Guest Amanda
Hello, I would like to tell you our story and get your input. My son is 7. He has tics. Only during school year for the most part. He also has these big sores around his mouth that the dermatoligist cannot identify the cause. When we get one healed up, two will pop up somewhere else on his face. He also has what seems to be reflux, he spits up alot at home and school. We took him to a neuro for his tics, the put him on catapres patch-it did nothing, they put him on celexa, that helped but our insurance wouldnt cover it. Then they put him on paxil and oh my God what a nightmare this past week has been! He became violent, extremely mischievious, he is crying all the time and said that God wants him dead. Imagine my horror hearing that come from his sweet mouth!! The doc says he will be fine, it may take another week for the paxil to leave his system. I am desperate for help! I really dont care about the tics at this point-I just want him to be happy! Do you think its possilble that he has a milk allergy causing all his problems? He also wets the bed almost every night and always has. What do I do-just stop giving him milk? Is there a certain vitamen I need to buy before we start? Sorry this is so long! Evangelia
Hi Amanda, Welcome to this board. Sounds like you are having a very difficult time, I am very sorry to hear of what your son is experiencing at this time. You have come to the right place to get alot of answers and help. First, I would strongly recommend that you stop the drugs, as it looks like your son is having major side effects and you can definitely see that there is an underlying issue (allergies/sensitivites) that has to be dealt with - the drugs don't do that. Chemar can definitely add to this based on her experience with drugs. You might have to wane him off the drugs slowly. Most neurologists/doctors frown upon people who try to deal with the tics naturally. Regarding the sores, my mother-in-law gets huge sores whenever she eats something that her body is allergic or sensitive to. Milk also does cause this to her. I would definitely eliminate the milk, and subsitute it with soy milk or rice milk. Please refer to Claire's summary of recommendations that she has compiled. It is a great starting point of what to do. It also guides you as to where to find suitable doctors that believe in healing our children properly. Here is the link: http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...p?showtopic=689 Please read through it, these recommendations really helped me. I eliminated wheat/milk/eggs/corn right away since these are the most common ones. I also followed many of the other recommendations and I saw improvements. I would also like to point you to Jeff, he recently wrote: "The other has gone from a problem bed-wetter, even gone to "therapy" for it... to only one accident in the last month. In both cases, it was due to eliminating the colors and flavors from their diet." http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...topic=923&st=15 Hang in there, you can take steps right away - and you should see a difference in a matter of days. Please write back to let us know how you both are doing. Take care, Evangelia
Guest Amanda
WHOA! I have alot to learn. Great information and links in your post, I really appreciate it. It all seems so overwhelming, especially the vitamens and supplements! I will study up and learn it though. I am determined to help this child myself. I have lost all faith in the doctors that he has been seeing. The only warning she gave us about the paxil was that it might make him sleepy! Then when took him back she acted as if it was such a commen reaction. I was so mad. I would have never given my son that junk had I known the possible side effects. I have learned my lesson and will research everything from now on. I feel like a bad mother for making him go through this. They stopped the paxil cold turkey. They said that with a reaction this bad it was best just to stop instead of weaning him off it. Thanks so much for your quick response-now I have a direction I want to go in. Thank you very much! Evangelia
Hi Amanda, I am glad with your decision. Please don't feel like a bad mother, we try to make the best decisions with the information that we have and we trust the doctor's that we see.... unfortunately, I don't trust the conventional doctors anymore. The parents on this newsgroup have been my guiding light through all of this. We are all here for eachother. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like - we are all talking from experience and we are all learning more with eachother's input. There definitely is a wealth of information. Take it one step at a time, and try to not get overwhelmed with all of this. Start with the easiest things, like removing the artifical additives and salicylates (apples, tomatoes, grapes etc.), and if you can, the television. You will be surprised at what the effects are for just doing that. www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info is a good reference for the salicylates and additives. Take care and happy reading! Mustang Carole
HI Amanda, Your child's symptoms of tics, sores , reflux and spiting up should be addressed by your pediatrician and open up other doors that your insurance should cover. You should have an imminology work updone, get a referral for a pediatric gastrointestinal specailist, get allergies tested,. and incorporate a DAN dr if you can afford it. You can orchastrate a sympthany of drs , just keep every lab results and drs document in your own files, keep a daily log of your appts, your child's vits and his reactions. Read all the good advise here about the diets of clean foods, and any special ones if needed like gluten free and casein free. The food additives are a BIGGIE for our kids that can cause the tics,,,,,,this is extra work for the immune system . Hang in there! Hope this helps.......been there and still doing all the above, Mustang Carole
Guest Amanda
Oh my gosh its working!! I think he is allergic to milk. Not one sore on his face,no more bed wetting, and no more throwing up! The tics have decreased so much that he only does it a few times a day instead of all day long. I am so happy and so is he. Evangelia
That's great! I am very happy for you both! Evangelia
Claire
Amanda, Terrific news! Please clarify: the ONLY change that you made was to eliminate milk, or did you eliminate other foods, artificial ingredients or start supplements? It is good to be specific so that newcomers can understand the impact of food. Evangelia, Awesome advice--and you sure nailed it with the milk comment! That's what I call paying it forward, eh? Guest Amanda
I have not started supplements yet, I will do that this week. Yes, the milk was the only thing we cut out so far. I made him french toast this morning and added milk to the egg mix and when I picked him up from school he had a little sore on his face. Connected or not I dont know. I will keep a close eye on him to see. I also want to take this oppurtunity to let anyone reading this please beware of paxil use in young children. As I posted in my first post he was one of those kids that had a horrible reaction to it. Well he also has had withdrawel symptoms. Bad headache, the shakes, feeling horrilble for about an hour and then it passes. I believe he is over that now but I just want to warn parents to get all the facts and watch your child closely if you decide to go that route. I just thank god he didnt harm himself or anyone else! I will keep in touch-you guys are great!
Evangelia
Amanda, If you can afford it, I would still go with allergy tests (IgE and IgG) to help determine other possible allergies. You might be surprised to see that eggs might be a big one too. Claire, Thank you :-) I learned from the best! I am forever grateful for the help that you and many other parents on this newsgroup gave me in a time of great need! Helping others is soo gratifying and the least I could do. Isn't there a way that you can LOCK your post for newcomers so that it always stays on top of all the subjects. Similar to Sheila Rogers' post. It is such a great summary and starting point. Chemar
Hi Amanda I have been in the process of moving house and so have missed a lot on the board, but I was just sooooooo delighted to read of your improvement with the milk elimination. It is so simple yet has such a profound effect when we find and eliminate "triggers" to tics or other problems. Now, as to paxil. There is now (at last) an FDA mandatory warning on all SSRI type drugs like paxil that warns of their dangers in young people. Any doctor still prescribing these DANGEROUS drugs to children really is someone I wouldnt want to go near. I am so glad you got him off it asap. Please do keep us all posted on your progress. what a blessed start to the holidays for your family
