GraceUnderPressure Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 Has anyone here used a modified ketogenic type diet? (Similar to phase 1 Atkins) I have been seeing encouraging studies on epilepsy & autism with this & even found some that are being tried for OCD and Tourettes patients (separate studies). I'm considering trying it with my 18yo, though with his dairy & egg intolerance it will mean eating meat & veggies & supplementing MCT oil all day long to make it work which I suspect we won't be able to maintain for very long!
Chemar Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 hi just do be aware that there seems to be an association with increased depression and low carb diets, related to serotonin decrease care with carbs is beneficial (ie eating healthy carbs and avoiding the refined etc ones) but there appears to be a fine line that can tip the balance for people who have disorders that are already serotonin deficient!

Our neuro was considering trying it with dd7 (6 at the time) if we could not get control of her seizures. Luckily we found the right meds and then taking her off gluten was enough to stop them. If she did do it, it would have started out in the hospital under close watch and then after she would have been monitored very closely. But that was considering the ketogenic diet and she was onl 6. At age 18, I think with attention to the typical things a low carb diet suggests (vitamins, supplements, etc.) it could be worth a try. Susan
