficult to figure out what is a symptom of the illnesses and what is a symptom of adolescent development. Your lucky that is not something to figure out at this time. :)

Sorry...I should have mentioned the original post is almost a year old. I was just looking over some of Ann Corson's links and thought I would bump this up. I'm glad to hear your son is improving! He is lucky to have you as a "coach" for another year while he continues with his recovery! Good luck Mama!!

btw- my dd is actually somewhat excited about attending school this year. We still have a few weeks - so hopefully I didn't just jinx myself.
