Hi - for those parents whose children get stomach issues when in an exacerbation.... do you think the stomach problems are due to the infection that is causing the exacerbation or do any of you feel that the problems are part of the PANDAS symptoms?

Our dd6 is in a mild flare at the moment and having intermittent, lowish level stomach pains, mild nausea and a few more BMs a day (say 2-4 instead of 1).

It is, sometimes, waking her at night.. she goes poo and the pain and nausea subside. She doesn't want to go to school some days 'cos she's worried she'll have to poo there. I was told both by my MIL who was an elementary school teacher and by nursse at the drs that loads of kids won't poo at school so I'm not too worried about that bit....

I just wondered if a flare can cause enuresis could it also cause increased bowel motility and consequently some pain or nausea? How hard should I be looking for a cause of the stomach problems as it's been going for 3 weeks now and our usual ped, not our PANDAS ped, is not worried and says it's prob just viral?

thanks for any ideas?

i think my son only gets stomach aches/vomitting with an actual strep infection. I think it is a symptom of strep, not necessarily pandas (but not sure, just what I've observed in my 5yo)

Our DS had nearly identical tummy troubles, dut. And yes, I think they are PANDAS and may well be strep in the gut itself. We've never tested to see if he's got it hiding there, but I know the same symptoms (nausea, diarrhea, gas, bloating, pain) are associated with gut strep (though so are about 2 dozen other conditions! <_< ).

We have moved to fairly high-dose probiotics in conjunction with the abx (about 165-170 billion units per day), but even that didn't set aside all the issues. For about three months, we had DS eating heavily of the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast), but he was growing very tired of bananas, it still wasn't setting aside all the gut issues, and its not a diet that's reasonable to continue for an extended period of time, either.

So, we finally decided to try one of SFMom's favorite supplements: bentonite clay. We are very cautious about it because we do not have the same advantage SFMom has in having a doctor directing and monitoring its use. But the label says "1 tablespoon, once a day, on an empty stomach," so we have been giving DS one tablespoon, once EVERY OTHER day, on an empty stomach. And it has made a TREMENDOUS difference, I can't even begin to tell you! No more gas, no more pains, no more diarrhea, no constipation, no nausea, no complaining! His gut overall seems much happier.

Coincidentally, his overall health seems to have taken another "bump" toward the positive in recent weeks, too, and DS has commented that he began to feel better about the same time he began taking the clay. Interesting, no?

Thanks for the replies.. we're half way thru doing a Diagnos-techs poo sample for both kids, so may get some answers on strep in the gut. Ds also just came back positive for candida in the throat, so that too could be an issue for dd.

If we don't see a satisfactroy resolution soon, we may well try the bentonite clay, so thanks for that suggestion. Glad it seems to be working so well for your son, MomWith.. I'm off to google it now <_<

Don't let The Google scare you too much, like it did me! <_< All this talk of "blockage" and constipation! That's what held me back on trying it for a long time, and that's why we've been very cautious and "low dose" about it, too. I'm sure every person is different, and their individual gut issues are probably equally singular. But if our experience is any indication, it's definitely worth considering. Good luck!

Thank you for the info. on this! My son has quite a bit of pain after each meal and other stomache issues throughout the day, so will give this a try.

Take care. :D
